“Great food and ambiance”
Reviewed February 28, 2012

We have been here at least five times and have had delicious meals every time. They also have a nice selection of wines. We have found the ambiance to be very comfortable and enjoyable.
However, during our last visit the service was unexplainably slow. It took 45 minutes to get the salad course. However, we were never rushed and the evening was most enjoyable.

“Great food, charming restaurant”
Reviewed October 31, 2011

This was my second time dining at the Vine Cottage in La Mesa, but my first for lunch. It is a delightful venue, serving French bistro-style food.

The luncheon menu offered several delicious-sounding appetizers, interesting entrees, and some uncommon beverage selections.

As a starter we shared their "Caprese" cottage brushette, and my friend asked if artichoke hearts could be added to it. The waiter was most obliging and the appetizer was delicious.

For our entrees we each chose the grass-fed, Paso Prime California beef burger, which was served with "drunken goat cheese", Anaheim chilies and arugula, and came with Yukon steak fries. It was superb, and cooked exactly as we had ordered.

From their interesting beverage menu we chose the Belgium-style "Duvel" beer: "Little Devil" on draught, from Alesmith Brewery here in San Diego. A unique taste, but one we both loved and will definitely order again!

For dessert, we shared a delicious cobbler-like offering, prepared with several kinds of fresh berries, and topped with vanilla ice cream.

The quality of food and service was consistent with those of my first visit to this very welcome addition to the East County restaurant scene. Finally - a French bistro with wonderful food in an area which has been without one for much too long.

“Don't miss this place.....”
Reviewed September 10, 2011

One word.... Charming! I went to Vine for a glass of wine and ended up there for 3 hrs. We enjoyed their meat and cheese plate and the wide variety of wines (no I didn't try them all). The place is small but there is outdoor seating as well. The service is attentive and not push. Eventhough it was small I didn't feel rushed or pushed. The desserts and coffee were fantastic. Like I said before DON'T miss this place!

“Fantastic food, service, beer and prices, best in our neighborhood”
Reviewed September 5, 2011

We initially were drawn to the Vine Cottage because of their Sunday Happy Hour. All draft beer is $4.00 per pint and they have a strong selection (Stone, Alesmith, Bear Republic, etc.). We knew the beer would be good but were completely surprised at the quality and presentation of the food and the very reasonable prices. My favorite thing to order is the Mussels Mariniere and frites and my husband loves the Fra Diavola pizza.
On Tuesdays they have $2.00 tacos and we found the local cod ones to be our favorites.

The wine selection is very good as well.

I'd recommend indoor seating, outdoors is nice but it's on a busy street.

“Delicious Food, Wonderful Wines and Good Service”
Reviewed June 24, 2011

This is a relatively new restaurant so we visited the Vine Cottage for lunch. It is nicely decorated and has outside seating if you choose dine "al fresco". The wine list is large and the prices are very reasonable. There are also several beers on tap. We took the server's suggestions and ordered the Ceasar salad and the cheese pizza with carmelized onions. Because of bacteria, most restaurants won't make traditional Ceasar dressing because of raw egg. When we hesitated to order it our server told us they made it with roasted poblano chiles, parmesan, and garlic so we decided to give it a try. So very glad we did. The greens were crisp and the dressing was full bodied, bursting with flavor and thick with parmesan. The pizza was unique and different. It comes in a rectangle and the crust is thin and crispy with puffy air holes from the yeast. It has a touch of sweetness and complemented the toppings of provolone cheese, carmelized onions and prosciutto. Another winner. Our wine and beer were top notch and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Our server told us a new menu was coming out the next day with lots of additions to the existing one. We are looking forward to our next visit to try something new.
