“Home Away from Home”

While this is not an elegant five star property, it has some excellent features including large, well equipped rooms with full kitchen, living room area, good beds, flat screen TV, wifi, and good lighting. I liked being able to park near my room too. Every morning there is a large breakfast buffet that includes several hot dishes, cereals and yogurt, fruit, juice and coffee, waffles, and a variety of breads and muffins....and it is refilled as needed during the entire 3 hour time slot. Three nights a week there is also a social buffet which could be a barbecue night with burgers, hot dogs, and grilled chicken breasts, baked beans, potato salad, chips, and good salad options. Other nights there are meatballs and spaghetti, meatball subs, tacos, etc....none of them gourmet or balanced entree plates but all are popular comfort foods with the options of a big salad as well. There is a small but okay fitness center with 4 machines and you might have to wait at 7:30 AM but otherwise it is easily available. The downsides are that there are mobs of people for the buffets, including families with sometimes uncontrolled children during school holidays, dogs are welcome at the hotel and may bark, and there are no elevators for upstairs rooms. We found that some days we were happy to make do with healthful barbecued chicken breast on salad for dinner GRATIS and it was a nice addition, along with included wine and sodas. The room was perfectly clean, we did not see even one insect, and the property was well kept.

Room Tip: If you do not love climbing stairs, pick a first floor room since the outdoor stairs are steep and q...

We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights in March 2012. We got in late so the parking was tight by our room but the next morning it was a lot easier. After a long day of doing tourists events and driving from LA, the easy and free shuttle was a nice surprise to help us get dinner at 9pm. The extra room in the kitchen was great. Del Mar is about a 10 minute ride and it was amazing. Also, my husband golfed Torrey Pines and raved about it. We had lunch there after which was also very good.

This the second time we have stayed at this hotel for an extended period of time. This is a great place to stay. Very clean and comfortable, large rooms. Continental breakfast is amazing. Hot food every morning. Monday through Wednesday happy hour was awesome. The staff was so friendly and helpful! LaJolla is a beautiful area just outside of San Diego. Hotel was very conveniently located, closed to shopping, beach, restuarants and entertainment. We will definitely stay here again!!!

Room Tip: Some rooms have a fireplace and some have hot tubs right outside.

We stayed in the suites that had a bedroom on the main floor with a second bedroom in the loft for 8 nights. Most of our recent vacations have been in condos through VRBO. However, we decided on this hotel this trip as it seemed a decent deal. The breakfasts included are a plus and the 'snacks' from Mon to Wed were also a plus. While the snacks may not be suitable for all, they can be treated as a full meal if you are willing to not have the best balanced meal for dinner. Plus free beer and wine too! This can be a big money saver and we found our kids enjoyed the snack-type food for some of the dinners just as well anyway. Get to the breakfasts meals earlier to avoid long lineups. The stocking of the kitchen seemed like a bit of an afterthought but the staff were more than willing to try and come up with the extra untensils and such we needed - most of the times they had something for us to use. The pool can get cold somedays ... whcih was disappointing ... although its apparently heated. The Spas onsite were nice. The location while not close to everything was quite quick for us to hop in the car and get to where we were going - we missed most of the peak traffic times anyway. 15 mins to Seaworld, 15-20 mins to the zoo and about 25 mins to Legoland.

Room Tip: If you have kids who like to play in the water request a room near the pool. Be aware it can get a l...

The cleaning detergent used for the bed sheets and towels gave me and my husband rashes. $12/day parking seems ridiculous to me, but I haven't compared hotel parking rates in this area. The breakfast is what you'd expect for a free hotel chain breakfast. The wireless internet only seems to work occasionally in the breakfast room but I couldn't get a signal in our suite.

Pros: The location is within walking distance to the USCD campus (~1 mile).

I only stayed for weekend so I can't speak to the longer-term comfort of the suites.

We stayed in a suite with a bedroom & a second bed in a loft.
The good: Very clean, cheerful & helpful staff, great location for our activities, much better than average breakfast, and the evening "snack" is almost a meal.
The bad: Living room furniture was extremely uncomfortable, wifi almost always unavailable in our suite, allowing pets in the breakfast area, and $12/per day fee for parking (cheap, cheap, cheap).
The weird: When you changed channels on the TV in the living room, the one in the loft changed also.
Also bad, but not the hotel's fault: people who load up at both breakfast & dinner like they weren't going to eat again for a week, and walk away with the food. Very tacky, people.

My friend and I were very happy with our two night stay at the Residence Inn in the La Jolla area. Great staff, great location, very conveniently located off the highway and close to downtown La Jolla and UCSD campus. Rooms were comfortable, spacious and clean. The free breakfast was great, and the property itself was neat with its almost townhouse appearance.
The staff was great, very friendly. parking is $12 a night; however, there is limited street parking for free if you are lucky and don't mind the minor inconvenience. Shower was powerful with good temperature, TV was flat screen, small sitting area with standard furniture.

Room Tip: you can choose first or second floor - we did hear people walking around above us, didn't bother...
