“Service Rules at the Lodge”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 21, 2007

We have stayed at the Lodge twice in the past year. My wife and I happened upon it the weekend of the Buick Open and loved it so much we returned several months later with our family.
We live 2 hours away, yet felt like we were a continent away. The Lodge's ambiance is unrivaled. It feels like a Scottish golf resort in wintertime. The smell of the wood burning fireplace, the kilt wearing staff and the rich wood appointments throughout impart a comfortable and unique experience.
The staff is 5-star. They will remember your names and your preferences. Never have I wanted to tip an employee as frequently as we tipped this staff. The resort is small yet feels large. Normally, you might want the reverse; but this works. You get the personal attention of a small lodge but the service and amenities of a large resort.
Restaurant and bar are first class. Had great meals both times.
And, there is the added bonus of having the great food/shop meccas of La Jolla and Del Mar within minutes. If you book ahead, the hotel will take you to dinner in their house Mercedes Benz.
During summer, they will escort you to a private beach area that they have secured unique access to.
The only fault I had was that the hotel was not able to put two rooms together nor adjacent for my family. What made that troubling was that it was the hotel was not near capacity. Still, I forgive them for what otherwise was a great experience both times.
We will be back!

Room: We got a room facing the garden which was very nice. We did not miss the golf course view at all and actually like the quiet of the room. The rooms are well appointed and conformtable but nothing special for the rating of this hotel.
Food: We ate at AR Valentine which as one of the best meals I have ever had. If you like regional, locally grown food cooked to perfection this is a must. We also had breakfast in room service and it was also very good.
Activities: My husband played golf both on the north course and south course, if you don't have a large group, walking on at twilight is the way to go. The pool was also very nice. The spa was first rate although it was missing an out door spa space. The treatments were wonderful.
Tips:
1. Reserve the hotel car that takes you within 5 miles (La Jolla, Del Mar) early as it books up quickly.
2. Call the hotel to get the breakfast and free parking deal. American Express platnum card also offers a breakfast and $100 spa credit with late check out deal. You can combine both and get both the spa and the included breakfast.

We very much enjoyed our 4-day stay at The Lodge and would return if a special occasion presented itself. It is a fabulous hotel offering superb service and a location that offers great golf, nature walks and Ocean access.

We really liked the craftman-style rooms. The room was large, the bed was comfortable, the bathroom was very nice. The soap, shampoo, etc are as good as I've had. As our courtyard-facing room did not let in that much natural light, I would have liked a few more lights in the room, but its a pretty small issue.

The Lodge overlooks the Pacific Ocean. The beach is maybe a 15 minute walk and the hotel provides complimetary drop off and pick up service. We went to the beach and took advantage of the Lodge's complimentary covered beach chairs (which I believe are for free from June to September for one day if you are staying for 4 or more days). The hotel also provides complimentary towels, beach toys and a limited food menu at the beach.

Probably the best thing about this place is the service. Everyone from the valet parkers to the front desk to the people who cleaned the rooms were welcoming and seemed truly happy to be working there. We got some very good dining recommendations from the concierge and found the driver to be very helpful.

If there is a downside, its the price. The rooms are not cheap and there is not much scope for saving money by eating outside the hotel - there are not many cheap dining options close by. The hotel does offer complimentary car service into La Jolla, and I would recommend reserving that in advance as it was completely booked up for one of the nights we were there.

  • Liked — The hotel surroundings, the staff.
  • Disliked — Not enough natural light in the rooms.

I was going to book my stay over the internet, but I got a better deal by calling. I got free valet parking and breakfast included, for the same price as just the room.

The pool was fantastic. We loved the breakfasts. We had three breakfasts brought to our room, we ate one in the upscale restaurant, and enjoyed three in the grill adjacent to the golf course. Wherever we ate, a consistent quality was evident.

Non-golfers can certainly enjoy the facilities. The grounds of the hotel are beautiful. I am not a conservative, nor am I a Republican, but I totally relaxed at this luxurious hotel. The hotel stay was expensive, but it was worth every penny. The rooms are spotless, the architecture priceless, and the grounds unmatched.

All of the people who worked for the hotel were gracious, including the people who made up the rooms, twice a day. There was a surprise on our bed each evening, from a box of tea to blueberry chocolate candy. Most of the younger workers are students at local schools or recent graduates, and they were polite and helpful. The concierge arranged for the hotel's drivers to take us in their Mercedes to locations within 5 miles, which includes local beaches, UCSD, and the village of La Jolla. We also arranged for the driver to pick us up at these locations. Arrange this in advance. We were lucky because they had a cancellation, and although we had rented a van, it was nice not having to deal with parking a car everywhere we went.

If attention to detail and pampering are what you are looking for in a vacation, then this is the place for you. Yes, the men in quilts greeting us when we arrived were a humorous addition, something which was even funny when we went to Scotland two years ago, but you expect these extra, albeit unusual, touches when you stay at a luxury resort that is hosting the 2008 U.S. Open. The best recommendation that I can give is that if I return next year, I wouldn't consider staying anywhere else!

I loved it and plan to go back. The craftsman style detail is amazing. Very comfortable and relaxing in every detail. Wonderful (but expensive) restaurant.

One tip: Parking at the hotel is expensive ($21 per night) so park free at the public lot near the golf course just to the north of the hotel.

  • Liked — serene beuty
  • Disliked — exensive minibar and restaurant, no wifi in public areas, only one hot tub

Great beds and linens, very good service. Decidedly Republican atmosphere with a little too much golf. It is a very beautiful golf course so the golf people should be of no surprise. Unfortunately the place is a little stiff in keeping with it's business clientele.
When you pull in you'll be greeted by a guy wearing a kilt. Enjoy a laugh and try not to let it get you down. This is not Scotland afterall but the owners want you to think it is!
Want a ride to the beach? They'll take you there and the driver will be wearing the same outift the "help" wears around the pool - full business suits!
If you're bringing kids, make sure you have ear plugs for them if you're outside. The US Airforce has a base nearby and their flight pattern is directly over the resort straight out to the ocean. The decibel level is ear-damaging.
On the plus side: Enjoy some of the best produce in the state from Chino Farms. The Lodge restaurant features these wonderful fruits and vegetables. The proximity to some of the country's best beaches (and warmest ocean water) is a huge advantage.
Once the Lodge figures out it's identity and makes it a little more appealing for non-golfers, this will be a really nice place to stay.
Hopefully with Bush out of office in a few years, they'll have some sway with getting the military to slightly alter their flight plan. But for now, enjoy the bonus "protection" and pretend you're living in the film "Top Gun" as you enjoy a glass of wine pool-side.

Called the hotel and received a good deal --- free breakfast, free parking, taxes included. Overall, a good deal. Stayed July 1 - July 8 with my young daughters.

Had a room overlooking the courtyard. Asked for bright room and they gave us one on the 4th floor. Not dim at all. Service was excellent. In room late dinner was short one glass --- we ordered two entrees. The server ran back downstairs and brought us a third glass. Almost all who worked a the hotel were very nice and professional.

The room was very nice. Large (520 sq. ft.) and very clean. Two excellent cleanings per day. Had a nice balcony. Nice big bathroom. Big tub for baths.

Pool was excellent with saline instead of chlorine and underwater music.

Golf looked to be magnificent.

Parking spots a bit small and tight.

Visited downtown San Diego (near the Omni) and were very glad to be close to La Jolla instead. Moreover, nothing was far away. Just get on I-5 to reach sites very quickly. Also close to Del Mar. We rented a GPS which made driving a snap. (Avis gave us a nasty, old car.)

Fireworks in La Jolla were spectacular. So was the food. George's Ocean Terrace was spectacular and reasonable. Trattoria Aqua had great seafood with pasta. Prado good but not spectacular. McCormick's very good. Centio better than expected. Did not try hotel's main restaurant. (We had breakfasts in the Golf Cafe.) Great cold drinks everywhere. Incredible al fresco dining in La Jolla.

The Zoo is incredible ---- both the animals and rare trees. SeaWorld very good but pricy --- Cirque better than expected. Balboa Park is superb. We saw the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit. Gaslamp District looked touristy.

Don't miss La Jolla. It's heaven on earth. (Retire there if you can.) Want a cheaper stay near La Jolla and attractions? Try the nearby Hyatt Regency. Not as nice but reasonable when conventions not scheduled. Nice lobby.

The Lodge is worth the money. Great location. A golfer's dream.

  • Liked — The service, room, and location.
  • Disliked — Small parking spots, but not really a problem.
