“Loved The Lodge at Torrey Pines”
Reviewed August 6, 2006

My family and I spent three days at the Lodge at Torrey Pines and loved the facilities. The Lodge is designed in the craftsman style and the rooms reflect this style as well. The rooms were spacious, clean and beautiful. We had a few service glitches but none that weren't immediately fixed. We ate at both restaurants, The Golfer's Grill and A.R. Valentien. We had kids with us so the Golfer's Grill was a better fit for our family. the pool is a little on the small side but you can't beat the view of the ocean as you look out over the golf course. If we are ever in San Diego again, we will stay The Lodge at Torrey Pines.

Someone with amazing vision created this fantastic hotel. It looks great, with a lovely natural garden and a decent size pool. It could feel formal, and it would do if the hotel was anywhere in Europe, but the friendly staff ensure that it doesn't. The trips to the beach and the free use of the Cabanas is an excellent option.

The food is of very high quality although service seems a little chaotic at times. The rooms have everything you need, except enough light. The visionary clearly expected his or her guests to be able to see in the dark. They obviously didn't need to stay in touch with home or the office either, or they wouldn't use an outdated computer in a windowless phone kiosk as a business centre.

Overall though, an excellent and welcoming hotel for adults and kids alike.

Just returned from a week at the Lodge at Torrey Pines with my wife and 3 kids (including a toddler). Weather was flawless 75-80 degrees every day (even with record high temps inland). Rooms are large and perfectly appointed. Staff at front door, front desk, concierge station and restaurants were wonderful. Very busy week at TP (with golf tournament, business meetings, wedding, etc.) but the facility accomodated it all and the activity never felt like it intruded on our stay. Pool is heated saltwater (awesome) and was perfect for older kids and for the toddler (with steps leading in and shallow areas at both ends of the pool). Concierge arranged for free transport to La Jolla (in 2007 M-B S550) for shopping days and we loved the free beach cabana. Main restaurant was tremendous for breakfast and dinner. A wonderful experience.

This is definitely a 5-star experience and while it was not cheap, I left there thinking it is the best money I'll spend all year.

We stayed at the Lodge for a work vacation a few days ago. It is a nice hotel with friendly, efficient service. We were hoping there would be more to do - more of a resort property with multiple pools and kid friendly activities. They have two restaurants, AR Valentin, the formal restaurant is nice enough but had limited options for dinner, surprisingly a much more interesting lunch menu. The informal restaurant is near the golf clubhouse and less impressive - the menu had been gutted to accommodate the youth golf tournament. The garden view rooms are dark, as other reviews say, but well appointed and large. The greatest part of our stay was the beach program they have - FREE BEACH CABANAS! They will take you to the beach in the MB SUV and have meals and drinks for you while you are there (very expensive for a "boxed lunch" but hey, you are at the beach). The pool is small and also set very close to the golf course so that you feel you are in the middle of a busy sidewalk. However, the resort overall feel private and we rarely saw other guests. It is a low key, quiet property even though military air traffic is a constant. They must do something about their "business center" it is a computer inside a phone booth. Literally.

Our family has had the opportunity to stay at a number of great resorts and this was one of the best! The rooms were huge and as nice as any in which we have stayed. The proximity to the golf courses sets this place apart from others in the area. While the condition of the course was not quite up to par, the views were spectacular. The South Course will make an exceptional Open course. The resort has cabanas set up on the public beach approximately two miles away and we made our way to these every day. The service at the hotel was exceptional and food was very good and reasonably priced.

Highly overrated hotel. Very expensive for what you get. 550 $ / night for a room without a view. The rooms are dark with no special amenities. We would not stay there again.

We had never heard of The Lodge, so we stayed there with no preconceived notions. In fact, our reservations were originally for the Hilton Torrey Pines, which is next to The Lodge. Through a strange set of circumstances our reservations at the Hilton were messed up, so the staff at the Hilton suggested we stay at The Lodge, which had a few Signature rooms available. Since there was little choice at the time, we went to The Lodge not knowing what to expect. It turned out to be a wonderful experience. The craftsman style of the place appealed to both of us. There was also considerable attention to detail. The staff were friendly, helpful and welcoming. While I would have preferred a room with an ocean view, the room we had was more than adequate and it overlooked a beautiful little garden. As a diehard gardener this pleased me no end. We enjoyed sitting by the fireplace in the lobby and the views from the back of the hotel were spectacular. We had two casual dinners at the Lodge and both were excellent. In fact, the restaurant staff went out of their way to be attentive to our needs and they remembered us when we came back the following evening. We also enjoyed a wonderful walk in the Torrey Pines park which is close to the Lodge. If you stay at the Lodge, I highly recommend taking an evening walk in the park. The views of the Pacific at sunset were remarkable. In summary, I think that the Lodge is rather expensive when compared to other hotels of this caliber that we have visited, but when I look back on our stay I have to say that it was quite enjoyable and I would welcome the opportunity to stay there again.

The Lodge is modeled after the famed Gamble and Blacker houses in Pasadena – two of the finest examples of early 1900s Craftsman-style architecture. Its post-and-beam construction features a natural color palette, graceful wing-like rooflines, shingle and sandstone-bluff exteriors, clinker-brick masonry, rich woodwork and natural stone surfaces. Arrivals are greeted by doormen attired in kilted Scottish dress, while inside are 170 spacious guest rooms and suites designed for supreme comfort. The Lodge’s signature restaurant A.R. Valentien – rated Best Hotel Restaurant in the West by Sunset Magazine in 2015 – is a destination for fresh regional cuisine served in an elegant setting overlooking the Torrey Pines Golf Course. Artisan Table Dinners highlighting farm-to-table fare in a communal setting are offered weekly, while Executive Chef Jackson headlines The Lodge’s annual Celebrate the Craft event, one of Southern California’s premier showcases for regionally grown ingredients and innovative cooking and winemaking. For a more casual vibe, The Grill at The Lodge offers a full menu of favorites whether dining indoors or on the patio, while its bar is an ideal gathering place after a day on the course. The Spa at Torrey Pines features signature treatments themed around the beauty and purity of the Pacific coastline. This 9,500 square foot space uses botanical- and marine-based extracts from European product lines Phytomer, SkinCeuticals, Farmhouse Fresh and NV Organics to replenish and restore the body and mind. Additional features of The Lodge include a croquet lawn, heated outdoor pool and cabanas, whirlpool, outdoor terrace with chaise lounges, hiking at the adjacent Torrey Pines State Reserve, a fitness center and the Scripps Library, a public space featuring a pool table, board games and more. Adjacent to The Lodge, the Torrey Pines Golf Course is an iconic 36-hole course that hosts the PGA Tour’s annual Farmers Insurance Open.
