“Don't worry about the wildfires affecting your trip”
Reviewed November 8, 2007

People are reconsidereing their trips to San Diego becasuse of the wildfires, but there are no problems there. Air quality and roads etc are fine in the Coastal areas and San Diegans are so happy that visitors are there! I felt that the moment I checked into the Lodge...they were very reassuring about the status of the city post-wildfires.

I have stayed at the Lodge before and once again, they exceeded my expectations. The turn down service is top notch and teh smell of sage permeates the hallways, putting you in a zen mood. The spa (I highly recommend the rituals and Christy was fantastic) is dreamy and you walk out relaxed and refreshed.

The Lodge is craftsman style so the rooms seem dark, but not oppressive, and the hallways to your room seem like a maze, but if you ask anyone that works there, they will give you the most direct route to where you are going.

I highly recommend a stay at the Lodge and would return for the value for the price, the spa, the friendly and ATTENTIVE staff, the bed linens and the turn down service!

My wife and I just came back from a 3 night stay at the Lodge as part of a business conference event held there. We had high expectations given various reviews and I was really anxious to play the South golf course, site of next year's US Open and rated in the Top 100 You Can Play.

First the positives;
- the property, although quite small, is very nicely maintained and the building itself well done in a craftsman/mission style of architecture. It sits immediately behind the clubhouse of this muni golf course facility, with its ocean facing rooms having great views of the golf courses and ocean beyond them. However, many of the rooms are not golf course or ocean facing, so room selection is key.
- although we were there as part of a business function and all meals were associated with that (ie, catered), the food was very good at breakfast, lunch and dinner each day (which was held out on the lawn in front of the building)
- our room was sizable with a well appointed bedroom and bathroom
- parking can be valet or self-park in a small garage immediately behind the hotel building. Not sure why anyone would valet park given how close it is, but to each their own.
- there's an outdoor pool and the separate hot tub overlooks the golf course.

Now the negatives;
- our room was a ground floor unit with a small patio at the back of the building, Rm #253. Unfortunately, it felt like a cave since our patio faced the center courtyard, any view of which was blocked by a large rock outcropping
- lighting was totally inadequate in the bedroom as well as the bathroom. The bedroom had a few fixtures with tiffany style stained glass shades and low wattage lightbulbs. Had our room been on a higher floor I'm sure this wouldn't have been as much of a problem. The bathroom lighting design was inadequate for shaving or makeup...just 2 side lights for a double sink vanity.
- the spa is way overrated; the facility is small and there is no jacuzzi or cool down pool, in either a separate or co-ed area. My wife had a massage treatment which she said was absolutely wonderful, but that was all she liked about the facility.
- the Torrey Pines South Course is long and difficult (I'm a 5-6 handicapper), but it truly is a muni course with regards to conditioning, and this is far better of the two courses there. Locals get a tremendous break on greens fees; $40 vs guest rate of $181. And this course in no way is worth $181 (weekend rate). Sure the oceean views are wonderful and it has some very nice holes, but the conditioning was not resort like at all. Some fairways had serious brown spots.
- we had the bargain hotel group rate of $350 + $22 (self-park fee) per night. Even this seems high for what the property delivers.

We had previously planned to `splurge' for a stay at the Lodge at Torrey Pines so I could play the South Course, but never followed through on it. During this stay, we kept saying we were soooo glad we didn't spend our own money to stay there (when individual room rates would've been more like $450-550 per night. Would we go back again? Only if we weren't paying.

What an excellent golf course, I can't believe it's public as well! I'm a San Diego resident and I stayed at the lodge the first time I visited San Diego. The golfing is excellent. For a map and more information on the course itself for whoever is interested you can check out: [--]

A little bit of trivia: Torrey in the name "Torrey Pines" is actually a type of tree indigenous to the area. There are plenty of them on-site.

Fantastic Stay at The Lodge at Torrey Pines! The service is remarkable especially the concierge. They booked most of our dinner reservations and attractions and their recommendations were right on! Special cudo's to Lisa Marie and David at the concierge's desk Everyone is friendly and helpful from the doorman to the valet to the bell hops. We had a great stay, did not get a chance to enjoy dinner at Valentiens, but had a great breakfast there. The pool and hot tub were great to unwind in each afternoon after sightseeing in LaJolla. It is a bit on the pricey side, but worth every cent if you like exeptional service. They also offer a AAA discount which really helped.

We have stayed at the Lodge twice in the past year. My wife and I happened upon it the weekend of the Buick Open and loved it so much we returned several months later with our family.
We live 2 hours away, yet felt like we were a continent away. The Lodge's ambiance is unrivaled. It feels like a Scottish golf resort in wintertime. The smell of the wood burning fireplace, the kilt wearing staff and the rich wood appointments throughout impart a comfortable and unique experience.
The staff is 5-star. They will remember your names and your preferences. Never have I wanted to tip an employee as frequently as we tipped this staff. The resort is small yet feels large. Normally, you might want the reverse; but this works. You get the personal attention of a small lodge but the service and amenities of a large resort.
Restaurant and bar are first class. Had great meals both times.
And, there is the added bonus of having the great food/shop meccas of La Jolla and Del Mar within minutes. If you book ahead, the hotel will take you to dinner in their house Mercedes Benz.
During summer, they will escort you to a private beach area that they have secured unique access to.
The only fault I had was that the hotel was not able to put two rooms together nor adjacent for my family. What made that troubling was that it was the hotel was not near capacity. Still, I forgive them for what otherwise was a great experience both times.
We will be back!

Room: We got a room facing the garden which was very nice. We did not miss the golf course view at all and actually like the quiet of the room. The rooms are well appointed and conformtable but nothing special for the rating of this hotel.
Food: We ate at AR Valentine which as one of the best meals I have ever had. If you like regional, locally grown food cooked to perfection this is a must. We also had breakfast in room service and it was also very good.
Activities: My husband played golf both on the north course and south course, if you don't have a large group, walking on at twilight is the way to go. The pool was also very nice. The spa was first rate although it was missing an out door spa space. The treatments were wonderful.
1. Reserve the hotel car that takes you within 5 miles (La Jolla, Del Mar) early as it books up quickly.
2. Call the hotel to get the breakfast and free parking deal. American Express platnum card also offers a breakfast and $100 spa credit with late check out deal. You can combine both and get both the spa and the included breakfast.

We very much enjoyed our 4-day stay at The Lodge and would return if a special occasion presented itself. It is a fabulous hotel offering superb service and a location that offers great golf, nature walks and Ocean access.

We really liked the craftman-style rooms. The room was large, the bed was comfortable, the bathroom was very nice. The soap, shampoo, etc are as good as I've had. As our courtyard-facing room did not let in that much natural light, I would have liked a few more lights in the room, but its a pretty small issue.

The Lodge overlooks the Pacific Ocean. The beach is maybe a 15 minute walk and the hotel provides complimetary drop off and pick up service. We went to the beach and took advantage of the Lodge's complimentary covered beach chairs (which I believe are for free from June to September for one day if you are staying for 4 or more days). The hotel also provides complimentary towels, beach toys and a limited food menu at the beach.

Probably the best thing about this place is the service. Everyone from the valet parkers to the front desk to the people who cleaned the rooms were welcoming and seemed truly happy to be working there. We got some very good dining recommendations from the concierge and found the driver to be very helpful.

If there is a downside, its the price. The rooms are not cheap and there is not much scope for saving money by eating outside the hotel - there are not many cheap dining options close by. The hotel does offer complimentary car service into La Jolla, and I would recommend reserving that in advance as it was completely booked up for one of the nights we were there.

  • Liked — The hotel surroundings, the staff.
  • Disliked — Not enough natural light in the rooms.
