“Spoil Yourself!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2011

When seeking out the ideal spot to enjoy a 4-day spa retreat with my sister and daughters, we came across The Lodge. It met our needs perfectly! Luxury and then some!

We found the staff to be accommodating, warm, and professional. This hotel is a gracious example of the Arts and Crafts Movement, and that quiet casual elegance is extended throughout. The rooms are not just beautiful examples of craftsman styling with Tiffany touches, but spacious, and this really important when traveling with teens as their energy and stuff tends to require more space. Our room was clean and quiet, with very comfortable beds.

When making our reservation, we requested a microwave and fridge and those were ready and waiting in our room upon arrival. Great for cool drinks, and snacks! Coffee was also in the room.

The Grill is one of their two restaurants, which we found to be reasonably priced, quick and absolutely delicious! It offers both inside or patio dining and it's enjoyable to watch the practicing golfers or the vistas of a top-rated course overlooking the Pacific. Menu favorites include blueberry pancakes with granola and award winning hamburgers. We dined once at A.R. Valentein, and were treated to many special offerings from the gracious chef that night. Among them were fabulous desserts that were sure to please!

I particularly like the resort's location which is just close enough to Del Mar, La Jolla, and San Diego to be handy without actually being in the hub of activity. The concierge arranged San Diego Zoo tickets for several dollars less than the best AAA offers, and it took us just minutes to get there using the directions she provided. Next to the hotel is a large natural preserve with trails to pristine views of the Pacific and makes a great way to spend a morning. It was abloom with wildflowers and hikers when we spent in April. The hotel's large salt water pool, and the jacuzzi were wonderful to cool off and work out the kinks afterward. If the pool isn't enough, the spa staff can fix the rest. We each had several treatments to include facials, aromatherapy massages, and pedicures, and were happy with the quality of the treatments given.

If getting away from it all is on your mind, then this is a wonderful place to go about it!

I have stayed in a lot of places from Scotland to Mexico and have yet to find the level of service and attention to detail Torrey Pines offered. Perfect room, perfect dinning, perfect pool.

I stayed her for a few days R & R before a conference in San Diego. The staff were friendly and accomodating and the location is lovely (my room had a wonderful view across the golf course to the ocean. It is a bit off the beaten track if you don't want to drive much. The nearby beach at Torrey Pines reserve was beautiful for walking and the reserve itself, although small, is pleasant. La Jolla is not full of excitement but a pleasant place to spend a few days. The hotel spa was small but the staff were charming and the treatments were excellent. The restaurant probably rates itself higher than I would rate it but meals were pleasant and the staff could not be faulted.

The service at Torrey Pines will be hard to beat if you are competing. The pleasant staff is ready to open a door even if they are going in the opposite direction. The spa experience was excellent clean fresh with all the amenities including their facial washes and creams. The bed is super comfortable and the setting is breathtaking. There are no complaints about this experience.

I stayed here one night with my husband for a weekend getaway. The Lodge is a very unique, beautiful hotel -- as soon as we got onto the property, my husband said, "Wow, this really is a lodge." Every architectural detail was thought of, from the stained glass lamps in the room to the detail on the elevator doors. The views of the golf course and ocean from the lobby & property were stunning. We had a room on the 4th floor, with a balcony overlooking a garden. The bed was very comfortable and the room was very quiet. The food at the Grill was very good (Salad Nicoise and French Toast were both excellent) and good value. The Spa was elegant and relaxing.

However, for such a pricey hotel, I expected everything to be perfect, which it was not. They charge $22 for self-parking, which I thought was ridiculous in a suburban part of town. When we checked in, they did not offer to help us with our luggage to the room...we didn't have that much, but both of us did have both hands full. The shower in the room was narrow and didn't have the curved shower bar, nor magnets on the bottom of the shower curtain, which meant it billowed in on the occupant while showering. There was no "Do Not Disturb Sign" in the room upon check-in -- it was given to us during the turndown service, but that was after my husband had been woken up by housekeeping from a pre-dinner nap.

The Lodge is a very unique, beautiful hotel with a lot of positives and some negatives -- overall, it's not a good value for the price they charge, so I probably would choose somewhere else to stay next time I am in San Diego.

I've stayed at the resort several times over the last few years, the most recent being for the Del Mar Racetrack Opening Day. This is a quiet, peaceful hotel with incredible golf and ocean views. There are no white water ocean views as you are set back from the ocean, but there is a horizon-like view of the ocean and you are immersed in beautiful, natural surroundings. If you can, book the rooms overlooking the course. I am not a golfer, but one look at the course and you'll wish you were, it's breathtaking.

The spa is on the small side, but they make up for it with the quality of their services. The staff throughout the hotel are all extremely friendly and accommodating.

The food at the grill and AR Valentine are exceptional. My favorite is the corned beef hash and eggs from room service-yum!

I always book the room through AMEX platinum and have received the room upgrade each time along with great amenities.

The hotel and the rooms are craftsman style which can tend to be a bit dark, but that just adds to the elegance and coziness of the hotel.

As my traveling companion said, this is a hotel best suited for the just wed and nearly dead.

The location and physical plant are both outstanding. However, because of its relative isolation, it was a bit surprising that over the Christmas Holidays there was no entertainment or really anything lively about the hotel. The service in both the bar and restaurant ranged from indifferent to hostile as well as inefficient. The food for the special prix fixe Christmas dinner was average, at best, and took way too long between courses. Under different circumstances, we might have enjoyed a two hour dinner but not because it was simply inefficient.

For a one-night special occasion, I might recommend staying here but it was way too expensive and too dull for a more extended stay. There are better comparably priced alternatives nearby. It was, however, convenient for an early morning walk on at the outstanding Torrey Pines Golf Course.
