“A perfect place for the family.”
Reviewed April 8, 2011

Enjoyed a wonderful weekend at LJBTC in March. Facilities were great. Lunch at Club Dining and Dinner at the fabulous Marine Room. Caesar Salad made table side and gorgeous views of the sunset. Even saw the elusive green flash. Take the family, relax, enjoy yourself. Great food up the street. Jeff's Burgers, Piatti, The Cheese Shop. Grocery store real close.

This was our first visit to the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club (LJBTC) but definitely won't be our last. My son, a high school varsity tennis player and daughter, happy if she's sitting anywhere near the Pacific Ocean and a palm tree, accompanied me for five days of recreation in the San Diego area. We stayed in a cottage on the Club golf course. Magnificent. Private courtyard with BBQ pit and patio furniture. Two bedrooms (one with twins and the other a queen), two full baths, full kitchen, family room with flat screen plus dining area with bar. Spacious, meticulously clean. Every single member of the staff is incredibly accommodating from the front desk, to housekeeping, from the guard(s) at the front entrance to the dining areas, from beach front personnel to tennis shop. There are smiles everywhere but not a pretentiousness or smothering attitude. Someone is hiring very well! The La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club has a private beach with magnificent views. The food in the dining area is tasty (albeit a bit pricey) but we ventured out (to Jamba Juice in nearby Vonns) and to our favorite, Barbarella, for outstanding food. The Club is located less than five minutes away from La Jolla Shores, Harry's (a must-go-to for breakfast and/or lunch), La Jolla Cove (we were fortunate to be there during the seal pupping season). Even the post office, Warwicks book store (oldest continuously operated family owned bookstore in the U.S.) and Gerard's (another fabulous eatery in La Jolla) are very nearby. Downtown San Diego, Little Italy (scrumptious, reasonably priced meal at Buon Appetito), the harbor for whale watching tours (recommend Dennis Conner's America) and the airport are a short 15 minute drive away. My son took several private tennis lessons at LJBTC and played several matches. While we were there, the Dartmouth tennis team was in a tournament against Utah. I believe there are 12 outdoor lit (until 10pm) courts. Rain was a bit problematic on our trip and the courts take 2 hours to dry but the Club has a staff quickly on court the moment the rain stops squeegee'ing the courts dry. Also a very nice merchandise selection and friendly staff at the Tennis Shop...particularly Kaitlyn and Jessica. Anthony at the front desk and Daniel M. of the beach staff were particularly kind and welcoming. We have no complaint other than the fact that the Tennis Shop only has one ball hopper available to guests and if it's rented, you are out of luck should you wish to work independently on your serve or off of the two backboards. And if you don't bring your own tennis balls, the only way to gain access is to rent the elusive hopper or buy a can of balls. A nice touch would be to offer a complimentary can of balls to each guest who checks into the Club for tennis hitting purposes. And the Club really doesn't have a business center. The front reception desk prints boarding passes and the one computer available didn't seem to be able to access or continuously access the internet. Bring a laptop if you need the internet. There's free WiFi in the rooms. Other than that, a delightful stay and a place to which we will definitely return.

Extremely disappointed! The room was dirty, walls had debris on them and a cockroach crawled out from under the bed. Called housekeeping, took twenty minutes for them to get there. Roach still under bed and they said "Water bug from the ocean, then probably came from the water pipes, then said housekeeping next door". Then they said they never use this room for guests because of this particular reason. Why did they give it to me! Couldn't move us til next day then said had to wait another day. Should have left right away. Beautiful location but a rathole of a place!

Great location at the beach. The tennis courts are good and you can be on the beach right outside of your room. The view of the ocean is beautiful. The breakfast room has a stunning view to the waves, the service is excellent, the food is average. The comfort of the sofa bed was not satisfactory so we don't recommend this option. There are no duvets, just blankets. The staff is friendly and the property beautiful. However we sent an e mail to the hotel asking for dining recommendations, but received no answer. If we had known that they provided barbeques at the beach we would have chosen to do this.

2000 Spindrift Drive is the mailing address. Should you enter this address into your GPS, it will take you to some odd back door entrance... The entrance is actually on Paseo Dorado just off of Calle De La Plata.

About a dozen of us congregated here for new year's last month from various parts of Canada, and I think we were all really looking forward to an enjoyable time on the beach over new year's. This is an old hotel that shows its age. My room had a king bed but the furnishings, bathroom and general decor are out of the 80s. Located on a prime stretch of beach in La Jolla, a little updating would make it a star attraction for anyone who enjoys the beauty and expanse of a southern California beach. When I arrived, I noted 3 things. First, there is NO wireless internet. You can, however, hook your laptop up to their network using a CAT5 cable (provided). Unfortunately, my connection did not work. Second, when I walked in the room, one of the robes was strewn across the bed and a second was leisurely hanging on a clothes hanger which presumably means that they were used. I found a hand towel on the dresser and garbage in the garbage can. Apparently, the staff had used the room the previous night to prepare for a staff holiday party, but no one had bothered to re-clean the room afterwards. And third, the room safe did not work.

After telling the front desk staff, one of their security staff came by to look at the safe. The staff person looked as if she was disassembling it, but finally just took it away and brought me back a new unit. The cleaning staff returned to clean the room, although they left the 2 (presumably) used robes and towel behind, and I ended up asking for 2 clean robes the next day. And my internet connection didn't work during my entire stay. In any case, I was none too impressed.

New year's dinner was great. The hotel set us up a table with linen, cutlery and glassware on the beach, and we barbecued and roasted marshmellows, in spite of the cool evening weather. But it was fun nonetheless! Everything was set out for us, including sticks for roasting the marshmellows!

The best thing about this place (besides the location and the tennis courts) are the very nice people in the bar and restaurant. They are pleasant, happy and friendly. They were as happy on new year's day as they were the other days, in spite of having to work!

I've stayed at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club many times. Admittedly, at times, the service was a bit 'snobby', but more often, friendly. The last two times I visited, the clerk at the desk and the 'manager' on duty were down-right rude. In May, 2009, the clerk actually told me that the rate I was paying (over $200/night for a basic room) was a 'bargain' and I should appreciate it because it wasn't going to be offered again as the economy 'was rebounding". I saw this same clerk again in December, 2010, and he again was rude. It had been raining in CA for 3 days, the hotel parking lot had about 10 cars in it, and he refused to upgrade our room (as had been common for many years when the hotel wasn't busy). This time he lectured me on "do you know how much those hotel rooms cost?". So, we checked out the next day instead of staying for 4 nights as originally planned. We moved to another hotel that wasn't on the beach, but offered beautiful rooms in a more modern facility (we couldn't go on the beach anyway as it was raining constantly) for half the price. La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club - after almost 17 years of visiting, you have finally lost our business. We'll stay somewhere where the facilities are worth the price of the room and walk a block or two to the beach and probably save hundreds of dollars. Your facilities have deteriorated year after year as now your attitude has as well.

Please accept my sincerest apologies for the way you were treated by our front desk. We try to upgrade guests on a complimentary basis to beach front accommodations whenever possible and especially make an effort to do this for our first time guests. However, we are not able to do this every time. Please contact me directly next time your travels take you to La Jolla and I will be happy to personally make your reservations and try to accommodate you as best as possible. Thank you.
