We just got home from a 5 night stay here. We were in San Diego for a family wedding get-together. We had booked a room with a king size bed here directly through the hotel and they had a special at the time that after staying a certain number of nights they gave us one night free. The price with one night free worked out to be less than the Best Western down the street. Like a previous reviewer mentioned, we also asked for the quietest room available and we got one on the third floor about midway down the longer hall, facing towards Silverado Street. The bed was comfortable and the room was a good size, clean and well maintained. The bathroom was very modern and also well maintained. We slept well every night and did not have any noise problems to wake us up. We noticed that due to the proximity of the restaurant/bar on the first floor, and the breakfast room/outdoor patio on the second floor right above it could pose noise problems for rooms located nearby on the second floor, as mentioned by a previous reviewer. We enjoyed the included continental breakfasts every morning out on the patio, especially the waffle-making machines. The breakfast room was well maintained and manned during breakfast hours to replenish low supplies. Just don't leave your food unattended out on the patio, not even for a second. We watched seagulls swoop in a couple of times to gulp down whole hard boiled eggs, waffles, toast, etc. while the guest had gone back to get more food or something from the breakfast room. Lots of little birds also hang out waiting for unattended food but aren't quite as aggressive as the seagulls. The hotel is located conveniently in the village within walking distance of everything, including the ocean. There is an $18 a day charge for valet parking but we felt this was worth it. Just call down 5 minutes ahead of when you need your car and it's there waiting for you at the front door. Dropping it off was just as easy and convenient especially when coming back late to the hotel after a long day out with
family. The staff here is so professional, accommodating, friendlly and helpful. Housekeeping did a great job of taking care of our room every day. We would definitely stay here again.

We stayed here for our honeymoon. We went on this location based on price and location. We were pleased with both and the service was as good as any we have had anywhere. The team there was welcoming and went out of there way to help us, offer suggestions on what to do or where to eat. It was clean and without a doubt would return here one day. We would recommend to anyone that needed a place to stay.

Room Tip: Suites with jacuzzi was great

When visiting La Jolla we usually stay some place right on the beach. But not in July and August when the rates for beach properties are out of sight. If you still want La Jolla and want to be within walking distance of downtown and La Jolla Cove, at a fairly reasonable price, Empress Hotel is the answer.

Our third floor room was bright, fresh, clean and gave us plenty of space. The WiFi, TV and air conditioning all worked fine. The windows opened letting in plenty of fresh air. The free breakfast had plenty of options and was well organized. Seating was offered inside or in a lackluster patio area

The bathroom unfortunately was very small compared to the room size. There were no hooks to hang up anything, so clothes go either on the floor or on top of the toilet. My wife said they offer good complimentary toilet products. We both found it impossible to shower in the walk in shower with out creating a small lake on the floor.

We used the valet parking, which increases the cost by $18 per night, but it worked flawlessly and is almost a necessity in La Jolla Village.

On the whole this hotel is on the ball, well run and helps to moderate La Jolla's high season rates.. If you want quick access to a strip of sand, look else where and be prepared to pay a lot more.

We came across this hotel due to the location. We were very please with the friendliness of the staff. They recommended great dining options and pointers for our stay. Our room was large and very clean. The wallpaper and decor in the rooms could be updated but the bathrooms are large and contemporary. Clean, friendly, easy stay.

We had been staying at a friend's place during our 9 day trip to San Diego and decided to book a hotel for our last night so we could be within walking distance of the water, shops & restaurants in downtown La Jolla. The location of the Empress is great and the room was clean. However, when we checked in we specifically requested the quietest room possible since we'd been having trouble sleeping. The bed was comfortable and the room was quiet at night but starting at about 6:30AM, we could hear everything that was going on on the floor. Doors were slamming, things were knocking into the walls, and then the garbage trucks were emptying the dumpsters which were right below our window. The walls are thin and either we had extremely noisy neighbors or housekeeping was not making any effort to keep their noise down. Also, when we checked in, the valet (although very nice) was not well-informed about the hotel. We asked him if we could get some non-down pillows from housekeeping and he told us they were gone for the night and he didn't think they had any other pillows available. Luckily we're not allergic to down, it's just a comfort preference, but if we had been that would have been a big problem. Since when is there no housekeeping staff available at 9pm? What if our room hadn't been clean or we needed extra blankets or something? I heard that they have a full remodel planned for fall which is good because the rooms (except the bathroom which was recently redone) are tired and really need updating. We got a last-minute deal via Hotels.com but we now wish we would have paid $30-50 more for a more upscale property.

Room Tip: Request a room on the street side of the hotel, especially if you're staying on a Sunday night...

Reviewed this hotel several years ago when we visited La Jolla. We made a return visit recently and found the hotel to be just as welcoming and comfortable as we remembered. The staff at the Empress are so professional and accommodating. The rooms are clean, and the beds are VERY comfortable. The continental breakfast that is served in the mornings is good, if not that interesting. This hotel is convenient to pretty much anything you want to do in La Jolla. This is absolutely one of our favorite hotels. We hope to return soon.

On paper, this is a very nice hotel in a very nice location. And, after reading several reviews on Tripadvisor we booked this hotel. I had specifically asked for two queen beds in our room. We checked in and went to our room, only to find that it had one king-sized bed. We went down to the front desk and were very nicely told we could have a roll away sent up. No thanks. We were given a different room that did have two queen-sized beds. It also had chips in the furniture and torn wallpaper. But the room looked clean, so we settled in. After dinner, we came back to our room, intending to get to sleep early. It had been an exhausting trip and we needed a good night's sleep. We turned off the lights and the tv, and then we heard it - the bar band. We tried to sleep but we could hear every word the singer sang. It was like our beds were in the bar. I called the front desk and explained we were trying to sleep and all we could hear as the band. She said she would "let them know." A half hour later, they were still playing and we were still awake. I called again. The same girl said she told the band, but there was a wedding party. The next call, the girl said she would tell the manager and that the bar was separately owned. She added that they usually put wedding guests in our room because they would be in the bar listening to the band. At some point, the manager called us and said he would change our rooms the next day. Finally, we all gave up and put on head phones and earplugs and fell asleep, even more exhausted. The next morning, we were shook awake by doors slamming next door in the breakfast room, as well as people dumping garbage in the dumpsters outside. When we opened our curtains, we realized the people eating breakfast could look right into our room.
We had breakfast later on, and it was an above average continental breakfast.
On our way out, we stopped at the front desk to ask about our room switch.
We were told that our luggage would be put in our new room by the time we got back.As we were standing at the desk, another guest asked if we had been woken up by the spin class across the street. I guess it wasn't just us.
Our second night was much better. The room looked as worn out as the first; there was even a pile of saw dust by the bathroom door. At least this time, we did not hear the band.
I would rate this hotel as 'terrible,' but the staff was nice and seemed to want to help and the manger gave us a discount on our room.
Be careful what room you take.

Room Tip: Bring ear plugs!
