My wife and I stayed 3 days....the perfect village location for walking to the shops, museums, and along the shore. Room was nicely appointed, clean, and comfortable. Everything worked fine (lights, A/C, hot water, TV, iron, elevator, etc). Restaurant looked nice. In-room safe to store valuables. The free morning breakfast was abundant and fresh; included assorted pastries, bagels, fruit, hot and cold cereals, yogurt, cofee and tea, milk, juices, hard boiled eggs, waffles, and more. Enjoy breakfast and free newspaper in the breakfast room with TV, on the patio, or bring a tray to your room...great. The desk and valet staff were courteous and helpful, and Jason and Ben were especially nice to us.

Great hotel. With my family we stayed a few days in a double queen room. Big room, great furniture, superb bathroom with very big shower. At walking distance there are great beaches with sea lions, the park, shops and restaurants. breakfast is good with coffe, oj, milk, cereals, fruit and croissants that we European love. You can make waffle, too. Also newspaper. The indoor room for breakfast is a little bit small.

Empress Hotel definitely surprised us in a good way. Although the "very nice room" we were promised at check-in turned out to be directly over the breakfast room (not fun), the somewhat outdated space was perfectly adequate and had a very lovely bathroom. Need to udpate those old analog TV's though!! The Empress is in a great location - walking distance to almost everything!!! The breakfast was nothing to write home about, but there are so many other choices in La Jolla, we chose to go elsewhere. If I were returning alone I would stay here again. As a couple, hmmmm....probably not so much.

Room Tip: Be sure to ask to be far away from the breakfast room!!!!!!!

La Jolla is as close to Nirvana as you'll find. Great beaches, shopping, restaurants, local sights, etc. Our vacation was only enhanced by a great experience at The Empress. Wonderful room. Helpful staff (especially Jason, Ben, and Molly). Central location.

Room Tip: If you have a large family like ours, ask for the suite — plenty of room in 2 rooms.

I chose this hotel on the basis of the reviews and was not disappointed. The staff were super efficient, friendly and helpful. The location is great - guess my only complaint was the high valet costs, but that seems to be a La Jolla standard. Will definitely come back on my next trip to San Diego.

Upon reserving a room we had requested to have a two queen room with a roll out cot as we had five people in the room. This was added by the attendant at the time of the reservation. Upon check in we were informed that the cot was in the room, but in point of fact it was not. We were then told by the front staff that they were unable to locate one. We checked a short time later and were told that they had tried for blow up mattresses and cots at nearby hotels and were unable to find one. It seemed to us that they did not really care about accommodating us. Finally we told them that we absolutely needed something as we could not have three people in the same bed ( males and females). We were also told that we should not have been booked into that room since it was smaller and for fire codes it should not have a cot in it...!

Finally a person came to the room and said that they found a mattress in the far corner of the basement that we could use. They set it up, my children looked for rats could not find any so she used it.

For the problem the comped the parking which was nice.

Beds were saggy and bathroom had a weird sliding door set up.

I do not usually write any reviews but for the price you pay for this hotel the service was not there.

It was quiet, the room was clean and the view from on the roof was amazing. The staff were very friendly. The breakfast was in a nice area where you could eat inside or out on a patio. We would definitly go stay there again.
