“Had a great experience!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 13, 2013

Rooms clean, very tight/small kitchenette but it works, tight/small bathroom but it works, large/NICE balcony, great views, decent breakfast (great waffles), nice staff, good housekeeping service, loved the pool/hot tub area but there is a slight hike to get there. You can get to Prospect Pt which is the street with all the restaurants are by either walking up the steep Coast Blvd or taking a short cut by stairs. (A lot of stairs) We did both and it's not too bad but don't expect your older relatives to do it very easily. We loved Jose's Mexican restaurant on Prospect. (happy hour M-F 4pm-? has great drink/food specials) This is a great find. Would DEF go back! <3

Room Tip: DEF get a ocean front room!

Dear Carrie,

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel. We do appreciate it. We’re so glad to read the long list of features that you love about the hotel, and we’re equally happy that you would definitely return. (Be sure to book directly with us so that you get our Repeat Guest Discount.) Our hotel is a vintage La Jolla property built by Max Heimburge in 1959. The kitchenette and bathroom sizes are from that era. We also offer fully remodeled suites from 350 to 1,000 square feet in size if you would like to try a different room type on your next visit. Regardless of size and remodel date, our guests really appreciate the ability to stock and prepare their own food in our kitchens and kitchenettes. You’re right that we have a bunch of stairs leading up to our Terrace level of suites. We walk them daily ourselves! They do, however, afford us the panoramic ocean view and first-class location on the seaside bluff of La Jolla Cove. We love our unique property, and we can’t wait to welcome you back for your return trip.

I am a little late in writing this review, however, our family of four (2 adults/2 kids - 14/12) stayed here 3 nights in March during our spring break vacation. We too were encouraged by the other reviews and took a chance on booking. Our requirements are simple - clean/friendly staff / good location - and were were not disappointed. We had an ocean view suite which appeared to be newly renovated and had a nice kitchenette and bathroom; all were clean. We had no trouble with noise from other guests (even w/ a traveling HS soccer team who was there at the same time) and the staff at the front desk were extremely pleasant and accomodating to all our requests. Breakfast was adeqate to start our day (although we got there early before the crowd), the pool/hot tup sufficient to end our day and the ocean views - breathtaking, especially during sunset on the top deck of the hotel. Access to rooms is through open air stairwells/hallways which would benefit from a good cleaning/upgrade as they were a bit grundgy. However, the suite was a great value, the location ideal and the staff friendly. In summary, we enjoyed our time at your hotel and would certainly recommend it to others visiting LaJolla and hope to make it back again soon.

You can't beat the views, nor the location across from Scripps park. That said, the rooms are vintage and odd layouts. Bathrooms could use an update. Overall we enjoyed our stay and would return assuming we could get same great rate!

I was encouraged by a lot of the reviews on here and also after hearing that the hotel had been on "Hotel Impossible" and had made a lot of improvements. However the reality was much less encouraging.

1) Overall - this is a borderline 2.5 star hotel, it is fairly clean, but it is very dated, fairly noisy, wireless internet was weak, elevator was a bit scary, water pressure in the shower was average at best, beds were not very comfortable, window blinds/curtains were dirty, and the smell from the seals/sea lions in the cove was sometimes overbearing. It did have a promising breakfast spot on the roof, and if you had a room on the ocean side you had a great view (however the smell on that side was worse!)

2) Service - We arrived around noon and were told that our room wasn't quite ready yet, but they took our number and would call us when it was ready and gave us a detailed map of the town, but didn't offer to store our bags. No phone call was ever made and when we arrived again after the 3pm check in time, the new desk person had no idea that we had arrived earlier. There was no indication on the phone in the room of how to contact the front desk, so we just attempted to call the full number listed on the key card, which after dialing "8" rung the front desk. We asked for additional towels to be brought to the room and it took almost 30 minutes for them to arrive (the hotel is not very big, so this was a bit surprising). We had an early departure and needed a ride to the airport, so I asked the front desk if they could either call us a cab, or if there was a shuttle service to the airport. The desk person took our info and said they would set up a ride for us and would call me to confirm. They called to confirm and said that we would have a ride at our desired time but didn't leave any details. When we came down for our ride, it was a private car service which cost $50! I could have called a cab and gotten to the airport for much cheaper, but had to go with the service because we were on a time crunch. (It would have been nice to know that they'd scheduled a private car, since I thought I had indicated that I was looking for a cheaper option).

3) Rooms / Sleep - The walls of the rooms allowed for a lot of noise (possibly complicated by the fact that our room was right next to the elevator). Our room in particular had a kitchen(ette) (stove/burners, sink, small refrigerator, limited pots/plates/bowls/utensils), which was a bonus. TV remote was a bit confusing to figure out, but I wasn't there to watch tv so not really a negative. The bed was terrible in my opinion, and both my fiancee and I woke up with sore backs each morning (we are mid-30's and don't normally have this problem). The shower sometimes took a while for the water to get hot, and the water pressure was average at best. There was also a small window on the exterior wall, that was a bit too exposing, and when you close the blinds, they were very dusty. Overall the room is quite dated and could use some freshening up. Also, we had a patio but it basically looked at the elevator so we had to keep the window curtains shut most of the time to avoid having people stare in at us as they step off the elevator. Did I mention it was loud?

4) The pool and hot tub were nice, but basic. The roof-top deck was nice and had a great view other than the smell of animal poo (depending on the time of day it was either really bad, or not very noticeable). The attendants at the breakfast were nice and indicated that they were working on a plan for a full restaurant, which would be nice. Parking is an additional fee of $20 per day, which is pretty pricey, considering they have plenty of parking available, it would be nice to offer guests either free parking, or a cheaper daily price. The elevator on our side of the building was scary and slow (friends said the other elevator was the same). On the floor that we were on, we had to walk up 1/2 flight of stairs then transfer to another stairwell to walk down the stairs (yet this is indicated as a fire exit?)

5) Value - I'm torn on this one, the price we paid wasn't terrible considering some of the other options in town, but it still seemed like they could make some upgrades and be a little more friendly/caring about their customers and it would go a long way. The hotel is in a great spot if you are looking to stay near the town with all of the shops/bars/restaurants, however, if you are looking for beach action, find something in La Jolla Shores, there's not really a beach at the Cove (the small beach area seemed to always be closed due to the seals/sea lions laying out).

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the elevator, and if choosing an ocean view room, ask for one on the "...

Thank you for taking the time to review of our hotel. We continually work on improvements to the hotel and have recently purchased new beds and bedding for every room. Our elevators are regularly serviced and just passed state inspection. While the ride might not be as smooth as a brand new elevator, they are safe and well maintained. Our rooms are guaranteed to be ready at 3:00pm, but we are happy to check you in early whenever possible. Unfortunately, we cannot always do so as often we are sold out or very close to sold out and we have a 115 rooms to turn around by 3:00pm. Our housekeeping department works diligently to get the rooms cleaned as quickly as possible, however cleanliness is their top priority. Therefore, we are not always able to check you in early however, we will always offer a parking pass and of course we will hold your bags for you until check in. Our hotel overlooks the world famous La Jolla Cove and It is known for its pristine water, snorkeling, scuba diving and a “swimmers beach”. We are very fortunate to be located in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Thank you for choosing La Jolla Cove Suites for your visit and we hope to welcome you back again.

We stayed for two nights, very large one bedroom suite with king sized bed, full kitchen, living room and beautiful view of the ocean. The room was updated, bed very comfortable and it was nice to open the doors to the balcony and listen to the surf and seals. The accommodations met our needs. If your primary needs are room with a view, a comfortable bed and moderate updates (not ultimate luxury) this is a wonderful place. Great location for restaurants and seeing the cove on foot. Breakfast was included...continental with made to order waffles on the rooftop dining and lounge area. Pool accommodations with hot tub as well as gas grills if you want to cook in. Wonderful location for home base for day trip to San Diego. We would stay there again on a return trip.

Room Tip: We stayed on the sixth floor, which was a quick walk down a few steps to the rooftop lounge area for...

I have stayed at this hotel in the past and fell in love with the location and view! The beach is just steps away! If your looking for a fancy 5 star room then this may not be the exact hotel for you BUT! The service we received was definitely 5 star hotel quality!
We were so exhausted from a long drive and couldn't wait to enjoy a relaxing next couple of days, upon our arrival the gentleman working the night shift at the front desk was very polite and provided us with EXCELLENT customer service which is always refreshing! =)
Downside-Rooms and bedding are somewhat outdated.
Overall, we enjoyed our stay and the weather was beautiful!

We stayed in La jolla for a couple of nights. The location of this hotel was perfect, right on the beach, previous guests complained about the noise from the seals...its true you can hear them but its kinda all part of the coastal adventure, plus I always travel with earplugs!
There's an outdoor pool at the back of the hotel but we didn't use it. Had a problem with some dirty linen which was resolved quickly by staff at the front desk and they deducted the parking charge from my bill as compensation...which I was glad for coz $20/night is steep.
Breakfast was good and it was a nice surprise to start our day on the roof top terrace with a beautiful view of the cove. Would stay here again, definitely worth the extra for an ocean view room.

Room Tip: pay the extra for ocean view just take ear plugs if you're a light sleeper
