La Jolla Cove Hotel & Suites
Ranked #18 of 24 Hotels in La Jolla
Reviewed February 1, 2013

La Jolla is the gem of the San Diego area. If you have time, please spend some leisurely hours enjoying all the wonderful community has to offer. If you are looking for a somewhat reasonably priced hotel and your plans require a seaside accomodation and walking distance to downtown galleries, restaurants, and intriging shops, this hotel is the place to consider.
Positive ammenities: 1.) located directly across the street from the ocean and a lovely grassy park. Short walking distance along the ocean front walks to Children's Beach, the beautiful beach that many locals have brought their children for beach-side picnics and swimming for many years. Currently political conundrum with the seals vs the beach goers, but certainly everyone enjoys this beautiful location. 2.the hotel is a short uphill walk from downtown, 3.) the hotel also has a separate pool area and a wonderful roof top area for breakfasts with the best view in town. The breakfast is pretty standard fare, but certainly adequate for a start to your day.4. a good bed is a strong requirement for me and I was glad to learn that all rooms have had bed upgrades down recently. We found our comfortable and on the firmer rather than softer side.
Downsides: 1.) unfortunately, the abundant sea lions and harbor seals and the plethoria of cormorants, pellicans, and seagulls have created an "odiforous boquet", not entirely unpleasant. 2.) the hotel appears to be a 1950's era property and is kept up quite nicely. If you are a Hilton or Marriott customer, the room amenities will be dissapointing as a full upgrade of bathroom fixtures, etc. could really help here as well as higher quality of room furniture. All the suites have a nice coffee maker, small refrigerator, and microwave.
The room you must reserve is an ocean front view. I got a good rate on Book IT.com; don't pay full rack rate here...there are many ways you can get a discount on this property.
Tip: If you want their best remodeled room, they have one bedroom suites that are called their deluxe rooms. Whjile I didn't see one of these rooms, I was told they are fully refurbished; I was offered one of these for $60 more per night but declined. If you are going to spend a lot of time in your room this is the way to go, but really, you want to stay here because of the view and the location.
You will find the staff here very pleasant and very helpful. You can find other ocean side properties here in La Jolla that have superior amenities but this hotel is a good blend of price and value.

We, my boyfriend & I, stayed here for a Saturday night in January 2013. We had a one bedroom oceanfront suite.

The good: As others have mentioned, the location is fantastic. Downtown La Jolla is a quick walk away. The suite was large with a great view.

The bad: The bedroom was extraordinarily hot. We tried opening the windows, but as the window opens to a block wall a few feet away, no breeze was possible. Plus the sounds of the seals in the cove is not the most pleasant sound while trying to sleep. Luckily we found a fan in one of the closets, but it was still really warm & uncomfortable. The bathroom also had a strong smell of paint. Parking costs $20/day.

All-in-all, it felt overpriced. We didn't try the complimentary breakfast. Not sure I'd recommend this hotel to others.

Dear Molly,

I am glad to hear that you enjoyed our location, it’s hard to beat! I’m very sorry to hear of your discomfort with too much heat in your room. The heat works very well in those rooms (although it can take a few minutes) and we recommend that you keep the thermostat at around 75 degrees as a comfortable temperature during the winter. I want you to know that we really care about your experience at our hotel and that It would be my pleasure to personally assist you with a future stay. I promise we will do everything possible to make it an experience you can rave about. Please feel free to call on me if I can be of assistance.

Sincerely,

The hotel couldn't have a better location in La Jolla if it tried. That said, we had an oceanfront one bedroom suite that was great for a weekend getaway. The kitchenette was tiny, but a nice bonus, but was missing a much needed microwave. The staff was friendly and helpful and the complimentary breakfast was a nice perk. The $20 for parking each night was price gouging. The rooftop was a sweet secret that was mentioned as an aside and we took full advantage of it. Sunsets with a glass of vino and early mornings with coffee and a paper, wow! It didn't hurt that the weather was a warm and clear 80' in January! They do need to spend some money on the inside of the units to make them a bit more up to date. But for the price, this was an amazing value.

Room Tip: Request the higher rooms for the least unobstructed views and the least traffic noise and by all mea...

Used booking.com and the no cancellation rate of 80 per night. What a deal! Avoided the 15 per day parking by using street. Be careful doing this as the parking limit is 2hr unless after 6 pm or weekend. Great breakfast on the roof and no complaints. Clean facility and friendly staff. Thanks to Hotel Impossible for making us aware of this gem. Had a blast watching the seals and wildlife.

Our family of five stayed here for one night in late December. We had two adjoining bedrooms and a living area with a kitchenette. The views were amazing - from our room we could see the cliffs and hear the sea lions. We loved it. Yes, the hotel is older and not ritzy but it was clean and comfortable. Our younger two enjoyed the heated pool which is a good size - bigger than many other hotel pools. The breakfast was fine and the view from the dining room made for a lovely start to the day. We found the staff very pleasant and helpful especially Jeannie who had gone out of her way to help us with our booking. It was an easy walk to the shops. All in all a very charming location.

I must say I was quite disappointed in La Jolla Cove Suites. Their saving grace for us was the view and their front desk staff named Sebastian? This young man was fabulous and will go far with his great customer service skills and courteous attitude.

We booked a oceanfront suite- Our suite, however, was not very sweet. It was dark, freezing, and smelled of paint. The bathroom was tiny & horribly outdated (not to mentioned the calcified rotting bathroom fixtures). The bedroom was located on the interior hall- it was very noisy & there was no heat in the room- we had to sleep fully clothed with all the blankets. (We did bring this heating concern up with staff- they said I'm sorry to hear that).

All this being said- I still think this facility has great potential. More upgrades will go a long way here! The view from the roof was absolutely beautiful! The continental breakfast was great.

I appreciated the view but I do not think we will be staying here again.

Room Tip: I reccommend anything with a oceanfront view- it can't be beat! Stay away from rooms with a inte...

La Jolla Cove is one of the Scenic stops on the 57 mile tour around the San Diego area and La Jolla Cove Suites overlooks the beautiful scenic park and ocean front. The continental breakfast is very very nice and the Staff is extremely friendly and helpful.

What I don't like is the 1950's style rooms and lack of quite. The suite come with a very small kitchenette with a Stove and no microwave. Who uses a stove when on Vacation? The noise from outside and all adjacent rooms was extremely loud, as if no walls existed. Heating was provided by a floor unit which was barely adequate and dried the air too much. For the price I expected a little more luxury, but I was paying for the view, which I enjoyed.

Room Tip: Ask for Ocean view.
