My wife and I (we are in our 60's) recently did the afternoon sea cave kayak tour during our visit to La Jolla and San Diego. There were paddlers of all ages and paddling abilities. The 2 guides (Chris and Eric?) were experienced and excellent. The company and guides are very safety conscious, even providing helmets in addition to PFD's and instruction. There are lockers and changing rooms provided. The store is within easy walking distance of the beach launch site. So there is no wasted travel time. In addition to the safety aspect, the guides presented just enough humor and information to make the paddling more educational and fun. We paddled past beautiful homes, over leopard sharks and garibaldi fish, past sea lions and into a sea cave. One guide was actually in the water in a wet suit in the cave to guide the kayaks, ensuring a safe paddle. Although the company uses sit-on-top kayaks, it was winter and the water temperature was maybe 60 degrees, the paddling was very comfortable. There were even young children in the group, whose parents paddled the double kayaks for them. I would definitely recommend using this company for this activity as an educational and fun experience for those of all ages and paddling experience.

My husband & I had a wonderful time kayaking with LJK. Our guides were professional, hilarious and wanted everyone to have an enjoyable experience. There is a short movie telling people what to expect so there are not any surprises. The store has lockers, restrooms and dressing rooms.
The beach is a short walk from the store. At the beach you get your kayak, oar and instructions about entering the ocean - yes there is a technique - and paddling. We stayed together as a group while the guides pointed out the leopard sharks, fish and sea lions, and provided some history about the area. They even guided us - two at a time - into a sea cave. All in all a terrific experience.
Because I didn't plan well, we drove back to our hotel in wet clothes. So bring some dry clothes and a towel so you can change after you are finished. Also bring those straps to hold your sun glasses on your face otherwise you can easily lose them. If I had worn my glasses I would have lost them when I was hit with a big wave while leaving the beach. You don't have to wear shoes to the beach, but I think water shoes or flip flops are a good idea. And of course wear plenty of sun screen. Above all enjoy.

Did a 2 hour kayak that took in the caves, then out to sea where we saw loads of seals, birds, dolphins and had the pleasure of a turtle too which had not been seen in 2 years! Guide was great made it informative but fun tour, we got within touching distance of dolphins which made this trip the best

well this was my first kayak tour in the ocean and la jolla kayak made it so much fun and easy.. the ocean was green and water was so clear that we could look at the floor. we had a close look at a shoal of leopard sharks and sea lions posing for us on the shores.. the big waves swing us like a cradle.. would go for kayak trips soon..

These tours do not include entering of the "seven caves", but rather viewing them from 100 - 200 yards offshore. The advertising and pictures are misleading as they give the impression, at least to me, that we would actually enter the caves in our Kayaks. It borders on false advertising, particularly as our day was calm with minimal swells - so surf around the caves was a minimal risk. On the positive, the kayaking was pleasant, our guide (Emma) was excellent, and it was an enjoyable 90 minutes on the water.
