Mount Soledad separates La Jolla and Pacific Beach, and from the top of this mountain you have a gorgeous panoramic view of LJ, PB, Mission Bay and some of the canyons in the area. I would recommend to come here towards the end of your stay, because from up here I always found it fun to locate the places that I had been to, and to see them from above. The best time of day to come up here is close to sunset - you will have great lighting for taking pictures. To the north you will see La Jolla Shore Beach and Scripps Pier, to the south, Mission Bay and Pacific Beach. I really enjoy taking La Jolla Scenic Drive back down to PB - the road is really scenic, and you have a gorgeous view of the the beach about halfway down the mountain. If you are a cyclist, this is a favorite ride for many San Diego cyclists. I would recommend going up the steep side from La Jolla (Mount Soledad Road), and then taking LJ Scenic drive down - you get the best views this way, and you can brag about how hard core you are :-)

Great place to take out of town visitors, but that's about it. EZ to get to, then go down either side to Pacific Beach or La Jolla for the day...or do both! Nice place to drink your coffee as you plan your day.

It's really sad that people are actually fighting about whether or not to keep this structure as it is. On the one hand, Atheists (a religion, by the way), claim that by keeping the Cross, it favors Christianity above Atheism. However, removing it would do the same thing. It would favor Atheism above Christianity and other religions. Christians and non-Christians alike look at the Cross as an expression of comfort and remembrance for the loss of fallen heroes, for their loved ones. In my opinion, a true atheist would not be bothered by some painted cinderblocks, no matter what shape or symbol they were formed into. This is a fantastic site as it is. It's a beautiful memorial overlooking everything, the beach, hills, valley, and is worth visiting.

Enjoyed the drive and view. The veterans memorial surrounding the cross was an added feature. impressive display of men & women who served our country.
