Redwood Hollow - La Jolla Cottages
Ranked #2 of 4 La Jolla B&B and Inns
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed July 23, 2012

This was our third weekend getaway at Redwood Hollow, and I'm certain that it won't be our last. For our most recent stay, we were in the Wisteria cabin, surrounded by plants and flowers, fresh air, and the scent of the abundant star jasmine blooming outside our windows. Stress disappeared instantly! We love the quiet, relaxing ambience and the feeling of stepping back in time. We also love that so much is within easy walking distance: beaches, restaurants, shopping, museums. Customer service at Redwood Hollow is excellent with a sincere "we care" attitude. The cottage was well-supplied with all we needed for a comfortable stay, and it was a pleasure to cook in the kitchen and enjoy lazy meals on the patio. Not all is historic -- we had a fast WiFi connection whenever we wanted. There's so much we love about Redwood Hollow that it's hard to pick a favorite aspect! Hmmm. We'll have to go there again to figure it out...

This property makes you want to come home after a busy day at the beach. They thought of everything that you might need to make you feel comfortable. It is very close to the tide pools and Children's Beach which makes it very convenient. My granddaughter, daughter and I just loved it and can't wait to come back.

We booked the Wisteria cabin for May 18th thru the 20th (Fri- Sunday) for a quick weekend getaway. We arrived late Friday night and there was a welcome note left for us explaining everything about the cabin and the area around us. I liked the personalized touch. The cabin was idyllic and I wish I had another couple days to linger on and enjoy La Joya. It was a "no phones, no laptops" weekend for us but even so, the cabin is outfitted with a router we could tap into if we wanted to get on the internet.

There is a history and charm to this place which is lovingly preserved by the caretaker. This type of familiarity and charm cannot compare to a modern hotel. The owner actually happened to know my boyfriend's father when he stayed with them years before. It was like I stepped back in time and we enjoyed all the charming details the cabin and the surrounding gardens had to offer. From the front porch with Adirondack chairs to the original Gaffers & Sattler Stove in our cabin kitchen, to the cozy family room with a fireplace, books, magazines and throws for those chilly nights.

Saturday afternoon, I lingered on the back porch reading and listening to a water feature beyond the ivy. There is a resident cat that was lazily enjoying the sun on the back patio just below our cottage and looked up at me like I was disturbing his snooze. The birds were chirping and I could hear the ocean.

The kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed but found we didn't use it because we enjoyed walking down to Harry's for breakfast and other great eateries in the village. We spent a lot of time at the beach, which was just a short walk away.

We found everything in working order from the "historic" plumbing, to plenty of towels and kitchen items. Remember folks, this is an original cabin with original plumbing and electrical wiring. Staying in a historic cabin you have to go into this with an open mind and not be put off that this is not the same as staying at The Four Seasons. This is an experience in stepping back in time, living as people did back in the 1940's & 50's. I felt like I was in a Doris Day movie. It's kind of fun to think how far we have come with modern conveniences. Everything works just fine but just be mindful that you don't want to flush while someone else is in the shower.

I can't wait to return to Redwood Hollow. Please don't change a thing!

This is my second stay here, first time was for 4 days, this time for 8 days; peaceful, beautiful, convenient walking to town and the gorgeous La Jolla Coastal Walk. The cottages were clean and cute and cozy; the staff, very friendly, generous and helpful. Highly recommend! Next time I will stay for 2 weeks!

The cottages are in a peaceful, beautiful garden setting. The value is pretty good. We stayed in Sea Bright, a one bedroom cottage which accommodated all three of us pretty well. Nice basket of goodies awaits you when you get there. The Cottage was clean and big enough so we didn't feel crowded. It also had a nice size kitchen with an apartment size refrigerator, so buying milk and cereal won't be an issue. There's definitely a sense of history in this place. The manager was very nice and met all of our needs. We will definitely stay there again.

Tip: Walk to the beach as it's only 1 block away. Don't miss the back patio. Skip parking in the property as it's a bit narrow, there's plenty of street parking.

We spent two nights in a large 2 bedroom cottage, and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The cottages are located very near the beach, and near the center of La Jolla, but not so close to either that there was any noise at night. Very happy with our stay, and would certainly recommend it to anyone, especially for a longer stay.

My colleagues and I stayed at Redwood cottages in September 2011 while attending a conference in San Diego. The cottage was perfect for the three of us, including a pull-out bed in our one bedroom cottage. Our days were spent enjoying the beach and village. We especiallly enjoyed sitting outside drinking wine by the fireplace on the cool evenings. The cottage is a short walk to the beach and the village shops and restaurants. We didn't move our car until our last day when we hiked at the Torrey Pines state natural reserve--highly recommend this hike as the views are spectactular. The grocery store was a trek so recommend picking up food before you check in or driving to the grocery store. The plants and flowers surrounding the cottages were beautiful. We kept our windows open at night and could hear the crashing waves of the Pacific and smelled the fragant flowers outside our windows. We will be back on our next trip to southern California.
