La Jolla Sea Cave Kayaks

Recommended length of visit: 2-3 hours
Owner description: Enjoying San Diego's perfect climate means adopting a beach life-style and exploring the magnificent Pacific Ocean Coast. There's no better way to do it than in a kayak! In a single tour you will experience southern California's surf culture, observe several species of marine animals, and visit 4 different marine environments: sandy beach, rocky coast, kelp forest, and open ocean - each with it's unique characteristics and wildlife viewing opportunities. Come see the Sea Lions, Leopard Sharks, Pelicans, Cormorants... and of course, the Caves! While our ultimate destination is the magnificent sea caves that the ocean has carved from ancient cliffs, the true beauty of the area is all around the caves. Please don't have your heart set on entering the caves as this is not always safe to do. Instead, open your eyes to the details around you and you will never be disappointed! We use stable sit-on-top kayaks that are very user friendly.

My wife, son, and I had a knowledgeable, organized experience with our guides Lucho and John showed us how to successfully navigate the surf out and back as well keeping our group focused.
Thanks guys!!

Whole family did this trip in two tandems. Good initial instruction, modern equipment and really nice people on and off the water. We saw the coves, sharks, million dollar homes and sea lions and seals. We were encouraged to have fun and treated as individuals. Very enjoyable.

We took the entire family (must be six years of age or more); and it was a very memorable time. The sea caves are definitely something to visit if you have not been there prior.

Dan's Top-5 La Jolla Kayaking Tips:
1. Bring a disposable waterproof camera - buy it ahead of time unless you want to pay over $20 for the unit at the registration office.
2. Try and schedule for mid-day - it is warmer then and YOU WILL GET WET.
3. When booking for any Kayak tour - make sure you get in with a tour that has less than 5-6 groups. If you go with any more, the groups end up being too big for the guides to manage and some people who may be stragglers will not only be way behind the main group, but will not hear any of the stories, tips, or observations given by the guide.
4. Bring a change of clothes - even in sunny San Diego the water can get a little cool and nothing will feel better after your excursion than changing into dry clothes.
5. Take something for motion sickness an hour before if you are prone to sea sickness - when we were moving and actively rowing it did not seem bad, but some in our group where negatively affected when we were stationary with the undulating wave patterns. If you start to feel sick - try to concentrate on the horizon.

** Bonus Tip ** If you are making this tour to view the Leopard Sharks - make sure you are going at the correct time of year when they are in the shallows - check with the tours before you set out to avoid disappointment.

Safe Travels!

We're locals but decided to give this a try. It was really fun. Tour guides were helpful, knowledgable, and kept everyone together. Going thru the surf was a bit hairy but we all made it. Kayaks were very stable and in good condition. Paddling to the caves was a bit strenuous. Getting up close and personal with seals, dolphins, birds, etc was a lot of fun. Coming back thru the surf was fun, even though we took a spill. Great times!

We kayaked to the sea caves last August. The outfitters were great. Very helpful, informative, and personable. We kayaked to the caves with a large group that day, but our guide handled the crowd very well. It was fun going in the cave and even more fun kayak-surfing back into the beach. We saw many sea lions swimming next to our kayak, sea birds on the cliffs and fish in the water. After kayaking, we hiked the cliffs over the caves from LaJolla Shores to LaJolla Cove. That was almost better than the kayaking. The whole LaJolla area is beautiful and fascinating. This summer I want to go back and snorkel to the caves.
