“NOT WORTH THE MONEY”
Reviewed July 10, 2010

I had to stay in this hotel for a wedding that was taking place. If it was not for that, I would have never picked this hotel. Interesting fact - the hotel used to be horse barns.

Pros: Nice landscaping, rooms and bathrooms are big, clean, nice furniture, across from UCSD, near Scripps Institute and Torrey Pines preservation.

Cons: extremely overpriced - we paid over $600 for two nights (and that was with a wedding party discount), they charge for everything - parking space itself, valet parking (you have no choice), the food is ridiculously priced and the menu is not designed for children, there were no microwaves or fridges in the rooms, there is no view, and the hotel is located at least a half hour from anything interesting in San Diego.

We booked Estancia on Hotwire and for the price we paid, we were ecstatic! Our ground floor room was extremely dark, but comfortable enough with nice amenities. The grounds are beautiful, the valets are friendly, and the pool and fitness center were great. We did struggle with the service at El Adobe which was somewhat inattentive in the morning, but enjoyed the food a lot. The hotel isn't that close to restaurants, etc. and requires driving to downtown la jolla.

The resort fee is a good deal in my opinion b/c it covers internet and use of the pool and fitness center, and in high end hotels, I often pay upwards of $25 for these "extras". I'd definitely return to the Estancia.

We just came back from a 3-night stay at the hotel, and the experience overall was very pleasant.

Room: We had a suite, so it was nice and very spacious. However, try not to get a ground floor if you like it nice and bright. The place was spotless. Very good housekeeping.

Restaurant: El Abode was great. On the weekends, they offer a breakfast buffet for $24/person which I thought was a good value. It was a nice spread, though not enormous like its sister property Terranea. Service was good.
The food at Mustangs was not bad, but not exceptional. Service was good most of the time. They forgot to offer the children's menu during our first visit, so we didn't even know until the next visit.
Room service was really really really slooooow one time, but lighning fast another. Excellent cookies -- nice and warm and gooey.

Pool/Jacuzzi/Spa: Salt water pool was great. Jacuzzi was very crowded so I didn't go in. Spa was small, but nice. I did not get a massage so can't comment on the service.

Parking: $25/day. Yes, $25/day. Was not justifiable.

Grounds: Beautiful, but too many weddings which prevented us from really enjoying the grounds.

Location: Near downtown La Jolla, but not within walking distance (well, not for me, at least). It's adjacent to the Salk Institute, across the street from UCSD, and near the Aquarium, which is great.

Valet: Pretty fast, and nice.

Problems: We found some hat pins in the grass area which we believe came from the wedding. I'd suggest that you NOT let your little ones (or big ones) go barefoot.

Overall, I'd return if we can get a good rate and if there are no weddings or big parties.

My husband and 2 children (2yr and 2mos) decided to return to this resort for a relaxing weekend. The grounds of this resort are just beautiful. The resort style with it's manicured grounds are very impressive. However, the service does not give the resort justice. We found many descreptancies that game me doubt whether I would return to stay here again. For example, very cold check-in experience, no turndown service, no stocked minibar, very poor in-room service experience on three occasions (first they delivered warm beer, then they did not picked up our food tray until the next day, then they did not set up our table and rushed out the door), housekeeping did not clean up or re-stocked the coffee tray in the room.

On the positive side, pool service was great and had two very good experiences at Mustangs and Burros (great night time atmosphere).

My my husband and I stayed there on our honeymoon night. When we arrived to our room, there were rose petals on the bed and a fresh scent in the room. Everything about our room was spectacular. We had a cute little balcony with a wonderful view of the immaculate grounds. My husband who doesn't really pay attention to details absolutely LOVED this place!

I definitely recommend this hotel for fun or romance.

We had a wonderful time at Estancia as a family of four with two daughters, ages 6 and 9. The grounds are stunning, the pool area is well-maintained and the daily breakfast buffet was a favorite with our girls. The staff was always very friendly to the kids and seemed to take it all in stride. However, because there are less children in general here than at a "splash" resort , we definitely felt more pressure to ask our kids not to, for example, scream and yell by the pool and mind their manners in other parts of the hotel. I remember they were playing a quiet game of hide and seek one evening as we waited for a seat at the outdoor restaurant and were asked to stay on the walk areas of the grounds. A perfectly legitimate request but if you want your kids to be able to work off some "kid steam" and roam a little more freely, I'd say choose somewhere more geared for them and less relaxing for the grown-ups. Also, the pool was a bit on the cold side!

This is a lovely place, and we particularly enjoyed the expansive garden grounds, fountains, and the pool! Food was excellent at "Mustangs" with live music and a great atmosphere.

The limitations of this hotel might also be its benefits: it is out of the way of most things in San Diego, and even in La Jolla. It is rather hidden away, and you will drive to get anywhere. There aren't a lot of shops or restaurants on site, and you are not near the beach. But this makes it a great, quiet, garden escape or business meeting site.

Enjoy!
