This is a special hotel that I hope never changes. We are SD locals and stayed overnite w our kids & dog (yes they take dogs w gifts for the dogs!!). I made a mistake w booking the cabana but the manager, Cesar, came over and smoothed things out. He comp'ed us w drinks and food at pool side. He and his staff were so accommodating.

We then proceeded to enjoy the amazingly warm salt water pool. The kids (11 &13) loved the experience and we will be back.

I've also hosted conferences here from UC San Diego Health and business meetings. This place is super professional and out of towners are very impressed.

Why stay at cookie cutter hotel when you have Estancia in your back yard. Sooooo special hotel w crazy character.

Our family experience was tainted by their terrible service. Not helpful front desk staff. Waited 40 minutes for 2 glasses of milk for a child. Followed by the restaurant acting like they were doing us a favor by serving us breakfast. Overall I was not pleased with the place. They also over charge for their self-park. Might as well park valet. It's $5 additional. Unfriendly staff. I will not stay there again. Would rather airbnb it somewhere else.

We booked a week at Estancia La Jolla expecting excellence from the Meritage group, what we got was about an Average experience. Here's the break down:

We received what we thought was a great rate at $216/night, what we didn't realize was that there were several stacked fees that you shouldn't expect to be able to avoid. When booking, be sure you factor in (as broken down by the front desk):

Parking Fees: + $25 per night
Hospitality Fee: + $25 per night
Taxes: + $192
Fees: + $198

Over 7 nights, that's an astounding +$105 per night for $321 per night. You can get a terrific Airbnb spot for that much. If you want to pinch, see my image for recommended free parking that can be available during the day.

The pool area is average, rectangular with 5' to 3.5' depth range, pre-cast pavers. Again, expectations were a bit higher given it's a Meritage Group resort. "Dated" is probably an appropriate designation.

The interior design is generic; flat ceilings, hotel style carpet, tub/shower combo, a lot of missed opportunities to match the fantastic Mission exterior.

The room, and front desk service is great so far. It's a well-managed facility.

The location is wonderful. Kahn's Salk Institute is next-door and Geisel Library is a short walk, while great, next-level trails and beaches are a hike away.

Overall, the Average designation is about right. I would definitely weigh your options with Airbnb to scavenge better locations and get that straightforward pricing you miss at Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa.

Room tip: Rooms with views are priced accordingly. Think parking and pool location if you want an edge over similarly priced rooms.

James, thank you very much for your continued business as a repeat guest of the Meritage Collection. We sincerely appreciate your loyalty. As you may know from your stays at other Meritage Collection properties, the parking, resort fee and taxes are standard nightly costs. We regret that you were not informed of these costs in advance. We make every effort to make guests aware prior to arrival to avoid any surprises; the charges are outlined on our website, at the time of booking, and in confirmation and pre-arrival emails. We are pleased that you enjoyed the other aspects of your stay, and found our customer service and location to be wonderful. We feel these characteristics set us apart as the premier accommodations option in the Torrey Pines/La Jolla area and hope you will stay with us again the next time you visit the region.

My husband and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary here. The service staff were all so attentive especially the wonderful welcome by the valets. We did have to wait a bit to register but once registered we enjoyed the ambiance--old Spanish. It is a beautiful setting.

We had some delicious massages that left us as limp as noodles. The relaxation room was that, but it got very busy with so many people receiving services. I also had some facial services and it was prompt and efficient.

The food at Mustang and Burros was good and sitting in the patio listening to Spanish Guitar was way over the top--thoroughly enjoyable evening. Wish I lived closer -- would do regularly.

Our room was beautiful and the bed very comfortable. Sleep was delicious and awoke refreshed. Beautiful bathroom and well equipped with Q-tips, cotton balls, lotions, hair dryer etc. They provide you with a bottle of wine too!! Nice.
