Estancia is a big compound just across the street from the main entrance of the University of California San Diego, very convenient if you have business at UCSD. It often hosts conventions and meetings, but it also has a spa--which I confess I did not have enough time to take advantage of it. I used the gym (average equipment, small for such a big hotel) and the pool (good). Everything around the hotel is just fine, without neither infamy nor glory. The rooms are nice, the decor very predictable, the accessories standard. I had a nice third floor room with a balcony, in a secluded part of the compound.
Once you are at Estancia, you are a bit stranded. There is an average Mexican restaurant onsite, and a cafeteria. The hotel is close to a great (steep) path leading down the bluffs to the beach, and also quite close to the Salk Institute (for architecture buffs).More
