In this age of overpriced megaloposis conglomerate hotels, it is nice to stay in- what at least appears to be an independent gem. Estancia is stunningly gorgeous. There are long corridors of spanish pavers with agave, bougainvillea, palms at every turn- the gardeners make this place! Rooms are great. Pool is perfection. I would fly here for a long weekend instead of mexico or hawaii. The only negatives are that the service was not up to par. Very nice folks but just not the level expected- but maybe that is the trade off for such a great value. Value added everywhere you turn- from free margaritas to free wifi to bubbly in the lobby. Well done Estancia!

I was staying only one night since I was in town to take an exam and this was the closest location - the grounds are beautiful, staff helpful and efficient and the rooms tastefully decorated - I thought I might like to return with my family for a weekend getaway in the future.
Since I wanted to study, I chose the room service option. Service was quick and polite although the 22% service charge plus $2 delivery charge was a little steep. Wanting a light supper, I ordered the "petit caesar salad": at $14 for 4 lettuce leaves and a VERY ordinary mayonnaise (billed as a home made caesar dressing but tasting like tired store bought mayonnaise with no hint of parmesan) with stale bread on the side was disappointing beyond belief. Breakfast was little better - no tea in the room, only coffee, so I ordered the continental breakfast - very nasty orange juice and a teeny weeny pot with no refill of hot water - such a shame and really not in keeping with the rest of the hotel.

We stayed at the Estancia during high season - it was a very good value. The property grounds are pristine and the staff was outstanding. The rooms were simple but well kept.

The only drawback is the need to get in the car to do anything off property; however the property is in a central location.

We will definately visit here again!

My team held a group business event in San Diego this past week and I had them stay at the Estancia hotel. We did a dinner at two of their restaurants and both were very well received by the group of 20 or so who stayed.

The staff was welcoming and provided prompt, efficient check-in service The best part was the fresh fruit drinks and champagne to keep our heels cool while checking in. Great touch!

I was given a comfortable, quiet room where I could work and enjoy the excellent in-room high-end coffee. The A/C was not working properly in 328, so it seem a bit stuffy despite blowing all night. (Perhaps it was on fan and not A/C).

The group had a dinner in the Bodego and the Library on 2 successive nights. I have to say, the service was absolutely outstanding and the food (seafood, pork tenderloin, vegetarian pasta, or filet) was terrific for a group serving. The risotto with lobster appetizer was killer. Wow.

This is a place to return to. Great accommodations, service, bar, and food. What more could you want to impress a group from out-of-town on how wonderful San Diego resorts can be.

Can't wait to come back!

We stayed at the Estancia La Jolla for Easter with our in-laws. The weather was a little cool so we did not get to enjoy the pool but it looks enticing. The property is immaculate and the food was very good. We enjoyed to complementary drinks and would return as with AAA it was a great deal.

The receptionist informs me that hotel was built in 2008. (I doubt that) The the groundskeeping crew do a fantastic job maintaining the grounds. Which are impressive. However, the housekeeping could do a better job. I found peanuts shells near the bed against the baseboard of the wall. Simple amenities and decor work well for a person traveling through and staying on business.
However, I would not recommend this place for a romantic getaway. The room lack an intimate charm and the hotel lacks a defining theme and/or purpose. Beautiful landscaping creates a great place to walk and/or enjoy a drink or dinner.
The service is average. Nothing exceptional, yet I found nothing to criticize other than the housekeeping.

Room Tip: The third floor is also considered the ground floor. I suggest the third floor which is also the top...

The hotel is gorgeous, with beautiful gardens, very nice room with private patio or terraces, and a great swimming pool. The breakfast buffet is quite high quality. Our stay would have been perfect, had it not been for a couple of "small" problems. I believe the hotel does a lot of business with big groups (wedding or business events), which can come a bit in the way if you want some piece and quiet (like the business breakfast they had on the lawn just in front of our rooms with about 50 people). The service at the restaurant the first night (Saturday) and the first breakfast (Sunday brunch) was disastrous, very slow and we did not feel welcome at all. It must have been a week-end thing because the service greatly improved the rest of our stay.
