We drove from San Diego in order to visit the modern art museum, but never made it as we parked on the seafront and spent the next three hours watching the seals and the birds and the surf and surfers. For some reason, whenever seals appear they have a power to attract crowds and it seemed more pleasant to pass the time outdoors in the sun watching their antics and those of the pelicans and other big birds, rather than being indoors in the gallery.
For info, on-road parking in La Jolla is free but time-restricted, with different limits in different parts of town. Along the beachfront seems to have the longest time, allowing a three hour stay, and when we arrived around 10:00 on a weekday there were still spaces, but they filled soon afterwards. If you need to stay longer there are multi-storey parking lots in town
