Owner description: San Diego's most desirable spot for swimming, diving and snorkeling. The water is calm and the cove is ecologically protected. There is also a world famous dive site that is located in the La Jolla ecological preserve.

“Loved this area!!!!”

La Jolla cove is lovely. The swimming area is awesome! Don't forget to bring or rent some snorkeling equipment. Our children enjoyed walking thru the small cave here. The surf is calmer than on regular beaches so you can see clearly thru the water and enjoy all the treasures there. And to top it all off, the sea lions are on the rocks close by which provided quite the entertainment! We traveled up and down the coast from LA to San Diego and this was our favorite spot.

“Sea lions!”
Reviewed June 12, 2013

Great beach walk with a varied landscape and dozens upon dozens of sea lions and birds. Kids will really enjoy stopping here. Watch out: sea lions are smelly! :)

“Gorgeous cliffs and coves with lots of sea life”
Reviewed June 11, 2013

This area of Southern California is breathtaking. It's very cliffy with little beach coves where you can take stairways down to the beach. This area is full of Sea Lions, Seals, various birds and small sharks. Lots to sea out in the water either scuba diving, snorkeling or kayaking. Stunning sunsets from the decks of the many cafes and restaurants in the area.

“Swimming with Sea Lions”
Reviewed June 11, 2013

Wow. First of all, make sure to either bring a wetsuit or deal with chilly water until you warm up from swimming. Other than that, the experience is phenomenal. If you want to see fish, it is okay, but the real gems are the sea lions. If you go around midday to afternoon (11-5) you will encounter them at their most active. They love to get in the water and be with people. They won't let you touch, but many of them are more than happy to let people swim with them. The babies like to play, but their mothers usually won't let them get near people. I cannot think of a real negative to this place. The bathrooms and changing rooms are dingy, but as clean as you could reasonably expect from beachside public facilities. There is no entry fee, but expect to pay for parking as the free spaces fill up fast.
I wholeheartedly recommend going. It is just a short drive from San Diego, and is one of the best experiences you can ever have. If you've ever wished to swim with the sea lions in the zoo or aquarium, this is your chance to do it in their natural habitat.
