Stayed at this hotel for 2 nights, first the staff was friendly, the food was excellent, and the rooms were nice.

I stayed at room 130, on the first floor, over looking the beach and park, beautiful room remodeled with a 36(?) inch tv. Bathrooms were clean and look pleasing. closeness to the beach is unbeatable. Fun experience and I enjoyed my stay.

Cons
The walls are VERY THIN! It becomes somewhat of a problem, and the pool is loud during the afternoon so you cant get a nap.

I'll be brief since others have previously done a good job of describing the hotel. The people were very nice and the service was very competent. The location is obviously an excellent one being right on the beach/ocean. There is a large community park next door as well (north side of the hotel). The restaurant is nicely done and the food was very good. Hard to argue with a nice lunch overlooking the ocean anytime. The pool was popular and seemed to be clean, with enough chairs.
The hotel itself however is definitely in need of freshening up. The rooms are fine but could use updating. The room patios are nice for relaxing, entertaining and so forth. The hallways have bumpy tile floors that make a lot of racket when suitcases or housekeeping carts are rolled over them. The colors are too terra cotta, south of the border-ish and should be toned down a bit.
Overall, if you will be spending most of your time out and about enjoying the ocean, the golf, or other activities in the San Diego region, then this is a very nice spot to stay. It is not a luxury hotel however, so if the hotel itself has to be top-notch for whatever reason, then you should consider other places.

We stayed at the La Jolla Shores hotel for 3 nights in late April. The location is fantastic -- the hotel is situated right on the beach and our ocean view room was directly on the beach with a beautiful view of La Jolla and the ocean. We woke up every morning to dolphins swimming along the coast and some very friend seagulls. There is a cute street of with a grocery store, kayak and surf shops and great selection of restaurants (Osteria Romantica is fabulous, a great take-out Mexican place with good lobster tacos, and a super cute breakfast place that might be called The kitchen - located in a little courtyard off the main street leading up to the hotel.) Very easy drive to downtown La Jolla and Children's Beach where we saw little seal pups resting on the sand. Also a Starbucks was located 3 blocks from the hotel which was very convenient.

The hotel premises are very pretty but the rooms themselves were badly in need of renovation. It looked like the ocean view rooms along our floor were all in the process of being renovated while we were there -- they look to be tearing out everything from the rooms, wallpaper, carpet, all furniture, and replacing everything. Too bad ours wasn't renovated = everything was outdated and old and smelled musty and humid. But overall, the quiet location and waking up to dolphins made it worth the money.

My boyfriend and I stayed here for one night as a precursor to staying at the Del Coronado for my birthday weekend. Let's just say, we were pretty disappointed, especially since the reviews on tripadvisor.com were overwhelmingly positive. One of the main complaints was that we had to walk through an area of swarming little flies every time we wanted to go to our room. In fact, these patches of gnats were all over the hotel (it may have had to do with the hotel's placement of dumpsters or something- I don't know), and it was not at all pleasant. Another place the swarming bugs were prevalent was on the not-so close and not-so luxurious beach that the hotel backs up onto. The hotel claims to be "just a few yards" from the beach when that is a bit of an exaggeration. Aside from that, the beach is disgusting- not at all one I would want to lie on or stroll on or spend time on (and trust me, we tried). Large sewers leak onto the beach and make it dirty and smelly and attract more of those flies that I was talking about. Furthermore, the bathtub in our room filled up with water while taking a shower and refused to drain in time for another shower the next morning. We called the front desk and they said they'd send up a maintenance man, but an hour later, still no help. By then, it was time to check out, and thus we had to go without our morning showers. All in all, the La Jolla Shores Hotel left something to be desired.

Spent three nights here with my wife and two boys ages 9 and 7. Very nice hotel and special off season rate was a bargain. Great location -- you can walk to many stores and restaurants, and the kayak tour places.

No complaints.

My husband was sent here for a work course for 5 days and i got to tag along for a mini vacation! This hotel was almost perfect! it is right on the beach, it has a bar, an excellent restaurant and the staff was very friendly. we managed to get a bed & breakfast special, which means we got to have breakfast buffet every morning in the restaurant over looking the beautiful coastline.
happy hour was between 4-7 and the menu was very good.
maid service was great, the beds were very comfortable and the bathrobes were very soft. free WIFI was nice as well. the only thing we would have to complain about is the fact that there is no music playing in the bar, restaurant or in the lobby so it lacks a bit of atmosphere. also, everything closes at 10pm, including the pool area and the bar, so our only other options were to get some beers and hang out on our balcony, or go into La Jolla village which is not walking distance it's a 40 minute walk or a $7-10 cab ride. the hotel used to have a different name, so none of the cabbies knew how to get there, so give details about the place. (red roof)
during the day there is so much to do, i went for walks along the beach, i sunbathed, walked to La Jolla cove to see the sea lions, shopped in the village, swam in the pool, walked along the pier... i had a great vacation while my husband was stuck in his course all day long...he was pretty jealous.
the San Diego Zoo was a 20 minute car ride so that is worth checking out, i recommend going in the morning when all the animals are out and about. Also, for more shopping there is Westfield Mall at University Town Centre. it's a great outdoor mall with all the best stores.

Perfect Spring Break for the little kids. Mine are 6 and 10. Very nice pool and hot spa and the beach was clean with gentle waves. Water was sort of cold (in the ocean) so we bought wet suits but the kids didn't use them much. The pool is heated and the hot tub is a great place for mom and dad while the kids swim. Nice sized rooms with a fridge and coffee pot. Would have appreciated a microwave but I think some of the pricier rooms have them. We had a coast view which was actually right over the pool, but you could see the ocean from there. Staff were very nice. Parking on the street was always available so we avoided the $14/night fee. Good food (especially with kids) was within walking distance and next door was a park with firepits and a play ground. We never ate at the hotel restaurant as other guests said the service was too slow for the kids. We would go back in a heartbeat! Great place!

  • Liked — Location on beach, nice pool and spa. Free internet access.
