Stayed in one of the spacious kitchenette rooms, which was convenient since we have a 5 month old. Although the room was very clean and nicely furnished, you could tell you were in a 100 year old building. It was a bit dank, but understandable since location is right by the ocean. Access to these rooms is via the sidewalk, which was unexpected.

The staff was great except for one doorman who was derelict as I was trying to exit the hotel pushing a stroller. The restaurant breakfast was horrible, grocery store pastries would have been better.

We booked this hotel based on recommendations on Trip Advisor. I was attending a medical conference at the Hotel del Coronado and we had a few days to R&R before the conference started. From the moment we were greeted by the bellman until we checked out, we were treated courteously and promptly. There is one small, slow elevator in the building, which we knew about from previous write ups but we took the stairs except once or twice when we wanted to experience the antiquity of the elevator. If you are expecting speedy, multiple elevators and have an aversion to walking up and down stairs, this place may not be for you. We stayed on the 5th floor (room 506) I believe, which gave us a view down the hill towards the ocean. The rooms were small but beautifully decorated. We used the valet parking, which tagged on another $22/night to our stay but there is an option to park on the street although it is VERY limited. Having the security of the valet parking was worth the price of a couple of drinks.
Unfortunately it was on the cool, cloudy side most of the time we were there, but the nice thing is that the pool was surrounded by plexiglass which kept the constant wind away. Although the maximum temperature when we were there was 68 degrees, when we were sunning down by the pool out of the wind, I actually was quite warm.
There are plenty of dining options and happy hour specials withing walking distance as well as some great shopping. Don't miss walking down by the beach and getting some pictures of the seals and sunset.
If we get back to the La Jolla area, we will definitely stay here again!

Attended wedding in La Jolla in April and stayed in a suite at the Little Holel by-the Sea, a part the Grande Colonial. Ocean view, one block from the Childrens Pool beach, with rooftop deck for extra room to entertain the clan. Valets, front desk, housekeeping, etc. are all excellent.

From the outside, The Grande Colonial Hotel beckons in an old-school kind of way; it looks stately and sophisticated, with dressed up doormen waiting to swoosh you through the main doors. Thankfully, the hotel does not disappoint. The Colonial understands service the way the best hotels in the world get it; you have to pay, but anything is possible. Lunch by the pool? Done. Cocktails in the garden? No problem. Not the cheapest experience, but well worth it.
The rooms are very nice; I would recommend upgrading to a view of the ocean for the blissful sunsets. Rooms aren't wildly opulent, but understated in a classy and well-appointed way, and the thread count on the beds is perfect.
Location is right in town, so you can walk everywhere; we especially loved the bustling rooftop restaurant/bar at George's. The restaurant in the hotel is also very nice, if not a bit stuffy; they did create a really great vegetarian dinner for me which gains them high points in my book.
All in all we had nothing bad to say about the hotel, but if you are on a tight budget, it might not be the place for you.

Dear Martiniclub:
First let me thank you for the very favorable review you posted about your recent visit to our hotel. I am delighted to hear how much you enjoyed your stay and, from the sound of it, you certainly took advantage of all that we have to offer, as well as that of the surrounding neighborhood. But what really stood out for me was your great use of adjectives in describing us. Loved, loved the “stately and sophisticated”, “blissful sunsets” and “understated in a classy and well-appointed way”. Honestly, you’re spot-on and I couldn’t have written it better. Thanks again. I hope you’ll look us up during your next trip to La Jolla!

We just got back from staying here April 7 through April 12. Right from the second you walk into this Hotel the first thing you will notice is how friendly everyone is. Special shout out to the door men, you guy's were awesome. Everyday the car was brought to us in what seemed like seconds. We were always asked if we needed directions or advise on places to see. They always held the door for my wife, asked us how we were doing, were always told to have a great day and upon our return were always asked how our day was. You guy's truly are the embassadors for this Hotel, AWESOME guy's keep it up. The girls at the front desk were very polite, helpful and always smiling. Everyone who works at this hotel was outstanding and made you truly feel at home like family and that is so rare. Our room was amazing. Clean, fresh, bright and the bed was awesome, also very rare for a hotel. Our room was cleaned spotless everyday and there was always water, pop and snacks left in the fridge and when you came back to your room at night the bed was always turned down with chocolates left by the pillows. I can't say enough about this hotel, the rooms are awesome, the people are awesome, the location is awesome. I would recommend this hotel to anyone and the sadist part of the whole trip, was leaving. Congrats Grande Colonial and all who work there, I can't wait to see you again one day.

My husband and I (and, of course, our 9 year old son) are native northern Californians. Our expectations, therefore, for southern California were not high, but we really loved it in La Jolla. People were friendly and it was beautiful and relaxing. The food everywhere we ate (except the San Diego Wild Animal Park) was great (especially Whisk & Ladle near the Grand Colonial in La Jolla!)

The Grand Colonial itself was a wonderful experience. The service was flawless. Our room was serviced 2x each day in a completely unobtrusive manner with perfect attention to detail. At one point I needed help with a business fax and the front desk took great care of me.

We stayed in the Little Hotel in a junior suite with a small kitchen. It was homey with hardwood floors and a nicely tiled bathroom. Even though we didn't eat any of the complementary snacks but we really appreciated it that they were there because it made us feel taken care of and at home. We will be back!

We were headed to San Diego and opted to stay in La Jolla and were glad we did. From the moment we pulled up to the Hotel and until the minute we left this hotel lived up to the hype. We love historic hotels and the Grande was perfect for us. Doormen were great, check in smooth, lobby is small and understated and that was fine. We reserved a partial ocean view and got the room on the NW corner top floor. It was really spacious, and we were very happy when we walked in.

It couldn't be in a more convenient location for being in La Jolla, and the property was perfectly maintained. We ordered room service one night for dinner, it was great and reasonable priced.

The best kept secret about this place is that there is a sunroom/library down at the suites building that has a nice table and flat screen in the sun room, and couple loungers on the deck. It overlooks the coves and is a great place to chill.

We loved this place and will be back next time we are in the area.....

Room Tip: Partial ocean view 5th floor NW corner......
