Owner description: The Cave Store offers a variety of merchandise including handmade jewelry, towels, snorkel gear, postcards, magnets, shells, and bottled drinks and ice cream. The most exciting part of the Cave Store, however, is the 145 step tunnel that leads to the Sunny Jim Sea Cave. Although there are rarely any sea lions or seals in the cave, the view is spectacular and it is a great adventure, particularly for kids. Summer months (May through September) we offer snorkel gear rentals. $20 for 2 hours for the mask, snorkel, and fins. $10 for 2 hours for just the mask and snorkel or just the fins. We will hold onto an ID as a deposit. Unfortunately, no wet suits or life jackets are available.

“Worth the $4 and 30 minutes”

A great little time killer to get a really cool perspective looking out from a sea cave towards the ocean. 145 steps, but not too difficult to handle in either direction (I'm 6'4" and did need to duck occasionally, but no real issues). Great photo opp. Not much to the store, but the kids really thought the Sunny Jim Cave trip was worthwhile! Also be sure to spend some time walking above the cave (behind the store) for some great views of the coasts, the other sea caves of La Jolla, seals and fish!

“Yes pitiful but a sea cave without getting wet”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 31, 2013

The shop is sad. The upkeep on the stairs pitiful. One would hope for safer stairs for $4 each and a peek at a sea cave. Be prepared no bathrooms available, 145 stairs and quite a stench.

“Pretty pitiful”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 7, 2013

Ok, the charge is only $4.00 per person, so right there, you shouldn,t expect much, and you don't get much. A bunch of stairs, lead to an opening where there are a bunch of boulders, and you can see waves. Sorry, but my wife and I were not impressed. It was supposed to open at 10:00am, but only opened at 11:00am.

“A Real Cave”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 10, 2013

The La Jolla Cave and Shell Shop is a really neat little store with a lot of handmade items for sale. Plus they also have a real sea cave. There is a small per-person fee, but is defiantly something to see. Caution: The climb down and then back up what seemed like a thousand, but is realistically more like one hundred stairs is rough!!! Especially if you are not in great shape. Even though the stairs were killer, I was really glad I pushed myself to complete the "journey", even though my thighs were sore for two days. At the bottom of the stairs you get to an opening to the Pacific Ocean. It's a great place to take a picture and to just gaze at the beautiful scenery.

“A bit overrated, but if you are there (and have good balance) then you might as well go.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 10, 2012

My fiancee and I came across this while in La Jolla on holiday in January 2012. It cost us about $5 each I believe, but not really worth the price ($10 in total for about 5 minutes of viewing). Within the shell store, you go down an extremely steep, dark, and narrow cave, with stairs that are uneven - so unless you are fit and very balanced and steady on your feet, I would recommend against this attraction. It takes about 5 mins to get down. Once you are at the bottom, it's a small viewing point and if there are other people there, it's a bit tight (it's especially tight going up and down the stairs). Anyway, i've posted some photos that I took. Oh, and I heard some strange noises in a corner (squeakies noises) so I took a flash photo and it was a giant pile of rats or mice or something!!! I was freaking out. I would skip this one on our next trip, but the photo looks nice. (ps the shop is overpriced too and the jewlery looks cheap).
