Owner description: It was supposed to be a children's pool, but the harbor seals took over and it's a main tourist and local attraction. Great picture spot.

There are tons of seals here in the morning and the scenery is lovely. The beach is protected, but not the best for swimming, as we were warned that the bacteria levels are high and we didn't want to disturb the seals.

Definitely walk along the sea wall and enjoy the views, but please give the seals some space!

The children's pool is just breath taking. I remember when you could actually swim here before the seals moved in, but having the seals here makes it all the more unique. Anytime we have out of towne guests we make sure to bring them to The Children's Pool.

Other reviewers have said they enjoyed visiting the Children's Pool but the odor was horrible. That is because of the design of this beach. Unlike most beaches, this beach has a wall that prevents surges of water that "flush out" the area. There are signs posted by the county health department at the entrance of this beach warning visitors that contact with the water at this beach can cause serious illness. This is a fact, not an opinion. The bacteria level at this beach was tested and found to exceed health standards. The plan for this beach was to create a place for children to swim but the design created a perfect place for seals and sea lions to get their much needed rest. As a result, this beach has known by many as the place to see seals. It only makes sense that there would be a high level of bacteria. It is only natural that this would be the case. A review is based on one's opinion and while some may not agree with my opinion, my personal opinion would be to go here and enjoy the seals from a safe distance. There is no need to go onto the beach. In fact, if you stay off of the beach you have a better chance of viewing them, it makes perfect sense. There are plenty of other larger beautiful beaches in La Jolla where you and your family can swim safely. As for this beach, in my opinion, it use to be an amazing place for viewing wildlife. Hopefully someday it will return to the way it was.

I just cant get past that this was donated for the benefit of the children of San Diego and all of the confusion regarding the seals having a place to lay themselves down takes away from that original purpose. Let the seals eat cake!!!!
