Owner description: It was supposed to be a children's pool, but the harbor seals took over and it's a main tourist and local attraction. Great picture spot.

“Seal Beach....worth the trip”
Reviewed August 18, 2011

Went to the seal beach aka Casa Beach, Children Pool in La Jolla. We did see a few seals bobbing thier heads in the water and also saw a few sunbathing on a rock 1/2 block from the beach. Unfortunately we got to the beach at 2 pm and the actual beach was empty of seals. A "local" informed us that the best time to see the seal is before 11 am. I guess we missed 90+ seals and a few dolphins that were hanging out earlier in the day. Kids still enjoyed the area it was beautiful. I would reccomend making this an early start to your day!

“A hassle to get to and to exit, no parking, difficult to access, no seals on beach”
Reviewed August 15, 2011

Big time hassle to get to la jolla as there is one way in and one way out from the highway and it is very trafficky on weekends. Impossible to park, hard to even maneuver around the area. The day we went there we drove around for half an hour to find a parking spot and had to park up a steep hill over 10 blocks away. When we finally did get to the beach there were NO seals on it. This may have been a better attraction awhile back but not anymore. Plus it took over an hour to get out la jolla back to the highway. Next time we will use our time to go to the zoo or sea world where access and parking is better set up. With the limited access it felt downright dangerous in case anybody needed to get emergency vehicles to the area.

“Upclose view of wild seals”
Reviewed July 28, 2011

This had to be one of my favorite things I did in San Diego. It is so worth going to see. Luckily, we went in the morning before 9am. We saw lots of seals lounging around on the rocks and swimming in the water. About an hour or so later, A LOT more people showed up. The crowds and noise seemed to drive the seals away. A bunch of morons scared them away by trying to walk on the rocks to get closer to them. The area is really beautiful- great views. Also a bunch of really cute squirrels running around. And it's free!

“Nice views but smells like sewage”
Reviewed July 5, 2011

Seals and their pups were lazing around to photograph. Kids playing in the water about 50 feet from the seals even though Signs were posted that the water was contaminated and had unacceptable bacteria levels ( my guess is from all the seal poop as you could smell it).

“Seals and Sunsets…”
Reviewed November 27, 2010

The Children’s Pool is a cove area formed by a man-made concrete barrier/breakwater. My Mother, who grew up in La Jolla, remembers when it was once a swimming area for children. Now it is an area where the California Harbor Seals gather year-round. Although you are allowed access to the beach area, it is highly discouraged, and any attempt to get close to the animals is considered harassment by federal law, not to mention probably down right dangerous. But it is easy to enjoy watching the creatures from the surrounding walls and breakwater. There was an information booth manned daily on the sidewalk level full of information about the seals, and included some related paraphernalia for sale.
This same area is a great place to view the sunset. The sun sets diagonally to your right from the breakwater. There were a number of people gathered there nightly to watch natures color show. There is no parking lot near the beach and street parking is limited.
