Owner description: Birch Aquarium at Scripps is the public exploration center for the world-renowned Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego. Perched on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the aquarium features more than 60 habitats of fishes and invertebrates from the cold waters of the Pacific Northwest to the tropical waters of Mexico and the Caribbean. An interactive museum showcases research discoveries by Scripps scientists on climate, Earth and ocean science.

The displays are very well done and the captions near the windows helped with species identification. They are obviously interested in education there. The touch tanks (outside) are very nicely down with moving water. The main tank is one of the smallest I've seen for a major aquarium. But the feeding done by the scuba diver was well done (happens 4 times weekly). It is too small to spend an entire day. The seahorse aquariums are the best, in my opinion.

The Birch Aquarium isn't very big, but the exhibits and view of the Pacific are worth a visit. The seahorses are particularly mesmerizing. The Climate Change exhibit emphasized potential impacts on ocean life, and was very educational. I'm not a big gift shop fan, but this museum gift shop had some very affordable presents for the folks back home and is worth a look.

The aquarium is well set out and has a good variety of Fisk. It also had an excellent hands-on display on global warming. Lots of 'play' things for younger kids. Thought the $17 entry fee was a bit high, but at least it was going to a good cause. Big car park with no charge.

I went there probably expecting a bigger aquarium, but it wasn't that way. The exhibition is quite small and there are not that many acitvities you can do if you're an adult, I guess that if you've got children they will have a good time. I went there on a Friday and the only visitor acitivity they had was just feeding the fish in a pond and an explanation about it. There is a giant tank right in the middle of the exhibition which is great and is very well kept (thumbs up to that one) plus, there is a great view of la Jolla from this place, if you wanna look at the enire la jolla beach with a great scenery this a good place to do so. If you're a globe trekker and pretty much interested on seeing a lot of places in a short amount of time, I'd avoid it, it takes quite some time getting from downtown San Diego to Birch aquarium and at $17 USD for entrance I wouldn't recomend it, if you're on a family trip or you've got children, I'd give it a shot.

Not an over the top, giant aquarium. Very manageable and welcoming to visit. We didn't bring kids but I think this would be perfect. They take an educational approach to what's presented and that was a nice touch. Interesting exhibit on climate change - makes one think! We got see the giant octopus swim and that was a treat. The staff is very engaging. Ask the questions and you will have a good experience. Easy, free parking.
