I brought my wife here for her birthday and were thoroughly surprised on how nice the property was. The Kimpton ownership has certainly changed the place in a good way, giving it more of a W feeling and caché. The friendly fellow at check in, who gave my wife a birthday card, has been with the hotel over the course of many years and 3 owners, and he admitted that it is better now than ever. The food and beverages are all excellent, and the bartender on the upper bar had some great concoctions to sip while watching the sunset. All the rooms have great views, and breakfast on the top floor on a beautiful morning was exceptional.
If there is one down side to the La Jolla, it is its location. It is neither in the village or the main shopping area so to get over to the cove, you have to drive. There are bikes available, but it is quite hilly over to the cove so the ride is not for the faint of heart. The old village is closer (and a flatter ride) so more accessible.
