“Disappointing so far”
Reviewed August 25, 2013

Two of three nights complete! Made reservations weeks ago, planning to spend three nights celebrating special anniversary, booked a partial ocean view room. Called a day ahead of arrival to confirm and note the trip was for special anniversary.
Arrived at 2':00PM Friday 8/23, room not ready, no big deal, check in was at 4. Was reminded of 4 check in but they would see what they could do. Headed out to explore La Jolla. Came back at 3:45, room not ready, room not ready at 4, room finally ready at 4:20PM.........hmmmmm
Oh, and while we were waiting for our room in the lobby bar, which is nice, the staff conducted a job interview with between three staff and the person interviewing. you got to be kidding me! At one point they asked how she would handle a rough situation which a client. I could hear the whole interview. I almost went over to the table and led what so would do to get a room ready on time for someone on a special trip.
Finally got to room, yikes full view of parking and roofs, not what we had expected from such a hotel. Spoke to front desk and was governing better room on 6th floor.
Second day: Hotel location is great, you can walk down to cliffs, beach and the hotel is built on hill so you can enter the hotel grounds at bottom of hill with room key rather than hike back up the hill. That is if your room key still works!!!! We thought the problem was with the entrance but when we got to our room we couldn't get in our room,so we walk back down to the lobby to get the keys fixed.
Stayed in many fine hotels with great service, the valets here are great. Staff smiles and are pleasant. Bottom line thought this would be great place to celebrate anniversary, wrong, so far special, if anything lots of issues. See what happens on our last day (And its Sunday now at 2:30 and the room hasn't been cleaned yet!)

Room Tip: Ask to see room before you accept it. Hotel is old and interesting but rooms and views are differen...

Dear Anniversary Guests -
Thank you for the 4 rating on our Rooms, Location and most importantly Cleanliness. I also appreciate your very positive comments about our valet staff and overall staffs pleasant nature and smiles – I am sorry that your comments on staff did not mirror your rating of a 2 on service but I will assume this was based on your 4:20 PM check-in experience; 20 minutes past our published time. We have every intention to meet our 4:00 pm check-in time and any early arrival request as operationally possible. As you point out, many rooms and room types at our vintage hotel are different and have different views - early arrival opportunities are based upon many factors including early departures or if the specific room type is vacant the night prior. Since we operate at 85% and above occupancy, we do not have much flexibility for specific vacant rooms every morning. Early arrival request are as numerous as late check-out requests – it is a delicate balance but I am sorry that the 20 minute lapse was sufficient to earn an overall 2 rating for your experience. In reference to your comment that your room as of 2:30 PM on a Sunday had not been cleaned; you may not realize that hotels generally do not begin to access occupied guest rooms until after 10:00 am out of respect for late sleepers. La Valencia does ensure that occupied rooms are re-freshed no later than 5:00 pm and we are happy to accommodate specific times when asked. La Valencia also provides evening turn-down service for a final re-fresh.
We recognize that first impressions are lasting – if you had called in advance to let us know of your early arrival expectations and that possibility did not materialize then the remainder of the stay can be tarnished – we apologize that this may have been the case.
Sincerely,
Mark Dibella,
Managing Director

Stayed here for a couple nights over the weekend for a work trip and it was well worth the price. Everything about my stay was great.

To start with the location is beautiful. So are the grounds and the Spanish feel to the hotel. Right on the beach so how can u beat that and on top of that an amazing pool.

One of the nights I ate at the restaurant in the hotel and it was top notch w amazing views. The food and service was great.

Any help I asked form the concierge was quickly taken for me and the hotel staff was attentive. Will def st at here again next time I'm in the area.

Dear Mexico Reviewer –
Remodeling? Actually we are renovating and yes we are currently finishing our newly rebuilt front entry portico which replaces an aging structure – the project occupies a tiny fraction of our multiple acre property. The foot print of this work is approximately 1,550 sq. ft. and has virtually no impact on the hotel or the entire ocean facing portion of the property.
Bad parking? Your final comments seem to indicate that you have been with La V in the past, if so then you should be aware that our parking has not changed in decades. We are pleased to own a private lot for our guest valet parking and we offer services 24/7. Our lot is only 1/4 block from the hotel so auto retrieval time is less than 3 minutes. Perhaps you opted to self park on your own in La Jolla and if so then yes, parking can be a challenge.
Tropicana and canned sauce? I will respectfully advise you that you are greatly misinformed – I can readily provide you with invoices referencing our fresh juice and fresh local organic produce suppliers as well as any of our quality food and beverage products. The latest article and photos from San Diego Fine Foods is but one of many renowned food critics’ reviews that speaks to our chef’s culinary talents and passion for quality.
La V is not cutting corners; we continue to add to the quality of our elegant icon from imported Frette linens in our guest rooms to Molton Brown of London imported bath amenities in our bathrooms to locally caught seafood served in our dining rooms – these are only a fraction of the many enhancements at La V – the list is long.
In closing, I do thank you for the positive reference to our service which is ultimately the foundation of great hospitality.
Sincerely,
Mark Dibella,

Our 3 nights at the La Valencia were disappointing. The hotel has been undergoing a much needed remodel and I was told that the work on the guest rooms was complete.
On the positive side the location is great. If you get a nice room in the newer building I think your experience might be positive, but the original hotel is old and they seem to be cutting corners on the remodel. It is more like a 3 star hotel. I don't know who owns the hotel but it is not an ownership that prides itself in giving a five star experience to its clientele. This is just an observation. We booked a full ocean view room in the historical building because the reservation agent said it was the largest room available at the time. The room was located on the 10th floor next to what used to be a restaurant and is now being used for meetings. The hallway smelled and was dark and dated. The walls both in the hallway and along one wall of our room were covered with tinted mirrors circa 1970. The rooms decor was very dated, depressingly so- couldn't have been remodeled within the last 20 years(at least). The heater vents in the room were FULL of dirt and dustballs as big as your fist. The bathroom was approximately 5' x 6' with a tiny sink. There were urine stains on the floor surrounding the toilet. Our bathtub was broken and wouldn't fill. The "full" ocean view was over ugly roofs of neighboring buildings. I honestly felt like I was caught in a 1970's time warp. A musty, dirty, dank, rundown 1970's time warp. All this for $600 per night.
Management was friendly but not very competent. They told me that they would switch our room the second night, but there was no communication between people working the front desk and they said they didn't have any other room available. They did credit us for two nights of parking(which they charge $29 per night for) which was a nice gesture.
The pool area is nice but there are not enough lounge chairs and people "save" chairs with a book or t-shirt for hours while not there. The food and drinks served by the pool were delicious and our dinner on the terrace was just ok.

Room Tip: Do not stay in1026.

Dear Newport Guest
I am very sorry that La V did not live up to your expectations. Please know that we take exceptional pride in operating and managing our iconic circa 1926 boutique hotel and with that we also recognize that the unique diversity of our historic property will not always match comparisons to newly built facilities but those I turn cannot compare to our vintage ambiance and personable elegance.
Room 1026 (along with all of our 112 guest rooms) was fully renovated in late 2012 from wall coverings to carpet to paint and new furniture. This room with picture window and separate French doors opening to one our petite Juliet balconies is located in our Tower wing (circa 1928) where rooms have 9 ft. ceilings and yes, more modest size bathrooms (6’ X 8’) compared to more spacious bathrooms in the Sevilla or Cabrillo wing or that of our circa 2000 villas. These rooms have sweeping views across the cove and the north California coastline which does include some roof tops of a few village business and residences below; including a view of a lovely pool and deck. The tower wing is roughly 9 stories above the nearest building. Room 1026 with a modest bathroom does include a spacious sitting area with sleeper sofa, club chair and ottoman along with our Serta king mattress beds with Frette sheets. LG TV’s, ihome s along with Kuerig coffee and private honor bars are thoughtfully placed and part of every room amenity – Bath products are Moulton Brown of London with can only be found in 16 hotels in California.
Although we have completed guest room renovations not all corridors have been renovated; only the Cabrillo wing as of August. In September we will be renovating the remaining corridors with new custom carpets, wall coverings and paint. The tinted mirrors are only on the 10th floor where our former Skyroom restaurant was located and are indeed from the 1980’s – this space will be converted to suites later this year to take advantage of the 180 degree views of the Pacific Ocean. Upon receipt of your review I personally inspected room 1026 and indeed I was embarrassed to find that the HVAC filters were heavily clogged although not to the description you noted but never-the-less unacceptable. The bathroom floors are gray and black marble and there are hard water shadows that cannot be bleached. The tub did fill when tested however I did find that the tub hardware was showing signs of calcium build-up; these areas will be address by our engineering staff.
Thank you for the compliments on our pool service food and beverage and our location – we greatly value the recognition. Although we cannot change the perception of your experience we do appreciate your feedback and comments – these will continue to push our staff to deliver a better and better experience.
Best regards,
Mark Dibella,

We recently stayed at La Valencia with our two children ages 12 and 10. The room we booked was with two Queens and it was rather small for four people. Perhaps we should have booked a villa for more room although I will say that the bathroom was nice and roomy.

Positives: The view from the hotel (not our actual room) was gorgeous and the location was very convenient to shops, restaurants and the cove. The pool area was beautiful. The concierge was very sweet by giving us champagne and strawberries for our anniversary. The maid service was good as well.

Negatives: The pool area was too small for the number of guests as you couldn't find a place to sit in the sun unless you got down there by 10. The pool area felt very unfriendly to children as our son was playing with a ball (not even close to splashing people) and some guy got up and complained to the staff because he was afraid his mother would get wet. If you are going to sit by the edge of the pool, you can expect a drop of water to get on you. The prices for food and drinks were high as expected. Strange thing, my husband went to get ice for drinks in our room and he was told since it was a four-star hotel, he wasn't allowed to get the ice. We have stayed at many four-star hotels and were able to get our own ice. Also, when we did ask for something from the front desk (help with the safe, etc.) it took over an hour for someone to come up. We didn't want to wait that long for ice. There seemed to be an issue with air flow in the building as we were either roasting at night or freezing with the air conditioner.

Overall, it was a nice historic hotel that is probably better suited to couples.

Room Tip: Get a villa if you want more room.

Dear Portland Family
I have read and re-read your review to craft an appropriate response.
I greatly appreciate the many positives you mention on areas very important to us such as guest services, location, pool area and our concierges’ recognition of your anniversary. And yes, you are correct, our villas and suites do offer more space for larger families. I am at a loss for a response to your pool experience with another guest. I would agree that if you sit by or near a pool you should expect to possibly get wet however we cannot control the comments or the actions of all of our guests – we do hope that all guests are respectful of each other.
Due the vintage era of our facility we do not have ice rooms on all floors so guest access is not easily accessible - therefore it is our service policy to personally deliver ice upon request. I apologize for the hour delay in assisting with the safe; we should certainly have better communicated a more realistic time to address this request.
La V is suited for families, couples or singles and their four footed friends – we are very pet friendly. We are indeed a more relaxed and low key experience and we hope this ambiance combined with the grandeur of the Pacific and her ocean breezes delivers a stress free escape.

Mark Dibella,

We popped in for drinks one Friday in the bar. The waitress was very friendly, there was live Spanish guitar, and fantastic ocean views. Really enjoyable, welcoming atmosphere.
The views of the sunset from the balcony were beautiful - wished I had had dinner here!

Dear Lux Life –
Please pop in more often – La V features live entertainment 7 nights a week (the guitarist is one of my favorites and his music blends so seamlessly with our circa 1926 Mediterranean inspired architecture. Thank you very much for staying your experience and we hope you make time to sample Chef Daniel Barron’s magic in the MED restaurant and terrace!

Room Tip: Booked a partial ocean view for one night and was upgraded to the Garden Suite -- ooh la la!
