We received outstanding service from every single employee at the hotel. Pool staff was especially helpful and friendly -- food and drink were delicious, too. It was well worth the splurge to stay here! Location can't be beat.

Room Tip: Booked a partial ocean view for one night and was upgraded to the Garden Suite -- ooh la la!

Dear Ooh La La!
I am thrilled that you splurged on your self and have no doubt it was well deserved; thank you for splurging at La V. I am very pleased that staff, services and a little touch of our up-grade made your stay so enjoyable. Life is short – splurge more!

This restaurant is the perfect place for lunch especially if you want to miss the pretentious crowds at George's. come here for absolutely delicious food and cocktails with a stunning ocean view on the terrace. I didn't stay in the hotel but judging by the surroundings and the bathrooms I'm sure it would be stunning.

Dear Lunch Guest –
Many thanks for the kudos on your dining experience. Our Executive Chef Daniel Barron has been crafting some exceptional and savory new additions to our MED restaurant menus and yes, there is nothing that compares with our terrace or La Sala lounge for La Jollas finest views, libations and dining; thank you!
See you soon for breakfast, lunch, dinner or all of the above when you decide to make La V an overnight destination.

There for one night, a surprisingly small king-bed room for $400. I had to move the desk chair over next to the door to be able to move around. The people were very nice, the service was in some ways great, in some ways so-so. It's an older, very well kept up property, not unlike going to your grandma's house. Didn't use the pool, altho that looked pretty nice.

Dear Solo Guest,
I very much appreciate the 5 on cleanliness and sleep quality – these are truly the most important items of a hotel stay. Thank you also for recognizing our well kept maintenance of the property – not always an easy task with a venue almost 9 decades old. Our 112 rooms include a diverse selection at a wide rate spectrum. Your room sounds like it was in our Tower wing, our smaller rooms with some of the finest views; I can appreciate that a one night stay likely did not warrant the value of a view that you may not have had time to enjoy. Our village view rooms are the best value especially for the overnight stay where view is not the goal. Next time please stay longer, enjoy the view and definitely use the pool; it is one of our showpieces.
Best regards,
Mark Dibella,
Managing Director

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 29, 2013

It had always been my dream to stay here having vacationed in La Jolla as a child. This was the ultimate fantasy for me...to stay in the pink castle! It turned out to be a nightmare! We were confirmed in an ocean villa. When the belllman took us to our room, it was so small you had to go outside to change your mind! This was no ocean villa! The staff could not have been nicer, but they were telling me that I was NOT confirmed in that category when I clearly had a confirmation on their letterhead stating that in fact I was! They said they were completely sold out, but managed to show me another broom closet of a room that overlooked the terra cotta tiles on the roof which housed hundreds of squaking seagulls. Again...not an ocean villa! I was ready to leave when behold, a villa came available! It was heaven compared to the other rooms. Overall, would not return. Service is spotty, staff, though quite lovely needs more hotel experience. I would not fault them at all, but think this hotel needs a lot of work. It is hard to believe it was just completely renovated! To get to the villas, the nicest rooms on property, you have to take 2 elevators and then walk through a dark hallway where the laundry is and maids are housed! Your option is to walk up and down 4 flights of stairs! When your stay begins on a negative vibe, it is difficult to get passed it. However, the best experience we had was with Bob, our patient and delightful bellman!

Room Tip: NEVER get a room in the "historic" section unless you enjoy sleeping in a broom closet!

Dear Rancho Mirage Guest;
Thank you first and foremost for recognizing our bellman Bob and also for noting our very nice staff; personable and genuine service is a number one goal. I am sorry that your arrival and expectation for a Villa did not materialize as you were expecting. We hold ourselves full responsibility for any error on availability for specific room types when a reservation is booked directly through the hotel however many reservations are also made through 3rd party web sites which will also include our logo on letterhead confirmations and often these do not guarantee room types. La V does have a large variety of rooms types; I can assure you that none are closets but I can also appreciate your description of small space - if you were taken to a traditional/vintage room (most are located in the ocean facing tower wing) then these 250-300 sq. ft. rooms pale in size to the 650 sq. ft. and larger villas and suites (most of our suites are located in our historic Cabrillo and Sevilla Wings. The Villas are indeed 6 floors below our main entry and also closer to Scripps Park and the Ocean. We are a historic boutique hotel so yes, elevators and walkways are the route to access these 16 very private units built in 2000. Your perception is a reality we greatly respect and as you mentioned, your stay did not get off to the right start and I am very sorry that the team at La V could not turn that around; our apologies.
Thank you for your time and feedback – we will continue to work on crafting ideal guest experiences.

Stayed at La Valencia for 3 nights in July. As others have stated: Charming property and great location. However, I was unfortunate enough to be completely devoured by bugs in the mattress in our room; most probably fleas (acc. to my doctor). The personnel had the matress deep cleaned the minute I made them aware of the problem. That being said, I am now well into a heavy anti-biotics cure, and have rashes all over my body. Will from now on stay at "no-pet premises" only.

Dear Oslo Guest;
We appreciate your decision to stay at La V and thank you for the kind description of our charming property and ideal location. I understand that our staff did offer to move your room location when your concerns arose and you declined. To address your concerns our housekeeping and management staff did inspect the room immediately and no indication of any activity was found; we also reviewed prior occupancy of the room for reference. We did clean the carpet to appease your concerns but we did not deep clean your mattress as described as there is no such process. La V maintains a regular system of inspection and servicing throughout the year to ensure that the property is pest free. Please recognize however we are located on the scenic bluffs and ocean coastline of La Jolla Cove, rugged and beautiful areas sought after by our guests – we keep as much of that environment as possible out but cannot keep out what walks back in with our guests from a day at the beach or the park. I am sorry that our efforts to move rooms was not sufficient but I can assure you that our housekeeping practices are exceptionally well managed.
Thank you for listening –

My wife and I had a great time here. What a perfect location where you can walk everywhere in town. It also had a really nice pool and the workout room had what I needed. The restaurant is very good and has pretty good happy hour specials and delicious food. I thought the staff was excellent and always very helpful. I will be going back again in the next few years.

Room Tip: We had a partial view to the ocean and it still was awesome.
