The hotel is under reconstruction which involves extremely loud drilling and hammering. This repeatedly interrupted us during our three day stay, despite management routinely claiming they were putting a stop to the work going on directly above the room where our meeting was being held. Which is a shame because its a characterful building in a good location with great food and otherwise attentive service. Perhaps when the manager replies to this post he can definitively state the date when all the construction work will be complete. Until then, caveat emptor.

Dear Important Guest;

We apologize profusely for the construction noise during your stay; (which will be complete in only days) our project encountered an unforeseen structural issue which required immediate work which was indeed very intrusive and noisy. Our staff was conveying information to guests based on the contractor worst case scenario information and ultimately the problem proved significant. The issue was solved after 5 days of un-planned extensive work and intrusion. Having spent a year quietly and successfully renovating our rooms this period was our only major obstacle and again, I am very sorry it occurred during your stay. I am pleased to know that you recognize that our location, ambiance and especially service are great – the major work is past us so please consider a return to our truly enchanting destination.

Many thanks,

Mark Dibella,
Managing Director

My husband and I stayed here last weekend on a snique away offer. It is a beautiful old style hotel right on the cove in La Jolla. Our deal was for partial ocean view room and initially the front desk gave us room 927. At first we couldn't find it because it was behind a construction barrier curtain on that corridor. It looked like it was totally remodeled but every other room was being worked on--all you could hear was power saws. So we went back to the front desk and we got room 200 in a different building, which was part of the hotel, but was already completely remodeled. The only downside was that we were on the street side, which was a little noisy during the day, but no issue at night with the AC on. The bed was super comfortable and it was nice to have a fridge in addition to a mini bar. We stopped for a per-dinner drink at the hotel bar, which had live entertainment and was really busy. The porters, valets and other service folks were very helpful.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that isn't near the construction.

Dear Beach Guest,

First and foremost thank you for the great praise on our staff and their service; it is greatly appreciated. I am glad that our staff provided you with an alternate room location and am truly sorry that the first choice was near our final renovation site; we are only a couple weeks away from completing a full renovation of all 112 of our rooms, suites and villas and are just down to wallpapering and painting! I am happy to know that you enjoyed a beverage in La Sala Lounge and we are pleased to set the tone with ocean front cocktails and live entertainment every night through sunset on the Pacific. Please plan to return soon.

Best regards,

Stayed here many years ago, and just came back for a small meeting. This is a beautiful historic hotel in the center of La Jolla. The location is fantastic, right in the center of town on a bluff overlooking the ocean. Service was generally good, but the hotel is undergoing renovation--meaning construction debris being carted on the single elevator, jackhammer on the roof, workers in hall early in the morning etc. There is a temporary fitness & business center in one of the suites, minimally equipped but a nice view. My room appeared to be remodeled; nice bed, but the bathroom was very small, difficult to maneuver in. Others in our group had huge rooms, though, so apparently the rooms vary quite a bit. Internet is free, worked well. So overall, this is still a nice place to stay, but I would be aware of the construction, time my visit accordingly. (perhaps the GM can comment on the estimated completion date)

Dear Roadwarrier,

Thank you for taking time to share your review on La V during your recent return for a meeting. We are indeed in the final phases of our guest room renovations and I apologize that some of these last details of this project impacted your stay. We will be finished in just a couple weeks with the final floor of our 11 story main building and excited that our “Pink Lady” will have all her rooms primped and pretty. Our Villas, West Wing and 1926 wing are all completed. I am delighted that you enjoyed our remodeled and decorated rooms along with our many amenities and services including complimentary Wi-Fi. Please plan to return soon!

We recently stayed at the La Valencia for a couple of days and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Being semi retired, we travel a lot in Europe and North America. Our room (an ocean villa) was one of the most comfortable rooms we have ever stayed in. The bed, furnishings, room design and huge bathroom were all top cabin. Staff was very friendly and attentive.

The pool area was lush and public rooms are designed in the old hotel style - warm and romantic.

We checked into another, similar star hotel in the La Jolla area after leaving the La Valencia, which we had previously booked. Our disappointment in this second hotel was instant when we compared it to La Valencia.

One comment about parking... it is very expensive at this hotel, but no cheaper at our second hotel. I guess it comes with staying in La Jolla.

Room Tip: ocean villa is worth the price

Whew, one more check-off on my bucket list. If you have not had the pleasure of a La Valencia Hotel stay I suggest you try it soon. I will put their beds up against any on the planet for comfort. If you can't sleep with Pacific Ocean waves caressing your ears or the crackling of an in room fireplace then consider staying inland. It's hard to imagine a more romantic location but let me know if you find one better than this classic hotel in downtown La Jolla. Visit soon but don't tell too many people. :) Wendy, Alyssa sp? and bar staff were all great, what a California treasure. Oh yeah, La Jolla means jewel in Spanish I think...makes sense.

Room Tip: If you can swing it in the budget try on Ocean Villa w balcony with ocean view. Most all rooms look...

Dear Costa Rica Traveler –

I am thrilled that La V made your bucket list and that we delivered; thank you. You stay in one of our Villas was indeed an ideal setting to enjoy the best of our enchanting setting since these accommodations include some lavish trappings including spa like bathrooms, private patios and balconies and some with fireplaces. I do agree, falling asleep to the sounds of the Pacific makes for a perfect night. Thank you also for mentioning some of our staff; they are truly the jewels in our collection.

Travel safe and we hope you return soon.

My husband and I had spent the week in downtown San Diego celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary and wanted to take the weekend to splurge and spend a couple of days at the LaValencia...we had heard a good review. We were given a room with a beautiful view, however there was a wedding party 2 floors beneath us that was very loud and disruptive until late at night. We did call the front desk(even though we felt a little hypocritical, after all we were celebrating a 'wedding' anniversary and this was a 'wedding' party), and they said they would have them turn it down but it did no good. Our 'special weekend' turned into wasted money and regret that we had stayed there. However, by the end of the night we did know the names of the bride, groom, and all the wedding party, we could hear all the conversations, (it was that loud!) and that was with the windows closed. I hate to give a poor review, but this was truly a disappointing experience!

Room Tip: Ask if there are any 'special events' near your room before you splurge on this stay.

Dear Tennessee traveler,
First and foremost, congratulations on your 25th wedding anniversary; such a wonderful milestone. I am sorry that the festivities from a wedding celebration impacted your special occasion. As your tip indicates, we do have a wide variety of rooms and locations that can better ensure our guests are in the spot that best suits their plans. La V plays host to wedding celebrations almost every weekend and we do require that all music ends at 10:00 pm in our ballroom (located at the south end of our property) so that the ambiance of the property for the balance of the evening captures our coastal setting. We do hope you consider a return, please feel free to reach out to me directly as I would love to make arrangements for one of our ocean facing suites or private and romantic villas.
Best regards,
Mark Dibella,
