We stayed here as part of a relaxing late-summer break in San Diego. The hotel is by the coast on the edge of downtown La Jolla. In a generally quiet spot, the hotel is a short walk from the restaurants and shops of the centre of town. The hotel offers great views and the sound of the ocean, we sat in the park oposite to watch a Pacific sunset more than once.

The rooms are spacious, clean and well apoointed. Our's had a living area with sofa and coffee table. Our room was always well cleaned and supplied with quality toiletries (Aveda, I think).

The hotel, as other reviewers have stated, is on the edge of a residential area and I think this gives it some of its charm. It is very relaxed yet only a short stroll away from town. A perfect place to come to wind down for a few days.

I've posted some photographs of Scripps in and La Jolla to my website: --------

My wife and I stayed at the Scrpps Inn for four wonderful evenings in April of 2006. With a bit of trepidation after perusing some of the reviews posted on Trip Advisor, we opened the door to our room. To our pleasant surprise, their least expensive room was quite large, bright with cable TV, had plenty drawers and closets for all our clothes, contained a refrigerator and coffee maker, and there certainly was a sevicable bathroom with plenty of room for storage. Yes, the carpet was a bit worn and had some stains. The towels were not very thick and we did not feel awash in opulent luxury. Yet, everything was very clean and the mattress comfortable. Who needs opulence when you can sleep to the sound of the Pacific waves and awake to the ocean across the street. Every morning we took a glorious walk along the sea, and every evening we viewed the sun set on their deck drinking Bloody Marys. The staff was warm and accommodating. The Scripps Inn was sold out on our return to La Jolla, and our holiday was not as enriching. To experience the quintissential La Jolla, stay at the Scripps Inn.

We stayed 2 nights April 06 while visiting Point Loma Christian University approx. 20 min. away....Omar the inn keeper was so very pleasant, We are not fond of "hotels" so we always look for B&B'/Inns with pleasant ,comfortable accomadations. The Scripps Inn had very nice reviews on trip advisor. We stayed in a 2 Bdrm.w/ kitchen/ liv Rm with a beautiful shared deck overlooing the ocean...we were the only ones on the deck! it was very cottagey...simple but just what we like, clean and had everything we needed, iron, hair dryers nice bath products and the very large town of LaJolla is right out your back door! very upscale town but wonderful/friendly people.."The cottage" for breakfast was the best ..so cute & the food excellent! 49.00 for 2 adults 2 teens for breakfast...worth it!
we will always stay at The Scripps Inn when in San Diego..it was perfection to us! I would put a mirror in the 2 bedrooms as we had 2 teen girls & Mom getting ready each morning...

First of all the room was not at all similar to ad in Scripps Inn website. The carpet was filthy, the furniture worn and out of date. The toilet would not flush without taking the tank lid off and jiggling something. There were silverfish in the bedding. The electricity would go off if hair dryer was on. Had to buy candles to cover up smell in room. We would not recommend Scripps to anyone.

We stayed for three nights at the Inn and enjoyed very much. The location is just perfect - directly above the cliffs, very close to the beach where the seals lounge and within walking distance to La Jolla village with its superb restaurants.

The Inn is charming, New-England-Style. With our family, we had one double room with fireplace (completely equipped with wood and lighters) and a suite that slept four. The suite had a kitchen and a dinner-table, so we prepared light meals there.

I cannot understand the other reviewers' criticms. Both rooms were tastefully decorated and furnished. Everything was clean and in good shape. However, it IS a historic inn and the atmosphere of the whole building is somewhat historic (like the Hotel del Coronado). If you prefer a sterile business hotel, do not choose Scripps Inn.

Okay, breakfast is scarce - just pastries - but it is a gift horse. We bought other things in a supermarket and had wonderful breakfast in our room.
