A golfer but not on a golf holiday had to have a look at Torrey Pines. Delighted when one of the staff in the cart shed offered to show us around the courses. He took us around the South and North courses showing us several holes including the signature par 3's playing down hill to the Pacific. What a treat.

Torrey Pines (south) was the conclusion of our epic golfing road-trip which began in San Francisco and ended in San Diego. Nine days, eleven rounds, three US Open venues and other Californian golfing gems. Torrey was our only true "public course" and it held up well wiith good conditioning and some really nice/challenging holes. Playing with some locals we benefitted from local knowledge and a reasonable green fee but all in all our vist was really enjoyable. An excellent breakfast in the adjoining lodge set us up for the round and the course seemed to have an efficient marshalling system which enabled completion within a nice tidy 4 hrs.
Well worth a visit to see what the pro's faced but probably not memorable enough (3rd & 4th holes excepted) to get these Northern Ireland golfers to put it on our must play schedule a second time. That is not a criticism, simply a realisation that by comparison Torrey Pines does not make it into our top 20 venues.

Great scenery and challenging course.

The North Course is more for the casual golfer or an experienced player that is looking to have a relaxing time. The South Course will eat you alive. It must be the reason the pros play here. The 13th Hole is my favorite design for a hole, but it's a Par 5 that lowers in elevation before rising up to a green surrounded by bunkers on a hill. It's like a bunker castle.

The beer cart girls are always around so you'll never go thirsty. The helicopters and jets flying out of Miramar provide a brief air-show break from your game but can get annoying when they are non-stop.

There are no real faults to Torrey Pines. Especially when it's $40 dollars to play the North Course on a weekday as a resident.

We showed up at 5:30 to get in line to be the first people off on the South Course. That worked very well. Some people are locals and are going off the North Course, some people like us were visitors and were going off the South Course.

Played the South course on a spare half day in San Diego enroute to Palm Springs. Wasn't the cheapest round I played this year, but course was in great shape and worth the effort to go play it. Very open layout with everything in front of you, challenging but very fair course.

I was a bit worried I would arrive to a line up of golfers waiting to play, but course was quiet -- despite it's reputation, it's still a local municipal course that likely suffers some cancellations when the weather isn't perfect. Arrived at 6:30am as a single on an overcast and slightly wet Fri morning in mid August, joined up with a twosome at 7am and was done just after 11am.
