Cutting to the chase: The Mountain Club is the best located property at Kirkwood with ski in, ski out convenience, in the heart of the resort and the amenities it offers. The rooms are modern and clean and would earn 3 Stars if housekeeping was provided and the linens were better quality. The staff is friendly, but offers limited guest & room services.
If you're planning your trip around skiing and riding some of the best terrain in the Sierras, want a few amenities (access to hot tub, steam, sauna & fitness equipment), The Mountain Club may be a good choice. If you'd like a bit more luxury, with fresh soft sheets and towels and regular room cleaning, you might want to look elsewhere.
The setup: Let me start by saying that Kirkwood is our "Home" mountain. I love the terrain (great steeps, chutes, and the best tree runs anywhere) and the friendly, laid back vibe on the mountain. If you're considering staying at Kirkwood, you probably already know that this is a place for skiers & snowboarders. There's cross country skiing and snow cat expeditions as well, but if your idea of Heaven doesn't involve skiing, snowboarding or the back country, you'd be better off staying in South Lake Tahoe and enjoying the stunningly beautiful 30 minute drive to and from "The Wood" for the day.
Being committed members of the former group, we've returned year after year to The Wood and have come to love the crunchy granola flavor of the facilities and world class riding terrain. Having seen and tried most of the other (limited) housing options, we decided to splurge on a room at
The Mountain Club this year. Although the rooms are managed through The Lodge, we did not find out that these are "no service" rooms, until asking the front desk why our trash bins weren't being emptied and the complementary coffee packets weren't being replaced. Apparently cleaning and fresh towels are only provided to prepare a room for its next occupant. The front desk did offer cleaning by request, but at a sizable extra cost. For us, going with maid service for a few days was no big deal, but I believe that when you pay for a premium room, the service should be included or the booking staff should explain the situation.
