Kanawa Island is potentially the best place we stayed in during our 4 weeks in Indonesia. Me and a friend went there to do some diving, and only booked in for 3 nights. We ended up staying for 9 nights! The staff are all very able and so kind and helpful. The dive center is well run (Ed from the UK) and boasts a 5 star padi dive resort award. The food is good, best food can be found in Hero's (the cook) daily specials.
You can choose to stay in either a tent, a bungalow or a "Bale Bale" which is less than 15m from the water and in my opinion the best option as its windiest near the sea, and therefore cooler.
Over the course of the 9 days we did 12 dives each. Never disappointed.
All in all! Amazing.

Like they said, it's a tropical small island. Take 1 hour from Labuan bajo by boat. The beach good for swimming and excellent for snorkeling. Stayed here for 2 nights with my husband, daughter (5 years old) and my mom. The bungalow is very basic, very hot at night but fine we had a great time here at kanawa. First time swimming with baby shark here, we saw 3-4 baby shark looking for food in the morning. Beautiful corals and colorful fishes.

The food: If u want to order food, better order the pizza!

and just noted at 12PM will be no lights in this island. It was great experience stayed in Kanawa, a small island with no electricity at night and no signal ( feels like a free people, LOL)

We stayed in the bungalows for six nights. I will admit it was a culture shock upon arrival. You are truly isolated, but it lends itself to meeting other guests and really enjoying your surroundings. We took three snorkel trips, swam with 15 foot mantas, kayaked around the island and visited Komodo Island. It did get hot at night, and the accommodations are rustic. But we loved it!!! It truly was the best part of our trip.

Staying over on this island will cost you more than most places around. Don't let this put you off... it's a tropical beach paradise. Planned on staying one night, ended up staying two. If you have the funds it's an excellent place to stop over on the way back from komodo. They run a free shuttle boat back to the mainland in the morning.

Room Tip: deluxe rooms seemed the same as the standard. wouldn't pay the extra.

My husband and I stayed on Kanawa for 6 wonderful nights. It was not enough! I found Kanawa through TripAdvisor and upon booking noticed they had a dive centre. I emailed Ed from the dive centre to arrange for us to do our PADI - Open Water course and as a result, we got 5 nights FREE accommodation in a Bale.

It was the best decision we have ever made, not only was the diving amazing but the Bale is the best way to experience Kanawa! There is no air-con or fans on the island but staying in a Bale on the beach gives you a lovely breeze at night. Also as there is no fresh water on the island there are minimal mosquitoes due to there being no where for them to lay their eggs. Instead water is shipped to the island daily and all other water used for the bathroom is salt water (very Eco-friendly) so no real need to worry about getting bitten!

The house reef is perfect for snorkeling with minimal currents running around the island. You can see turtles, baby reef sharks, parrot fish, trigger fish, frog fish, lion fish and many many more, just by snorkeling on the surface!!

The food was good, limited choice but it's all fresh and well prepared. They are trying to grow as much on the island as possible and they do a daily specials menu to mix the selection up a bit. Not too expensive either (if you compare it to dining out in Bali and the Gili Islands are much more expensive).

PLEASE IGNORE ALL NEGATIVE REVIEWS ON SERVICE!! In regards to the restaurant service, your on an island do you really need your dinner served fast? It is a bit slow during the dinner rush but EVERYTHING is made fresh!! There is only a handful of staff on the island and they are all very polite and speak English quite well and will do anything for you. It is a very very relaxed atmosphere, which is what you want on holiday! However if your in a hurry for food, get to the restaurant early and place your order before sitting down...SIMPLES!

If your not in the water you can trek to the top of the mountain, walk around the island or swing from a hammock, plenty to do but I do suggest diving!! The dive centre on the island is second to none, I have never felt so at home in such a small time!

At night there is not much to do but star gaze or get a Bintang at the "Safety Stop Bar". The stars are amazing, 0% light pollution!

TIPS: Take a torch, take plenty of sunscreen, take some snacks (as between lunch and dinner you can get a bit peckish), take batteries (eventhough there is power to the Bales between 6-9pm, you don't want your camera dying mid-day), take an underwater camera, if you miss the free shuttle to Kanawa don't be afraid to haggle for a better price. The Kanawa office was going to charge us 450k Rp, however we paid 250k Rp with a guy who didn't work for the Kanawa team to take us across.

We would go back in a heart beat! This is our second home...we will be back!

Room Tip: We stayed in a Bale which had a nice breeze in the evening.

Are you looking for a 5-star-resort?
Are you looking for full comfort and luxury?
Then keep looking, because Kanawa Island is only for true travelers/explorers.

Are you looking for the most amazing paradise island - remote and basic with great hospitality?
Are you looking for a place with an incredible sunrise and an astonishing sunset?
Are you looking for white beaches and blue sea?
Are you looking for a place to relax and forget the rest of the world?
Are you adventurous enough to live in basic comfort, yet have everything (and actually still more than) you *really* need?
Then Kanawa is where you want to go!!

It's the second time I went to Kanawa and the place keeps blowing me off my feet. Describing it as paradise doesn't even do it justice.
I've seen many people extend their holiday on Kanawa because they just couldn't get enough of it - and who can blame them? It's a dream coming true!!

I'll definately be back there soon!

Room Tip: The bungalows are more private - you'll have your own shower and toilet. But I've seen many...

I went to this island with my mum and had the most incredible experience. i stayed in a bungalow that stepped down almost onto the beach. After one day i already felt more relaxed and i settled into the groove of the island. It is by far the most beautiful place i have ever been to! The reefs 10 meters of the shore were full of sea life including a very friendly turtle that was more than happy to let me swim along side of him. I have already recommended for all my friends and family to go there and i cant wait to go back.

Room Tip: Book Bungalow 3 it was right down the end and stepped right onto the beach
