An underground spring flowing through a hill meets a hard rock layer and then the water flows out of the side of the hill.

The waterfall is impressive for its gentle nature. The water only falls for about three metres, but is about 100 metres wide and curved in a horseshoe shape. At the edges you can even touch the waterfall.

The foot path from the road to the waterfall is well signposted. It is only a five minute walk up a dirt trail. There are plenty of free of charge car parking spaces along the road and some small shops selling snacks and local produce.

We visited on a rainy day. There were relatively few visitors. I can imagine it gets very busy in high season.

Nice little wide but low falls. If viewed when autumn leaves are flourishing then would be best. Short walk

Shiraito means white threads, refer to the graceful thread like streams of water, cascading down the falls. The falls are only 3m tall but spread out over a 70m wide arch. Really crystal clear water surrounded by moss covered rocks and lush forests. Gorgeous to look at the falls amidst the splendid colors of the leaves in this fall. .

A good 20min stopover place if you happen to be around the area , dont if you need to drive more than 30mins/ take a bus to reach there .

A small cool place with short waterfall to rest your mind on a road trip .

Remember to try the charcoal roasted fish (ayu ?) sold at the roadside stall.

A quick easy trip from anywhere in the Karuizawa area. I went on a day prior to a Typhoon so the area was relatively light so it was great! I can imagine it is generally crowded but a beautiful spot and I can imagine the best to see in the fall with the foliage.
