Just returned from a first time family trip to Japan and China. All hotels were supposed to be 5 star (Park Hyatt-Tokyo, Raffles-Beijing, Golden Flower-Xiian, Four Seasons-Shanghai). This was beyond horrendous.

As we approaced our room, the concerns began. We saw filthy carpeting in the halls and burned out light bulbs. Our room was a "suite" that should have had an extra bed for our daughter. It was not there and when our guide called the desk, a mattress and pillow were brought up and thrown on the floor. Carpeting and walls were stained and filthy. Our king size bed consisted of a mattress about an inch and a half deep on wood slats (no boxspring!). It didn't really matter because we got no sleep all night anyway. The thermostat in the room was 27 degrees celsius ( about 87 fahrenheit). Our guide asked about this and was told that the AC was broken. There were holes in the ceiling where there were once chandeliers and the lights in the ceiling (directly above our heads) could not be turned off.

No one spoke any English (in fact we were the only Westerners in sight). In the morning when we entered the breakfast room we encountered a scene so dirty, smelly and disgusting that we turned to run out. We spotted a refrigerator with bottled water and attempted to ask for a bottle for each of us. Depite the fact that breakfast was included - and we clearly were not eating - we were told that there would be a charge for the water. We were so incensed we just gave back the bottles and left.

In fact there should be a rating of no stars for a place like this. Before the days I could afford 5 star lodging, I travelled as a student and never faced conditions like this anywhere in the world. What a disgrace! The travel agent should also have known better.
