This temple is apparently in pretty original condition and the site is quite impressive. There are also several extensive museum collections where it is possible to witness the degrading and bizzare rituals that certain pompous religious leaders would inflict on the civilians ... If they were not scared enough. Worth a look.

During our travels around China I have to admit I became a bit fatigued by Temples. To some extent they began to blur into one big Temple with broadly the same aspects. There were however exceptions and Chenghuang Temple was one such place.
We arrived here about mid morning and it was very quiet as it had been a wet start to the day and only just dried up. The Temple was very quiet and we accessed using the Day Pass ticket for Pingyao. This cost 150RMB and gave admission to numerous sites – many of which are very, very similar to be honest but the ticket is good value even just for the city walls and a few sites.

The Temple is large and has several sections of rooms, and courtyard areas. The rooms have different purposes and the one of real note is the one depicting torture, hell etc. Unbelievably graphic and yet with the use of such vibrant colours and the sculpting style they kind of looked humorous to me. The outside areas are really nice and I could not resist climbing up and swing the log on to the big bell – what a great sound. With the sounds the sites and the scent of incense this place had a genuine atmosphere which lacked in other sites.

When we went in we saw a nice temple but the minute we entered the main temple we were under the spell of some priests. They seperated us and did a little ceremony and then wanted us to write down an amount of money. 'For what?', we thought too late. They insisted we put the amount written down in their moneyboxes. 'For our good luck', they said.... We think it is for their good luck.
After we noticed that they did the same trick to us both we didn't pay both (or else we paid $70, now 'only' $35). For priests they were not nice after our refusal.
We left and didn't have the patience to see the rest of the beautiful temple. It might be a nice temple to visit if you don't get swindled.
After this visit we became very cautious with other priests in other temples trying to 'give' us some incense to burn. In this Taoist temple they spoiled the luck of others.
