Staff is very friendly and very helpful in arranging anything you need in terms of day trip / pickup / bike rental, and our kids had lots of fun with them .... The rooms are clean, very comfortable. The inn is very charming and we have had a marvellous time with our 4 children (aged 4 to 11). Food is very good, so there is no need to wander around town in search of a place for dinner or breakfast, which made our life easier. I highly recommend the place

We stayed here for 3 nights during our 6 week trip to China. Originally booked into another hotel we were very pleased to be staying at TYK as the room was lovely and the central location was brilliant. It ws very easy for us to walk to all the local sites with the only issue being carrying our luggage through the streets during the time that vehicle traffic is not allowed.

Admittedly we stayed in a deluxe room but TYK surpassed our expectations and the local food served in the restaurant was excellent..

I've stayed here several times. On this most recent visit, I had a good stay without problems, though the staff was a bit less attentive than usual due to being very busy, but still did a fine job.

The main benefit of this hotel are the charming courtyards, perhaps more-so than many of the competitors, as this inn features several small courtyards, rather than a large central courtyard. Next are the rooms, which feature traditional-style furniture. This time, I stayed in one of the Deluxe/'Luxurious' Rooms instead of a standard double, and they are nicer, though it is probably worth taking a look when checking in to see if you feel it is worth upgrading. A plus of this hotel is that rooms have a larger bed and 1-2 singles, so are good for families and those who want to share a room.

The rooms have character, are pretty big, and the bathrooms are often huge (each room is unique). Lighting is not fantastic, and while the furnishings are nice, the floors are basically just painted concrete in the room and tile in the bathroom. As one of the older courtyard hotels in Pingyao, the hotel has been updated frequently, but not fully rennovated. Also, there are not many extras beyond soap, shampoo and a hair dryer. We also received a pack with a comb, toothbrush and toothpaste on check-in.

The Western breakfast is acceptable, though the 'strawberry' pancake is just a pancake with jam. At least they have real coffee. In the evenings, the restaurant was very busy during our stay, and the food was decent. The main reception desk is in the restaurant.

Overall, our stay was pleasant as usual. It is not a cheap hotel, but seems a reasonable moderate choice for a courtyard hotel in old Pingyao.

Room Tip: Rooms are unique, so it might be worth asking to see a few before settling on one. Some have canopy...

The TYK guesthouse, smack bang in the middle of Pingyao, is a fantastic place to stay at. The staff (mostly young girls) are a pleasant lot, the food is ok, but the atmosphere and its location is what sets it apart from other guesthouses. The rooms, all set in charming courtyards, have seen an overhaul and feature modern showers and good beds. The owners are very knowledgable about the sights in Pingyao and around and will take care of taxis, tickets and the like. Great place!

The hotel is in a charming traditional wooden chinese house and the rooms have indipendent entrance in the internal court. The room was very big with a huge bed, maybe the bathoroom was not perfect and there were not many toilet gadgets as in most of the hotels in China, but we felt very confortable. The staff was very friendly and helpfull and speaks good English. The breakfast is not included, it is possible to choose between chinese or English breakfst (not very cheap). One night we had dinner in the restaurant (we choose fixed menu) and the food was very good and varied. The location is perfect in the centre of the old town of Pingyao.

We stayed here in the family room and it was great. Huge room with huge Kang bed, plus a separate single bed for my son. (My daughter and I shared the Kang bed and were glad to not be squished together in a standard double as in most Chinese hotels!) Clean, good water pressure. (be aware that hot water is not available 24/7! Ask about the schedule!) Gorgeous building. Free reliable wi-fi. English spoken by the staff was more than adequate for our needs--however, we didn't ask for much. A wonderful benefit was they let us use the room until late evening when we left on the night train for Xi'an for no extra charge.

Rainbow was very responsive by email to make arrangements for our arrival. Someone met us at the station when we got off the night train from Beijing. This was a great benefit as it was our first stop in China after Beijing and the station was a bit overwhelming at that point.

Did not eat here except for the carmelized bananas--wow!

Used the Harmony House driver to go to Wang Family Courtyard and Zhangbi. Worth doing--although be aware that it is not so much a tour as just hiring a driver.

We received a very grumpy and unfriendly welcome when we checked in at Tian Yuan Kui Hostel, a perfect example of how not to great guests. The standard double room was rather small but after requesting something with a bigger bathroom, we were upgraded which was nice. Even though the room smelled of smoke we were happy.
Unfortunately the travel information from the staff was quite useless and the price for private cars way too high (30% more than we paid eventually). The breakfast (which was not included in the room price) is way overpriced, there's cheaper options in Pingyao (10 RMB for two slices of toast, really?). The most ridiculous thing though is the beer price in their bar, 22 RMB for a bottle of local beer is outrageously expensive, the same bottle costs 8 RMB across the road and even in the Sakura Café aimed at Western tourists we only payed 15RMB for a bottle.
While we were happy with the room and the hotel in itself, the staff lacks proper education and management, superficially friendly but the smile dies away as soon as they turn around. It's a shame they don't take hospitality more serious, it could be a great place to stay at.
