We spent about 3 hours at this site and could have easily spent a day or more. It is one of the few remaining walled Chinese cities with strict preservation codes restricting building modern structures within the walls. Due to the short time, we only saw glimpses - a brief ride around the inner city, a tour of part of the wall, and walking down a few streets. Would have loved to browse through some stores/shops/ restaurants. City is famous for its vinegars and noodles (70 varieties). Some interesting open air restaurants that I would have love to sample if we had the time. We were told that it was also famous for their women's scarves. Would also have like to tour one of the museums.

This town is like stepping into the past. Albeit a somewhat commercialised version of the past. Go for several days to make sure you get your tickets (150 yuan for 3 days to 20+ museums and the wall) worth. If you are here for 1 day you can easily get by without paying the ticket.

We stayed in Pingyau as part of our China Tour.
What a charming place. It is easy to walk around and view all of the wonderful sights of this ancient town. The vinegar shops are fragrant and good value. The cotton's scarves are also great value and very usable

See the first banks of China and other ancient sites: Interesting but crowded especially on Saturday!
