This town is like stepping into the past. Albeit a somewhat commercialised version of the past. Go for several days to make sure you get your tickets (150 yuan for 3 days to 20+ museums and the wall) worth. If you are here for 1 day you can easily get by without paying the ticket.

We stayed in Pingyau as part of our China Tour.
What a charming place. It is easy to walk around and view all of the wonderful sights of this ancient town. The vinegar shops are fragrant and good value. The cotton's scarves are also great value and very usable

Pingyao is one of the four best preserved ancient villages in China. Most of the buildings are some hundreds of years old. The shopping streets are adorned with lanterns and other features that reinforce the air of ancient China. Shops offer a range of wares that appeal to tourists and lacquer ware stands out in this regard and some outstanding work is evident. Electric carts are available at 10RMB a trip to transport people around the town and to take travellers from parking areas outside the walls to their hotels. Historical sites and temples offer other attractions to visitors. Pingyao is a charming venue and is recommended.

This old town is interesting. There is a lot of redevelopment with houses being turned into boutique hotels. It is reasonably well done . However, the whole town now is a tourist attraction and nothing else. Thousands and more visit every day. Can be repetitive but mostly charming.
