See the first banks of China and other ancient sites: Interesting but crowded especially on Saturday!

Pingyao is one of the four best preserved ancient villages in China. Most of the buildings are some hundreds of years old. The shopping streets are adorned with lanterns and other features that reinforce the air of ancient China. Shops offer a range of wares that appeal to tourists and lacquer ware stands out in this regard and some outstanding work is evident. Electric carts are available at 10RMB a trip to transport people around the town and to take travellers from parking areas outside the walls to their hotels. Historical sites and temples offer other attractions to visitors. Pingyao is a charming venue and is recommended.

This old town is interesting. There is a lot of redevelopment with houses being turned into boutique hotels. It is reasonably well done . However, the whole town now is a tourist attraction and nothing else. Thousands and more visit every day. Can be repetitive but mostly charming.

Enjoyed our visit to Pingyao. The streets are so interesting, with plenty of shops and food stalls, in between all the historic buildings, temples and banks. A walk along a short section of the wall is also a must. Your entrance ticket should cover about 22 historical sites.

Pingyao is a must! UNESCO world heritage site means it’s retained its charm and character. Quiet and calm after Beijing it’s an oasis for a weary traveller
