I liked very much this hotel because it is a typical chinese building, with nice rooms. I have to tell you that we were among friends and none of our three rooms had air condicioner working. I did not complain with the front desk because I did not miss much the use of it. So I do not know if they could fix it. The breackfast is not good for us occidentals. But the location of the hotel and the rooms are the best of it.

Our room is quite comfortable. There are two bathrooms and a living area. The bed is firm and comfortable. The very dim lights in the black-tiled bathrooms make it hard to see. Of our five day stay at the Grand Kylin, coffee was available on one day. There was no bar/lounge. In fact, the dining area was the only auxiliary space with service in this rather large building. There was one staff person who spoke English and she was very helpful. Our room looked down over the large, cement floored dining area. In the mornings we awoke to "Hotel California" and other odd hits playing for the diners. The irony is this hotel was so empty the song quite fit. Often it was my husband and I and four or five staff people watching us eat. Very awkward. The breakfast was not considerate of international travelers. Some days there was a cold fried egg on a plate and a large host of Asian breakfast items. Only one day was there even coffee. Coffee seems like a simple enough item to serve that is a staple of many countries. All-in-all, I would try a different location in the ancient part of Pingyao. There are many from which to choose which actually have services in addition to a strange breakfast.

Had a short but very pleasant stay here. Service was very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was nicely done, with a number of choices, including cooked-to-order noodles (and eggs). Our room was very comfortable and well appointed. Public spaces are very elegant. Location was an easy walk from the south gate entrance of the city wall, and not too far from the Tian Yuan Kui Guesthouse, where we had a nice local dinner for a good price. Our guide in Xi'an, Allen, had kindly contacted the hotel to check (in Chinese) on transport to the Taiyuan airport; they can arrange a car (450 cny when we were there) for the 90 min. ride and add it to your hotel bill. If you're a truly intrepid traveler and arrive by overnight train from Xi'an at 0600, note that after hiking down the platform, hauling your bags down 3 flights of stairs and back up 3 flights, as you exit, you'll be besieged by a number of guys offering to take you to your hotel. You might want to look for a legitimate taxi in front of the train station (or wait for one), though he'll likely say the meter is no good for the old city and want to negotiate a fare (we did). As you drive up the dark, narrow & deserted streets of the old town at 0630, you'll be happy you're in a legitimate taxi -- and happy that you're at the Kylin Grand. The front desk staff graciously let us check in early, and the bed felt awfully good after a night on the soft sleeper bunks on the train. And the extra breakfasts we bought that morning tasted awfully good--at a reasonable price. Also, if you're over 60, you can get into any of the 19 attractions (temples & wall) by showing your passport to the turnstile operators for free admission (no ticket needed). It took us an hour to learn this (and a lot of walking), after first trying several times to buy the 75 cny discount ticket at various places--but then a kind lady pointed out the fine print on the ticket price sign (discount for some; free for others). Duh...

The design of the hotel is excellent and the staff are extremely helpful and friendly especially Sara the Sales & Marketing Manager who speaks English fluently. The building was formerly a very prestigious school and the architect who redesigned it as a hotel won a National Chinese Design award for it.

We stayed for 2 nights and on the first night Sara invited us to a Chinese barbecue on the patio area at the front of the hotel. She explained all the various dishes to us and the food was excellent. The second night we ate at a local restaurant which was also very good.

Our room was modern, clean and spacious with all the facilities you would expect of a good hotel. All the staff were friendly and although there English was limited it was never a problem to make ourselves understood (we are in China after all).

Pingyao itself is charming and has loads of interesting courtyard museums to visit. It is particularly pretty at night when all the Chinese lanterns are lit up.

We needed to arrange transport to Taiyuan airport for our flight to Xi'an and asked Sara to arrange it for us. She offered several options and we chose to use the hotel car service. On the morning of our departure I received a phone call telling me our flight had been delayed. Sara was on hand and not only rearranged the hotel car for us but also said we could keep our room on free of charge.

Overall a wonderful time and I would highly recommend The Kylin Grand Hotel.

Very nice and clean rooms. We got an unexpected upgrade to a beautiful suite. Sara at the reception in very helpful; she is very nice and speaks English.

Bad wi fi in the rooms; breakfast should have more western options.

Excellent location. Everything is within a walking distance.
Spend no more than two days.

We stayed in the very modern & beautiful Kylin Grand Hotel in Pingyao in an Executive Suite with was really luxurious with two toilets. We found the front desk staff to have no English skills. We had to use our excellent English speaking guide (Peyton -Hou Peng - peyton163@gmail.com) several times to help us to resolve minor problems. The Hotel has lots of potential to cater for Western Tourists like us by providing one or two English speaking staff on the front desk & a dining room menu in English. We ate down the street in a café, & most café’s had an English menu. One big negative for us was that the Safe was not fixed in the cupboard & could easily be taken away. The breakfast selections were mainly Chinese but eggs and bacon were made to order. The Hotel offers an airport transfer service in their Mercedes Benz business van which can also be hired for a day trip.
This good Hotel could be really great as its founder & owner, Chairman, Liu Cang Lin has a wonderful philosophy on her Hotel which is described in her 184 page coffee table book in the room “there is a spirit at work”. We read the whole book & found it very interesting & felt very sad for her that the local management do not seem to be putting her ideals into practice.

We are a family of four who just came back from our vacation in Pingyao and we stayed there for one night. We booked through a Chinese travel website which is called the Ctrip. We booked two queen size bed rooms and it costs us 880Rmb per night. The nice things about this hotel is the location and the service. It provides a great service for guests and it is so convenient since you can actually have a car to drive through the city and then parked in front of the hotel. However, here are couple of things I didn't like it about this trip: 1. The hotel restaurant: the cost comes with a free breakfast and we actually spent our first dinner there in the hotel too. It was horrible. The staff there were trying to be nice but really, I am surprised that's the service which a hotel like this provided to their guests. They served the food till its get cold, and it just always take them forever to get things for you; 2. The cost: we thought Ctrip was providing us the cheapest price but it was clearly not since what I learnt if you book the hotel with the hotel directly, you can probably gets for cheaper. Again, it is a wonderful hotel so I won't complain too much.

Room Tip: You will get a very interesting souvenir from the hotel when you checked in ;)
