Pleasant, traditional courtyard hotel within the city walls. Centrally-located on City God Temple Street (main side-road), within easy walking distance of all Old Town attractions and gates. Management will arrange pick-up and drop-off at the train station by electric cart, but confirm your likely arrival time, as they didn't check their emails and we paid for our own "taxi" from the station (20 yuan, 10 mins). Upon arrival, at 6:45 AM, they let us into our room, and allowed a late check-out (2pm, usual is 12pm) and luggage storage upon departure (late train). Limited, but serviceable English spoken by the friendly staff, who will work to meet your requests, even if it sometimes takes a while for communication to happen. Family room was clean and spacious, with three beds: a traditional, canopied double, and two "old-style" twins. Beds were Chinese-standard hard, but comfortable. Apparently, "old-style" just means faux brick bases, but no real other differences. Free wifi available in the room, and standard state TV with an English-language news channel. Bathroom was open style, but schedule your use, as the hotel loses water during the day (11 AM - 4 PM) - including the toilets (we had a water bucket brought in for emergencies). The courtyard is pleasant, but the highlight of this budget mid-range is the food: the included western breakfasts were forgettable, but the local food was the best we had in the city: we scheduled to eat there twice! Vegetarian options available for those that need them. All-in-all, a decent budget place for a short stay, but definitely not luxurious. Paid CNY 260 for 1 night in a family room on Booking.com.

Booked a family room for my family for 4 and also free pick up at the train station. This hotel was run by family members and all the staff are very polite and helpful. They really make our stay (even though for a day only) a memorable one. They helped to arrange a car for our day trip to Wang Family Courtyard, Zhangbi Underground Castle and Shuanglin Temple which we just took a look outside because my kids are too tired after visiting the two earlier sites. The hotel is situated a few doors from the Chenghuangmiao temple. From the right side of the hotel, we can easily reached the MingQing Street aka Pedestrian Walking Street with lots of eateries and souvenirs shops. Nice big red dates are selling everywhere with reasonable price than the one I bought at Zhuhai, few months back!

The room was nice and clean, furnished in the olden days concept. They also had nice courtyard. The owner also offered to take us to the train station for our overnight train to Xi'an. Will definitely come back here again when we are in Pingyao next timr.

I stayed 2 nights in a RMB150 per night room, with a king size bed and private bathroom, which would usually be occupied by two people. Since I was traveling alone, the room was big enough for me. But the space would seem a bit tight for two.

The bathroom is the basic Chinese type -- the shower area has no curtain or separate area. It's a shower + toilet combo.

Between November and March when it's winter, you may find the heating slightly weak.

There are numerous little inns in the Pingyao ancient city that are very similar in architectural style, service and room set up. Before I went to Pingyao, I saw that some travel books recommend that travelers (esp during low season) go up to different hotels and bargain for a good discount before they settle for one. I didn't do that.

One note -- many inns in Pingyao, such as this one, offers rooms that have brick beds ('keng' in Chinese) that has a heating system beneath it. If you are curious about how Chinese people from 300-600 years ago slept, you might try one of those rooms. However, obviously the beds made from bricks are a bit harder, even with a layer of cushioning on top. If in doubt, you can always book a room with a normal bed first, and then when you arrive, ask to see a room with a 'keng' just to judge whether you want to give it a try.

Booked 3 nights at this guesthouse and whilst the owner and (some) of her staff score top marks for being welcoming and helpful, the guesthouse itself is in need of some TLC. We stayed in a double room with private bathroom on the top level above the restaurant and overlooking the road. The room was very basic and not very clean along with the tiny bathroom attached. Water pressure was terrible (but this seems to be throughout Pingyao) and the water came in waves i.e. either very cold or piping hot – there was no middle ground. Being a courtyard guesthouse, it did tended to be very noisy and our room position overlooking the road didn’t help matters (but that was our fault!). The walls are extremely thin so much so that you can hear the people next door snoring which makes for very patchy sleep. We ate some of the best food in China at their restaurant and their evening BBQ is excellent. Even after moving to another guesthouse we still came back for a few dinners. If you really do want to / need to stay here than ask for the rooms right at the back in the second courtyard and test the thinness of the walls. We ended up leaving well fed but extremely tired!

Room Tip: First test the thinness of the walls & ask for a room in their second courtyard right at the bac...

Stayed 2 nights in November 2010, so it was off season. Only one hotel worker spoke English, which is ok, as I had made reservation through elong, so they were ready for me. Arrived at 6 am after overnight train from Beijing, and they let me leave luggage and check in at 10 am. They were helpful to a point, but did not seem to offer any extra services (tour booking, train tickets, etc. - don't really know though as I did not ask). Best aspect was the food - very good, with a varied menu in English. Worst aspect was noise at night - they had a tour group one night, and since my room was over a courtyard with a pool table, it got a bit noisy, but quieted down around 9 pm. Four separate individuals did mistakenly come to my room looking for theirs, I expect, but I cannot hold the holle responsible for inebriated tourists - bothersome, though. Also, did not clean room while I was there, just emptied trash (no big deal to me). Wireless connection in room (slow). Relatively inexpensive (CNY 126 - maybe 20 dollars) for very small room, but typical for this price range.
