We got upgraded from Japanese tatami room to king room which is beautiful, comfortable and very spacious. The front office and restaurant staff are trying their best to help even though with limited english skill. The courtyard is kept traditional and beautiful. It is located on South street, the main street.

Breakfast is included with choice of Chinese or western food with tea or coffee. Better choose western food. We had Chinese style on first breakfast, buns need more fillings and were not hot anymore so the buns were tough. There is mung bean soup but very watery and tasteless. There was also some rice cake dipped in vinegar and some veggies. We barely ate anything but fruits.

The next morning we had western style. Food were slighty warm but definitely better than Chinese version. We ate all food and very happy. It is up to hotel standard.

The hotel also provides free pick up from and to train station. The drivers cannot speak English but they are very punctual. The only thing is the driver back to train station was speeding and reckless.

Definitely a recommended hotel.

Great location at the South Gate of the ancient town! We booked a Japanese-style room, which was cozy, small and clean. Despite the limited English knowledge, the staff of the hotel was incredibly helpful and friendly. The free driver pick-up and drop-down to the station worked flawlessly.
For breakfast, don't bother trying the "western-style" one, and directly go for the Chinese-style one. You won't be disappointed.

We stayed three nights in a modern, stylish room at this lovely small hotel, which is housed in a beautifully restored traditional building in South Street. Step outside onto the stone paved street, and you're within walking distance of all the sights, including the wall, and the vibrant shopping and eating options. Like many of the rooms in the hotel, our room looked out to an attractive central, covered courtyard where breakfast - a standard, simple meal - was served.

The desk staff were enthusiastic and helpful: they organised a driver to take us to the Wang family compound, some 35 km away (don't miss it). My only concern was two small canaries singing sweetly in a tiny cage in the courtyard, unable to fly. To many Western eyes, this is upsetting: a permanent large cage would fit very well into the lovely courtyard. Overall though, it's a real treat staying in an atmospheric building, and it added to our holiday experience.

Room Tip: Request a room with direct access to the covered courtyard

Looking for a modern room in ancient Pingyao conveniently on the shopping street but near the exterior wall - then you have found it. Pickup from airport arranged by hotel. Manager helped with local trips and transportation. Excellent western or chinese breakfast included. Restaurant under construction, but not bothersome to the visit; completion date uncertain. Rooms are small but adequately sized, wonderful shower, the toilet somewhat inconveniently partially visible if the courtyard entrance is not screened off. If looking for more authentic old town accomodations other hotels may suit you better. Staff handled English par for the month's experiences.

The Water hotel is a lovely small hotel near the south gate of Pingyao. We stayed in a king bed deluxe room which was perfect for our needs. Pingyao is a wonderful place - yes it's touristy, but it also has a slightly rough, dusty edge to it making it feel much more authentic than other Chinese "ancient towns" which have been over-renovated.

The hotel is beautiful, but the thing that charmed us most was the staff. My wife had caught a cold in Beijing and when we were picked up at the station by the hotel's driver (transfers are included in the room rate), she was coughing quite a bit. Because the driver didn't speak any English he didn't say anything, but as soon as we arrived, the lady at the front desk asked if she was OK (the driver had obviously told her about the coughing) and immediately gave her some herbal tea to help. She later came to our our room to see if my wife had a fever, and asked if we wanted a doctor. Throughout our stay the staff were wonderful and so obliging - for example they gave us extra drinking water and fresh fruit, after we explained what a "double shot" cappuccino was, they made them for us each day!

The only other thing I'd say is that the attached restaurant doesn't really cater to western tastes, and there are several other restaurants in Pingyao serving delicious food.
