“Absolutely beautiful place......”
Reviewed November 22, 2010

A really beautiful place, the wild forest area has been maintained and there are quaint pathways through them to the beach, main hotel pool area etc. Perfect if you want to chill and enjoy the silence of the place with just the sound of the waves...... they have built a wonderful pathway along the shore to the beach area..... great food, great price for a place like this. Friendly staff, very helpful.

The main building of the hotel is an uber cool 60's minimalist building which is unfortunately being compromised by the current owners. There is a large new development being built on the site which is not in keeping at all with the original building. There are developments to the main building which are not sympathetic either.

You'll need to upgrade to a deluxe room if you want the amazing sea views as the trees block everything lower down. The rooms are plush but not large, the air conditioning is not great and hot water availability in the morning isn't great either.

There's a wide spread for breakfast from sushi to omlettes and service is excellent. The same cannot be said for the coffee!

There is a huge amount of building going on all over the site. It would have been less disturbing if they had completed some aspects of the project before starting others.

The private beach is a case in point, a narrow strip of sand between a building site and the sea. It is also soulless, we spent all our time in town.

For the prices it charges this hotel is poor value for money. They'd be better off spending their money on ensuring the original building was up to scratch and little items like the towels and coffee were right.

Had a lovely stay at the Independence hotel. Had to book 2 rooms to accommodate family which was a bit pricey. Baby cot was provided with no mattress so ended up turning coach around in room and making makeshift cot. Pool was green and in desperate need of cleaning upon arrival so we asked when it was last done and the next morning it was cleaned. We ordered room service one night it rained as we didnt want to venture out with the kids and it arrived to us cold. There excuse was because it was raining. Construction is occurring throughout the hotel with power tools and hammering continuing into the night (9:30pm) , repeated phone calls were required to have this stopped.
Putting all that aside it was a great place to stay with children, very safe and it was the beach that won us over. This hotel will be a lovely place to stay say in 5 years time once all construction is finished, provided they take care of the pool more regularly and up there service a bit more.

Just a short note to say a special thanks with regard to our stay at your hotel on 11 September 2010. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Preah Sihanouk Province and found your hotel comfortable, relaxing and accommodating. We were particularly impressed by the friendliness and helpfulness of all your staff. Our room was extremely comfortable with fantastic views of the sea. Please pass on our thanks to Mr. Kyden-Sales & Marketing Manager, Mr. David, Assistant Manager- E Commerce & Reservations, Ms. Mary-GRO. The food, hotel facilities and services were excellent. We would not hesitate to recommend your establishment to our friends and family should they be visiting Preah Sihanouk Province and we hope we have the opportunity to enjoy your hospitality in the future. Wishing you all the best for the future.

With warm regards,

Chan Sopheak, family and friends (Room 607)

I first want to say that I have traveled alot in the past and stayed at many hotels. This was very enjoyable stay and very clean hotel. I felt that any time that I needed anything; it was taken care of within minutes. That is huge for me since I have been told I am high maintenance. The views were amazing. The staff was very friendly. When I came into the hotel it was very nice to hear "hello Mr. Michael" and how was your day today?" It shows that you are not just another person but you are a friend. I thought for the value this was a steal for the consumer.

The Independence Hotel is a recently renovated hotel which still maintains the style and charm from its opening in the 60's. The grounds are beautiful. It's somewhat remote location, though slightly inconvenient to those without transportation, provide a more tranquil setting than those hotels closer to town. The staff was very pleasant and professional. For a hotel of that quality, the meals were very reasonably priced. It is disappointing that free internet is not offered. But I have found that most, if not all, 4-5 star hotels in Cambodia charge a very high fee for internet usage while many 2-3 star hotels provide free wifi.

The only possible concern I have is that, just after I stayed at the Independence, I was a victim of credit card fraud. Of course, I cannot directly link this to my stay there. But I had not used my credit card recently prior to staying at the hotel. The only other time I've had my credit card number stolen was after staying at the Sokha Beach Resort - also located in Sihanoukville. I would definitely stay at the Independence again - but the next time I will use cash.

What person goes to a high-end hotel and tries to steal a book? The hotel manager suspected I would! How DISRESPECTFUL! Don't expect to get internet service here. Go to any guest house and they've got it for free.
