What person goes to a high-end hotel and tries to steal a book? The hotel manager suspected I would! How DISRESPECTFUL! Don't expect to get internet service here. Go to any guest house and they've got it for free.

Independence Hotel is THE only true beach resort in the small coastal Cambodian city of Sihanoukville. The private beach allows for generally unaccompanied walks and swims, coupled with available massage on the spot.

Unlike the surrounding city and hotels, Independence is isolated from the party scene downtown. It's a true vacationer's paradise for those looking for peace and quiet amidst luxurious accommodations and a massive breathtaking campus of exotic plant and wildlife.

Each morning I enjoyed greeting the friendly groundskeepers on my way to the breakfast buffet. Once there, Mary and her waitress counterparts, kept my coffee cup filled and provided very pleasant and relaxing service - even though I was usually working while eating.

On that note, Independence comes through with WIFI throughout the building - which was about as reliable as you can ask for in Cambodia. Skype, streaming music and such were no issue, even down at the beach restaurant. Why not work where you play?

Phillip Toh personally extended himself and his wonderful staff to ensure I was completely taken care of my entire stay.

Heading downtown for the nightlife was my only real challenge. The bus could stand to make more regular times and meeting areas around Sihanoukville.

All in all, the Independence Hotel was an awesome stay and a very nice way to begin my journey through Cambodia. The country's turbulent and fascinating history left its mark at the Independence far before and after Jakie O's 1965 visit. Just ask anyone and they'll tell you the incredible stories.

Independence hotel is a marvelous hotel with courteous staff, great rooms with breath-taking rooms witha view. The food there is very tasty and a good way to wind up your stay is partaking in their relaxing massages. For photo lovers, they have a private beach to catch that early morning sunrise. Their breakfast buffet offers a large variety of hot and cold foods. They have a pool, gym, safe, wireless and even a small boutique. Overall for price, security, atmosphere, and excellent customer service minutes from the beach, Independence is the place to be!

This hotel lived up to the pictures on this site as well as other sites. It was a groovy cross between French Khmer and Vegas. The rooms were immense, well outfitted, spotlessly clean and very comfortable. The beds, nsm, not like home, not as bad as a resort in Mexico, either. It is far from town ($5 for a tuk-tuk which is expensive in Cambodia) and the bars and other beaches so if "remote" and "quiet" doesn't suit then you might want to stay some place else. We were at the hotel in early June and felt as if we had the place to ourselves although they were turning people away as they didn't have rooms so there was plenty of room to roam and things to do. The restaurants were attractive, impeccably clean and the service was friendly and expert. The food wasn't the best food I've ever had in my life at a hotel but I would rate it "Very Good" with enough choices between Thai, Khmer, or Western choices to last a week of eating only at the hotel.

The beach is private and the staff had a lovely way of dealing with people just wandering off the road to the beach: inviting them to have lunch at the restaurant and then enjoying the beach. Because the beach is private it's very well-maintained and spotlessly clean. The other beaches in Sihanoukville were littered and dodgy. The Gulf of Thailand was incredibly beautiful and the beach is set in a lagoon so there was not huge crashing waves which made for peaceful days of lounging under the palm umbrella, bathing in the warm water and having an Angkor beer or three.

This is easily the best beach in Cambodia - very scenic- and private. The Independence has a great pool, and an excellent breakfast buffet. The staff is second to none - anticipated our every need. The lunch and dinner menu runs from $3 to $8 meals that are excellent. The hotel looks new and rooms are spacious. There is a troop of monkeys living in the jungle around the hotel. You can buy fruit to hand feed them from women outside the hotel. Free shuttle to the public beach or in town. We enjoyed it so much we decided to cancel another booking to go back next month.

We stayed for two nights in June '10 and paid $110 per night.
The hotel is beautifully appointed and nicely furnished, with a great balcony overlooking hotel gardens and the rocky coastline. On the whole the staff were friendly and professional.
Arriving from the bus from Phenom Penh we bargained our tuk-tuk driver down from $8 to $7, only to be told at reception we should have paid $4-$5. We weren't too worried as we knew the hotel offered a free shuttle to town, so we would no longer have to rely on the ripoff tuktuk drivers.
The problem with the place is that it's a long way out of town, and the driver of the hotel free shuttle has an attitude. They advertise that the shuttle runs several times per day at set hours. The first time we used the service the driver was visibly annoyed. The hotel seemed deserted so presumably we were causing him unnecessary work. We arrived on time for the shuttle but were asked to wait 15 minutes as some staff members decided to come along for the ride. On the return from town we waited a good 25 minutes in the dark (around 11.30pm) beyond the pickup time and called the hotel twice... (not sure what would have happened if I hadn't called).
The second ride was when we were checking out, the only difference was that this time he turned the motor off after we entered the van, while we waited for the staff, necessitating us to exit the van again and walk back into the relative cool of the lobby (the lobby is not air conditioned). As soon as the first staff member entered the van the aircon was turned back on. We were outraged by this treatment and complained to the finance controller sitting in the front seat. He seemed genuinely concerned and gave us his card.

The first night we had dinner in the restaurant down by the rocky beach. Although very quiet, the food and service was good and prices very reasonable for a five star hotel.

I guess that because the place was empty the music, exotic water fountains and fans in the lobby were only turned on (sometimes) after we walked in. On checking in we were walked down an open poorly lit road to "the new building". The room was really nice, and if arriving by car we could have parked close by in the undercover parking provided near the rooms. But the 5 minute walk back up the hill in the heat of day was no joke. No umbrellas were available in case of rain.
The shower in the room was beautiful... a big open stone area with planter boxes on either side . Unfortunately the drain was blocked and my 10 minute shower flooded the whole bathroom and water was starting to flood into the bedroom. We called reception about the problem, and a staff member was immediately dispatched to mop it up, but the problem of the blocked drains was not addressed (the bathroom floor drain was also blocked). It's hard to imagine that this was the first time this problem was reported. To be fair there was also an overhead shower in the bath that we used to shower from then on.

The worst was when we were checking out, a concierge was promptly sent to collect our bags. We followed behind some 5 minutes later, only to find our bags sitting on a trolley abandoned outside near the open road. We were horrified and wheeled the trolley ourselves into the lobby. I'm not sure but I think the man responsible could have been the same one driving the van. As I said, most staff seemed professional and friendly, although no apology was offered for abandoning our valuable luggage (my laptop included).

In summary, it is a beautiful hotel, recently rebuilt, in a remote location with one staff member who spoiled it for us. There are no facilities or other restaurants in the area, so either you will be held captive by the hotel and pay their prices, or you will have the hassle one way or another of finding your way into town and back. We moved to the beach near town after two days and didn't look back.
One more thing I just remembered... I was a bit disgusted when I was told that wifi would cost me $10 per hour or $20 for 4 hours, especially when most cafes restaurants, bars and cheap hotels in town all offer wifi for free. Even the specialty high speed wifi centres in town (usually air conditioned) only charge 75 cents to $1 per hour. Considering the remote location of the hotel the management should be bending over backwards to minimize this inconvenience rather than seeking to profit from it.

We stayed at the Independence Hotel this year for our company's annual management retreat. The hotel offered top notch food, service and accommodations for our group of 60+ staff, including excellent meeting facilities, good broadband access, a lovely pool, and the best beach in Cambodia. While May is off-season and it's a bit warm in Sihanoukville this time of year, the air conditioned facilities made it quite comfortable for a business meeting. We'd definitely come back.
