Stayed in Double Suite family room and although a little more expensive than normal Cambodia prices is worth a small amount more if you want to have a few days of just relaxing, taking it easy and just going with the flow.

After a week between Siam Reap and Phnom Phen, we wanted a few days to chill and this was great, nice and quiet however just 10-15 minutes to the Golden Lion and the pubs, restaurants etc. Courtesy shuttle also handy

Hotel doesn't have a shop so make sure to stock up on munchies it you want them.

Private beach is nice and a long jetty which can be jumped off however just check for rips / currents as on day two the current was strong and although not dangerous, it could freak out some less experienced swimmers.

Only downside if any is location from Town so if you want to organise anything for following morning you need to be a little more proactive however we were not so fussed with this so was great and we always managed to do something on each day.

We stayed there just 1 night for our birthday because we can not afford more due to our budget but we really enjoyed this place. The views from the suite are amazing. The breakfast is one of the best we never had too with everything you want (eggs, asian dishes, cheese, juices ...) anyway it was short but great

I do not know what people are complaining about here. This place is a little pricier but completely worth it. We had a great room with a fabulous view, the food was top notch and the staff were amazing. The private beach is clean and quiet with calm water for swimming. Well worth the extra few dollars!

I can see why people love it, and why others hate it.

First, the good. The pool is great, the private beach is beautiful and clean. The hotel has masses of space, set in a nature reserve. We stayed in a premier villa, which had huge floor to ceiling windows with stunning sea views. There was a good restaurant on the beach, which takes advantage of their great location. It had been refurbished a while ago, and while some elements could do with a touch up others were great, like the rain shower. It is set away from the middle of town, though only a short tuk tuk ride away gives you the best of both worlds.

Then the bad.

The pool and beach have nowhere near enough sun loungers. We were lucky to go when it was very quiet, but if the hotel was half full you would not have a hope on either the beach or by the pool.

The rooms were a haven for mosquitos. There are ledges hidden all round the rooms where they live and with no mosquito nets will bite you all night. Totally unacceptable in a top end hotel in an area with malaria.

The service was the worst we found anywhere in Cambodia. Not that it was particularly terrible, just very disinterested with a pretty poor standard of English. For example, when checking out there wasn't even a "Did you enjoy your stay?". I was just handed a bill.

If you want to go to somewhere quiet, to enjoy a nice pool, nice beach, great views, you would enjoy it (provided you don't mind getting bitten by the mosquitos). My question would be why go to Sihanoukville for that?

We changed rooms four times due to mildew in the rooms. We got food poisoning in restaurant, all four: children and adults… Under no circumstances would I return to this hotel.

They did run this hotel with hundreds of rooms, with no kitchen and served mostly prefab food, terrible!

The hotel lives on in some kind of glamour from the 60s and it had certainly its charm, ones.

Have stayed at Independence a few times. The rooms in the main building have been refurbished and are quite modern with all the luxuries you expect from a very solid 4 star hotel. The deatached villas / apartments closer to the sea are even more spacious, but unless you're getting one with a direct view of the sea, not worth the extra bucks.

The breakfast has improved significantly over the past year and is served in a beautiful circular room with nice 360 degree views.

The staff are lovely and helpful, even if some of them are very young and could do with a bit of advanced training. The waiters at the beachside restaurant are pushy and have caused us to stay away.

The beach is beautiful; free beds and towels are provided and you can get cold drinks from the bar located near by.

Lastly, the hotel is located in a huge compound that has lots of trees and a beautiful wooden walkway built over the rocks on one part of the beachfront.

All in all, very very good stay and excellent value for money. Probably the best place to stay in Sihanoukville for the money.

The hotel is located on a beautiful private beach a little way from town- lots of beach to walk and swim. And don't worry about getting to and from town as they have regular free shuttles. Perhaps the best of both worlds?

The hotel room was beautiful with very large windows overlooking the ocean. The hotel is slightly setback from the beach which enhances the view from the hotel and from the beach. Fantastic view! Great swim on the beach, so good we didn't even try the pool.

The breakfast is perhaps the best of this trip with a wide range of excellent fresh fruit in addition to an egg station, noodle station and a good selection of breads (and croissants) and cereals. Even real cheese. Unfortunately the baguette seemed a little dated.

We also went for a walk along the beach in both directions, eventually finding a 1km road that brought us to the front gate. From there it was an easy walk back to the hotel. The walk provided us with lots of crabs, lizards, birds and even monkeys. Be careful of the three legged monkey- don't turn your back to him as you pass him as he may approach you from behind.

Overall an excellent stay. The grounds could be a little more maintained, but everything in the room was excellent. Next time, we will return.
