“Luxury at the Sokha Beach Resort”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 5, 2010

We stayed here with friends for three days in February 2010. Warmly welcomed on arrival and given cool drinks in an area of the spacious and very impressive lobby while the hotel's facilities were explained to us. Rooms were large and clean with views overlooking the pool and gardens to the white sand beach and Gulf of Siam beyond. Meals were of a very good standard with lots of fresh fruit available too. Without exception from reception to cleaners the staff were polite and courteous. Don't know if we'll ever get back but we left with great memories of our stay at this hotel.

First impressions were....WOW. It all looked really nice, but then it all started to fall apart. Check-in was long laborious and finally incorrect, and as the reception, lobby and quite a considerable amount of other areas, were not air-conditioned (open style with high fans) this was not a good nor comfortable start. Then the long walk (no air-conditioned halls as they are all open style "echo" chambers) to our well-overpriced room.

The room was OK, with a tiny private balcony, but for the money expended it was rude. The beds were small and hard, furnishings were at best, average, the room was not very big and the bathroom was poorly set-out and not very functional. The front door did not seal properly and the cracks were siliconed up in a rather cheap and nasty manner - not acceptable for the exorbitant tarrif. The telephone was barred from outgoing calls and it took sometime, frustration and effort to make it fully functional.

The bathroom was modern in appearance but wasn't very functional. The gap between the shower door and the glass partion failed to seal allowing the water to stream out onto the bathroom floor (quite a large amount of water escaped) and steam build up was substantial. The shower was cramped, as too the toilet area, and the sink was fairly small. Their was a seperate bath, and this could have been removed to create a bigger shower, toilet and sink areas.

Overall, the rooms seemed to be out dated and in need of some renovations, including a tarrif reduction. I am assuming the high prices are to offset the other hotel's amenities. The pool, garden and beach areas are immaculate and very stunning. The beach is private, manicured and has fancy shaded sun bed rooms and ample sun lounges and at a price, many aquatic activities. The pool has a bar, ample lounges and grassed areas, and does resemble a resort. However, we are from Australia where great beaches are in abundance as too pools, and a little bit fancy pool at this resort did not offset the price paid.

As for the food, the dinner menu looked wonderful, but as the only air-conditioned restaurant wasn't opened tonight (yet it was fully set), and we were going to have to endure the April heat and humidity only slightly alleviated by the overwhelmed ceiling fans wasnot my idea of comfortable dining. We opted for the room service. This was slow and of a poor quality. Drinks brought with dinner were warm and upon my demand for cold drinks, only coolish drinks were returned, sometime later. Terrible service and quality at a premium cost.

The "Suckhole" Beach Resort was so disappointing that we checked-out after the first night (scheduled for another two) and felt no regrets in leaving this sad excuse for a resort and ditto town. Back to Phnom Penh's InterContinental - half the price and twice the quality and three times the service.

Would never recommend this place to anyone, and if want a resort, then Thailand is the way to go if you're in South East Asia.

We stayed here as a family recently on the recommendations from others here and previpus friends and we were not disapoointed. What a great hotel! The awesome beach is a higlight but so was the exceptional service and lovely facilities.

Our room was superb for us and our baby, the buffet for breakfast was vast and lunch and dinner were a nice choice of by the pool, in the open air restuarant or on the beach. The staff at all times were faultless. The Cambodians are lovely people and it was so nice to see their sincerity and genuine caring nature.

I like to exercise so the gym was a real bonus as it is huge and the massage after with a spell in the jacuzzi and steam room was great as well! Overall, it was jsut so nice walking around the massive grounds and seeing the beautiful ocean. We would recommend this hotel to anyone and after a couple of stays previously elsewhere we would say, don't even consider another hotel if you are staying in Sihanoukville.

Sokha Hotel, thank you and in partcular Mr Lim for making our stay so enjoyable. We will be back soon...

Having read a number of previous reviews we went expecting a mixed bag - but overall were very impressed at most aspects of the hotel.
Check in was a bit fraught - we had booked a "sea view" room - only to be told they did not exist. However, eventually someone had the foresight to explain that the Coconut trees had grown a lot (and the view of the sea was between these!) so we were then happy.
Pool area vast with a nice bar in the middle - however for us the real benefit was the private beach. Just walk for 10 mins to the right (still in the hotel grounds, it is huge), along the beach, and you come to a peaceful spot, umbrellas there if you need them, no screaming kids, just the sound of the waves - perfect. We spent most of the day here! There are a couple of beach bars offering snacks - be prepared for a little wait for your food as they have to bring it from the hotel - but when it arrives the food is OK.

Happy hour by the bar a must - we spent a number of evenings, like everyone else, looking at pictures on our laptops of the UK covered in snow! Internet is a bit intermittent though.

Breakfast OK - good choice - room and facilities excellent. Take a tuc tuc from outside the gate to the local strip of restaurants - near the Golden Lion roundabout (trust me you can't miss this). Some are great - others not so good - but if you walk down the track to the beach from here and turn right there are a number of good beach bars - and the best one here is called "Above us only Sky". Quite apt!!

Oooow, i do get in trouble with my conscioness here. Usually i skip these kind of all-inclusive places but after three weeks of Laos and Cambodja it suddenly felt so good to be pampered for two days. We didn't leave the complex but with an excellent white beach on your doorstep, a huge pool (to my standards) and a fairly good restaurant who cares. OK, the prices are almost like home but then the convience is also nice. Lots of expats, real-estate hawks and governement officials around though. Guess this is as top end as Sihanoukville gets. Staff is superfriendly but when the officials arrive they tend to choose who's master and who's just a guest they probably never see again. Had my first Spa-experience here and the signature massage was great. Had a great stay.

Excellent staff service, nice rooms, beautiful private beach, although the pool was warm under the hot sun. Wireless internet was intermittent, but overall the stay was excellent. Unfortunately, no golf course within 200km.

Sihanoukville is a 3 hour car trip from Phnom Penh and the beach town is a clustered group of budget guest houses, happy hours and cheap dining options. The Sokha is not the same cultural experience as you would have in the rest of town but is rather a quiet place to relax away from the noise and bustle of it all if you've been in the city all week. A huge buffet is served each morning and you can spend your day in the large pool swimming up to the bar for smoothies, take a dip in the Gulf of Thailand, get a traditional Khmer massage for an excellent price, workout in the gym and enjoy a seafood dinner on the deck of the pool without ever leaving the complex. If you'd like to experience the local scene, there are tour bus shuttles available and the local food is quite good and a much better value than at the Sokha.
