“Great Beach Resort”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 29, 2013

Sokha resort is certainly a very large complex - it has its own beach area stretching 1.5km's. That gives you some idea of its size. The beach is supposed to be the best in Cambodia - not sure about that, but was very nice with plenty of room not to feel cluttered and you are not tripping over one another.
It essential when you book you ask for rooms that are Pool Side as the Lakeside Rooms are about 1/2 km away from main dining complex and are quite separate in their location.
The rooms are very nice, the pool area fantastic and the dining area opening out toward the pool.
A nice place to relax and chill out. Not sure about the township of Sihanoukville though - pretty basic, but has plenty of bars along a beach strip. Attractive to the younger travellers.
The resort even has its own Casino if you like a flutter.

Room Tip: Book Poolside Rooms

If we had known how wet the rainy season in Cambodia can get, we probably would have bypassed a few nights at the beach. Sokha beach resort was a lovely relaxing place to stay however. When the sun is shining I'm sure the private beach looks beautiful, as even when it's raining and cloudy, the beach still looked lovely. The hotel was very clean and the food reasonably good. Drinks were a bit pricey when you compare it to the beach bar prices, but that's to be expected in such a grand hotel/resort. The room was clean and fresh looking. Wifi was free throughout the hotel and in the rooms with good signal. The staff were very helpful and welcoming. It was nice staying a bit away from the main beaches as the accommodation around there did not look too good from the outside. On saying that, we did enjoy a good couple of nights eating and drinking around serendipity beach which was fun. If we were back in Cambodia in the drier months we'd definitely stay at sokha beach again.

Staff are very helpful, rooms are clean, beach is perfect as is the pool, but somehow something is just missing. I guess it would be perfect for families as there is lots of space for kids to move about freely. Maybe it is the sheer size of the place, but it feels too impersonal...too big for my liking.

Room Tip: Get a room with pool and ocean view. definately worth it.

Most of these reviews agree its not 5 star. They are all 100% accurate, and thats fine but I would argue its barely even 4 star standard. I would strongly recommend against staying here if you can find a higher rated resort at a great price.

I mean don't get me wrong, its right on the beach and only a few minutes from town, but there are tents that are in better locations. You pay for the experience and if this place is claiming 5 stars its just not true. Service is the worst we experienced in seven, 5 star hotels between Vietnam and Cambodia. Breakfast buffet by far the worst we had. Room easily the worst we had, air-con didn't work, no shampoo or conditioner, items missing off the mini bar, very old and dated. There are a 100 little things that don't make this a 5 star resort but I'm not going to list them all.

I'm not fussy or difficult and the majority of the time its very hard to disappoint me, but if you are paying for and expecting a 5 star resort and you don't get it you can't help but feel dismayed. This is definitely one of those times and I'd like others to be warned.

We recently spent a long weekend here. There was a lot to like about this place. First of all, we took advantage of a special deal that they were running on rates for Cambodian residents. Second is the location. The hotel sits on a truly beautiful stretch of beach. The waves are gentle, as is the slope so it's perfect for even the smallest kids.

We had some hiccups regarding the roll-a-way cot for my 4 year old that I'd requested when booking over the phone. Upon arrival we were told that they didn't have such a bed so, instead, housekeeping brought a full mattress and put it on the floor for us. I was a little miffed to see staff wheeling a fold-a-way cot down the hall the next day.

The breakfast buffet was more than acceptable but at 16USD/person (kids under 5 eat free) I found it a bit pricey. There is a kid's club but there was never an adult on duty when I took my kids there. That said, arranging babysitters through the hotel was easy and cost effective. We went with a large group of people. Five families, including my own, with young children (under 5) took advantage of the sitting service. The pool is brilliant for kids although the slide was closed when we were there. Not sure why.

Would we go there again? I'm not sure. This hotel is definitely the easiest option (especially for families with kids) but I don't know that I would want to pay full-rates for this place. You're really paying for the location.
